Here is my translation of the Easter hymn, “Christo dem Oster-Lämmelein” (Nicolaus Herman, d. 1561), in ELGB #131, a paraphrase of sequence Victimae paschali laudes from the author’s Sontags-Evangelia (Wittenberg, 1560), where above each stanza is indicated the first few words of the analogous Latin text. The earlier version (as noted by my annotations below) had several variants, and our stanza 3 appeared originally as two stanzas, later combined. In addition, our stanza 8 was at first lacking. These changes in later additions of Sontags-Evangelia made the text agree more closely with the sequence. Herman indicates the melody “Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag,” called in the Buffalo synod hymnal after the name of a stanza of that hymn, “Am Sabbath früh Marien drei.” I also include a proper melody from Stenger 1663.
TO Christ the Paschal Lamb today,
Who did His flock’s redemption pay,
All Christians sing, All glory be
To God now and eternally!

For us the Father’s love did gain,
To favor true the sinner brought,
And him an heir of heaven wrought.
