Steht auf, ihr lieben Kinderlein

Here is my translation of the children’s Epiphany hymn, “Steht auf, ihr lieben Kinderlein” (Erasmus Alber, d. 1553), in ELGB #73, first appearing in children’s hymn-booklet, Die Morgen-geseng für die Kinder . . . (1555), and with the author’s name in the Hamburg Enchiridion of 1558 (Low German), “Staet up, gy leven Kindelein,” and titled simply “Morning Hymn.” The appointed melody is “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her.”

ARISE, dear children, see the sight,
The morning-star with glory bright
Like as a champion doth appear
And lightens all things far and near.

2 Be welcome, O thou noble star,
Thou bring’st us Christ, our Lord, from far,
Who is the Savior of us all,
So let thy praise on all ears fall!

3 O children, at this star declare
That Jesus Christ is for us there,—
The Son of Mary, Christ our Lord,
Who lightens us with His dear Word

4 God’s Word, the morning-star thou art;
We pray thee ne’er from us depart.
Thou evermore must give us light,
Or else we dwell in darkness quite.

5 Our eyes with thy pure light regale
And Jesus Christ to us unveil;
Drive out the pow’r of darkness bold,
That love in us may not grow cold.

6 We bid thee welcome, blessed day!
Before thee night can never stay:
Shine in our hearts and make them bright
With thy celestial, saving Light.

7 O Jesus Christ, we wait for Thee!
Still let Thy Word shine constantly,
And tarry not, but come apace,
And bring us to Thy Father’s place.

Steht auf ihr lieben Kinderlein!
der Morgenstern mit hellem Schein
läßt sich frei sehn gleich wie ein Held
und leuchtet in die ganze Welt.

2 Bis willkommen, du edler Stern,
Du bringst uns Christum, unsern Herrn,
der unser aller Heiland ist,
darum Du hoch zu loben bist.

3 Ihr Kinder sollt bei diesem Stern
erkennen Christum unsern Herrn,
Marien Sohn, den treuen Hort,
der uns erleucht't mit seinem Wort.

4 Gotts Wort, Du bist der Morgenstern,
wir können Dein gar nicht entbehrn,
Du must uns leuchten immerdar,
sonst sitzen wir im Finstern gar.

5 Leucht uns mit deinem Glänzen klar,
und Jesum Christum offenbar,
jag aus der Finsternis Gewalt,
das nicht die Lieb in uns erkalt.

6 Bis willkommen Du lieber Tag,
für Dir die Nacht nicht bleiben mag,
leucht uns in unsre Herzen fein
mit Deinem himmelischen Schein.

7 O Jesu Christ! wir warten Dein,
Dein heil'ges Wort leucht uns so fein,
am End der Welt bleib nicht lang aus,
und führ' uns in Dein's Vaters Haus.
