Den Weisen scheint ein neuer Stern

Here is my translation of the Epiphany hymn, “Den Weisen scheint ein neuer Stern” (Ludwig Helmbold, d. 1598), in ELGB #65, appearing in the author’s Schöne Geistliche Lieder über alle Evangelia . . . (ed. 1615), p. 31, “On Epiphany Day, or the Appearing of Christ, concerning the Arrival of the Wise Men from the Orient, Matthew 2, to the melody ‘Von Himmel hoch da komm ich her’.” It is hence much earlier than the estimation of the Buffalo Synod. Why it lost its attribution in time is unclear. Fischer has no entry. Some hymnals ascribe it to the German-American publisher John Dreisbach (1789–1871), but of course its appearance far predates his birth. Yet in these hymnals, 9 rather than 6 stanzas (as attested in early hymnals) are found, suggesting that Dreisbach’s authorship is applied the 3 additional stanzas; his version begins “An Weisen schien ein neuer Stern.” The appointed melody in the Buffalo hymnal, despite all historical preference, is “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir.”

 

ON wise men shines a novel star;
They come from Eastern lands afar,
And in Jerusalem they seek
The newborn King so pure and meek.


2 Hereat is Herod troubled sore,
Afraid to give his kingdom o’er;
With him the town is filled with dread
When they should have rejoiced instead.

3 For they discern in Micah’s tome,
The Ruler would from Bethl’hem come,
Who is eternal, from of old,
And thus would seek no throne nor gold.


4 While Jews and Herod hearken not,
On heathen men, by Micah taught,
Who trust the Word, a light is poured,
That leads them to the newborn Lord.


5 Before the Child with gifts they kneel:
Gold, frankincense, and myrrh reveal,
And testify that He is King
Who by His death shall heaven bring.


6 Lord Christ, appear to us as well,
In Word and Spirit with us dwell;
Our incense, gold, and myrrh let be
To praise the Father, One with Thee.

1 Den Weisen scheint ein neuer Stern,
aus Morgenland kommen sie fern
und fragen zu Jerusalem,
wo der neu König sei daheim?

2 Herodes wird drüber bestürzt,
fürchtet sein Reich werd ihm verkürzt,
die ganze Stadt erschrickt mit ihm;
sie sollten alle fröhlich sein!

3 Denn sie finden in Micha stehn,
daß der Herzog zu Bethlehem,
sein Ausgang hab von Ewigkeit,
drum sucht Er kein Vergänglichkeit.

4 Herodes mit den Juden irrt,
die Heiden, aus Micha gelehrt,
glauben der Schrift, den leucht der Stern,
bringt sie zum neugebornen Herrn.

5 Für dem Kindlein sie niederknien,
opfern Ihm Gold, Weihrauch und Myrrhn
bezeugen, daß es König sei,
ein Mittler auch im Tode frei.

6 Herr Christ, erschein uns auch also,
gieb Dein Wort und Dein Geist dazu,
das wir opfern Gold, Weihrauch, Myrrhn,
Dich mit dem Vater geistlich ehrn. Amen.
