 Canticle XCV. St. Peter’s Psalm of Consolation
for the Brethren of the Cross, 1 Peter 1.

BLEST be our God forevermore,
Who, for our vile transgression
In mercy, mankind to restore,
Gave us regeneration
Through Christ His Son, / The Mercy-Throne,
Unto the hope eternal
Of Jesus Christ, / Who did arise
From death to life supernal.

2 Eternal heritage our King
Christ doth obtain and merit,
And blessedness unperishing
Doth grant us to inherit—
Kept for His own / In Heaven’s throne,
Until your glad receiving,
Who now embrace / His cov’nant grace,
In Christ your Lord believing.

3 God’s pow’r preserves you in the faith
Until that great salvation
Prepared for you, as Scripture saith,
From heav’n and earth’s creation,
To be revealed / In season sealed,
When ye shall know all gladness,
Though briefly now / In grief ye bow
And foes work woe and sadness.

4 If God desires that ye should live
In sorrow many a season
And in your tribulation grieve,
He doth so with good reason,
That ye from death / May live by faith,
A faith true and unerring,
Possessed on earth, / Of greatest worth,
God’s proofing fires enduring.

5 This all to God’s praise shall attain
When Christ is manifested,
Though Him with eyes ye have not seen,
Ye keep His Word well tested,
And Him have loved, / True faith have proved:
So shall ye joy most truly
In heaven aye, / When ends this day,
And God makes all things newly.

Gelobt sei Gott in Ewigkeit,
der uns als wir verloren,
nach seiner großn Barmherzigkeit,
hat wider neu geboren
durch seinen Sohn, der Gnaden Thron,
zur Hoffnung ewigs Lebens,
durch Jesum Christ, der wider ist
vom Tod erstanden eben.

2 Ein unvergänglich Herrlichkeit
mußt Christus uns erwerben,
ein unbefleckte Seligkeit
und unverwelklichs Erbe,
welchs er gar schon ins Himmels Thron
euch allen thut behalten,
die ihr jetzund am Gnadenbund
im Glauben thut fest halten.

3 Im Glauben zu der Seligkeit,
euch Gottes Macht bewahret,
welch euch von Anfang ist bereit,
daß sie Gott offenbaret
zur letzten Zeit, da ihr ohn Leid,
euch werdet ewig freuen,
die ihr jetzund ein kleine Stund
leidet der Feind bedreuen.

4 Wenn es denn Gott so haben will,
daß ihr müßt traurig leben,
in mancherlei Anfechtung viel,
so thuts Gott darum eben,
das eur Glaub währt auf dieser Erd
rechtschaffen gut erfunden,
köstlicher zwar, denn Gott fürwahr
probiert im Feur viel Stunden.

5 Zur Ehr Gotts soll solchs all geschehn,
wenn Christ wird offenbaret,
welchen ihr zwar nicht habt gesehn,
doch sein Wort wohl bewahret,
und ihn geliebt Glauben geübt,
drum werdt ihr euch auch freuen
nach dieser Zeit in Ewigkeit,
wenn Gott alls wird verneuen.
