Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Gott Vater uns sein Sohn vorstellt” (Nicolaus Herman, d. 1561; asc. Melchior Bischof, d. 1614), in ELGB #6. Fischer has no entry for it as such. I find it in the present form in Niedling’s Geistliche Wasserquelle (1667) and Johan Hegler’s Seckendorf Gsb 1708, p. 13. Earlier, however, the first stanza appears as the 7th, final stanza of Nicolaus Herman’s hymn for Advent I (with “blood” instead of “Word”), “Da Christus wollt ein Lösegeld” in his Sontag unnd fürnembsten Feste Evangelia (1580). Stanzas 2–4 are the final prayer-stanza from his hymns for Advent II, III, and IV resp.: “Christus uns treulich warnen thut,” “Als Sankt Johann wußt daß er sollt,” “Da Sankt Johannes am Jordan.” Thus by combining the final summarizing stanzas, a useful Advent hymn of general application was created. The appointed melody is “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.”

 

THE Father shows to us His Son
That we may all acclaim Him
Our great and mighty Champi-on:
So Holy Writ doth name Him.
He vict’ry gained and peace secured,
And saves us by His blessed Word.
In Him let us be trusting!

2 Upon Thine advent, Christ our Lord,
Our hope is surely founded;
That Day we all we shall be restored,
And with all joy surrounded.
Help us that we may watchful be
Until Thy angel host we see
When Thou for judgment comest.

3 Oh, Christ our Lord, Thy servants aid,
That we, by naught o’ertaken,
May stand like John who, unafraid,
By no wind-blast was shaken,
Nor dress in garments soft and gay,
But make for Thee a ready way,
The truth proclaiming freely.

4 O Jesus Christ, Thou Lamb of God,
To whom John’s finger pointed:
For us Thou bor’st the Father’s rod—
For This Thou wast anointed.
Therefore Thy church adoreth Thee,
Our Savior, who hast set us free!
Soon to Thy kingdom bring us!

Er ist allein der starke Held,
wie Ihn die Schrift thut nennen,
der Sieg erhält und Frieden schafft,
und uns durch sein Wort selig macht,
dem soll'n wir gläuben alle.

2 Auf Dein' Zukunft Herr Jesu Christ,
hoffen wir alle Stunden,
der jüngste Tag nicht fern mehr ist,
d'ran werden wir entbunden.
Hilf nur, daß wir fein wacker sein,
wenn du mit Deinen Engelein
zu dem Gericht wirst kommen.

3 Hilf, o Herr Christ! den Dienern Dein,
daß sie fest bleiben stehen,
und rechtschaff'ne Johannes sein'n,
keine'n Wind sich lass'n umwehen,
und zieh'n nicht weiche Kleider an,
bereiten Dir den Weg und Bahn
und die Wahrheit frei sagen.

4 O Gottes Lamm! Herr Jesu Christ!
auf den Johannes weiset,
