Nun die Reise ist vollendet (Nun hab ich, Gott Lob, vollendet)

Here is my translation of the post-travel hymn, “Nun die Reise ist vollendet” (Johann Christoph Beer, d. 1712), in NEGB #244 with melody assignment “Werde munter, mein Gemüthe.” Bachmann gives its origin as Nürnberg 1676.  — The earliest instance I find is Nuremberg 1677 (Saubert) with ascription to Beer, an earlier 4-stanza form of our hymn with the title “Nun hab ich, Gott Lob, vollendet / meine vorgehabte Reis” and fitting the meter of the assigned melody “Jesu, der du meine Seele.” The same occurs again in Ermunternde Geistliche Seelen-Lust (1686) and later in Altdorffische neu-eingerichtete Lieder-Tafel (1734). —  Already in Sohr’s & Crüger’s Musicalischer Vorschmack (1693) we find an early 3-stanza version set to and fitting “Werde munter,” thus during the author’s lifetime, and perhaps by his pen or at least assent, though this transitional form, omitting stanza 2 and rearranging the last 4 lines of each stanza, is a little awkward and paves the way for the further alterations. —— This later form reappears in the Vermehrtes Hannoverisches Kirchen-Gsb (1745), no. 1019 (the very last hymn); likewise in the ed. 1759, both without ascription. It appears later in Electoral Palatinate (Ref.) hymnals as well. The ascription is also found (with reference to both titles) more explicitly in Heerwagen’s Literaturgeschichte I (1797), 164.

NOW have I my journey ended!
I am done, praise be to God,
With the travel I intended!
Blessing, glory, thanks and laud,
Jesus Christ, to Thee are fitting,
Who hast led me, oft unwitting,
Yonder, hither, with Thy hand,
Through so many a town and land!

2 That I have been unmolested
Cometh only from Thy pow’r;
That no foe my way arrested
I must thank Thee, Lord, my Tow’r;
That no sickness me attended,
Lord, Thou graciouly hast fended.
Briefly, Jesus, He Thou art,
Whom I thank with all my heart.

3 Jesus, Thou, Thy vigil keeping,
Hast escorting angels sent,
So that now my heart is leaping
And its joy is evident.

One more grace, that I may gain
Everlasting life in glory,
