Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel… (und hast…)

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, und hast als ein König gerecht” (asc. Bartholomäus Helder, d.), in ELGB #19, originally in the Gotha Cantional (from at least 1646ff.) with title “for four voices, by Helder,” indicating only the melody, though in Wetzel and in the Coburg Gsb 1655, Helder is also given as author; so in later hymnals. It is to be distinguished from Martin Behm’s 14-stanza Advent hymn “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, und dich zum Menschen hast gewandt,” etc. The Buffalo Synod hymnal also ascribes it to “Barthold [sic] Helder, 1635.” But it assigns no melody. Fischer indicates “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir.” I include also the original 4-voice setting by Helder.

 

 

WE thank Thee, Jesus, dearest Friend,
That Thou from heaven didst descend,
And as our King didst righteously
Redeem and save humanity.

2 To Salem’s gates we see Thee pass,
All meek and mild upon an ass;
The people all Hosanna sing,
And praise their God, the highest King.

3 So from us, Lord, do not depart,
But enter into every heart,
Nor let the devil, death, and sin
O’er us the slightest mast’ry win.

4 So we with songs of loud acclaim
Will everywhere extol Thy name,
Till to Jerusalem on high
To Thee and all Thy host we fly.

2. Und zu Jerusalem zeuchst ein
Sanftmütig auf ein Eselein,
Das Volk singt Hosianna schon
Und Ehr sei Gott im höchsten Thron.

3. Also wollst, Herr, auch bei uns sein,
In unsre Herzen ziehen ein,
Daß uns der Teufel, Tod und Sünd,
Mit seiner Macht nicht überwind.

4. So wollen wir mit großem Schall
Dein Namen rühmen überall,
Bis wir in Himmel gehen ein
Zu dir und deinen Engelein.
