O Vater, Gott von ewigkeit!

Here is my translation of the catechism (creedal) hymn on the Trinity, “O Vater, Gott von ewigkeit!” (Salomo Liscow, d. 1689), in GGELB #181 with melody assignment “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr” and omitting stanza 9; first published in the author’s devotional Christlicheit Frauen-Zimmers Geistlicher Tugend-Spiegel (Leipzig, 1672). One stanza is devoted to the Godhead, two to each Person of the Trinity, one to the revelation of the Trinity, and finally (omitted in GGELB) a stanza of personal application for a conclusion.

  

O GOD, th’ eternal Father Thou,
The Godhead’s very Fountain,
All Christian lands before Thee bow,
Whose throne on Zion’s mountain
In majesty surpasses all,
And heav’n and earth stand at Thy call
And do Thee service fitting.

2 As Father Thou Thine only Son
Begottest ere the ages,
And heaven’s choir before His throne
In ceaseless praise engages;
As Father Thou this world hast made
And into light all creatures laid
And fatherly sustainèd.

3 Be therefore to Thy children still
A Father fond and tender,
Help all poor sinners, stem all ill,
And be our great Defender,
That of Thy kindness day by day,
In good times and in bad we may
Have comfort, food, and shelter.

4 God’s Son, the Father’s Image true,
Eternally begotten,
And finally in season due
As Mediator brought in,
True God and Man, in person One,
Who didst for all men’s sin atone
And, dying, heaven win them:

5 As God Thou at the Father’s right
On heaven’s throne art sitting
To shield us from the devil’s spite
And warfare unremitting;
Oh, help us by Thy precious blood,
That from the Father every good
We may expect forever!

6 O Holy Ghost, Thou welcome One,
Into all truth who leadest,
Who from the Father and the Son
Eternally proceedest,
Sweet Comforter, and dearest Friend,
The Crown and Treasure without end
Of all Thy dear believers:

7 Come, very God, in strength restore
The saints to life elected,
Life’s unction in our spirit pour,
Soothe every heart dejected,
Be Thou our Shield and Tow’r of might,
Our soul’s dear Prize and joyous Light,
Our spirit’s Life abiding!

8 O blessed Holy Trinity
The Lord of hosts almighty,
Who hast so willed to show us Thee,
That we might name Thee rightly
God Father, Son, and Holy Ghost—
The name confessed by all Thy host!
For this we gladly thank Thee!

*9 For he that knows Thee properly,
Has life and all desire,
And he that burns for love of Thee,
Thou soon canst lift him higher,
For when this troublous season’s o’er,
In light of gladness evermore
He can behold Thee truly.

O Vater, Gott von Ewigkeit,
der Gottheit wahre Quelle!
Dich ehrt die ganze Christenheit,
denn deines Thrones Stelle
ist herrlich voller Majestät,
daß billig dir zu Dienste steht
der Himmel samt der Erde.

2 Als Vater hast du deinen Sohn
von Ewigkeit gezeuget,
daß sich vor seiner Gottheit Thron
der Chor der Engel neiget;
als Vater hast du diese Welt
und alles an das Licht gestellt,
auch väterlich erhalten.

3 Drum bleib noch ferner zugethan,
als Vater deinen Kindern,
und nimm dich unsrer Wohlfahrt an,
hilf allen armen Sündern,
daß wir von deiner Mildigkeit
zur guten und zur bösen Zeit
Trost, Schutz und Nahrung haben.

4 Gott Sohn, des Vaters Ebenbild,
von Ewigkeit geboren,
und endlich, da die Zeit erfüllt,
als Mittler auserkoren,
ein wahrer Gott und Mensch zugleich,
der du der Welt dein Himmelreich
durch deinen Tod erworben.

5 Als Gott besitzest du den Thron
zu deines Vaters Rechten,
uns wider allen Neid und Hohn
des Teufels zu verfechten:
Ach hilf uns durch dein theures Blut,
daß uns dein Vater bleibe gut,
und ewiglich gewogen.

6 O Heilger Geist, du werther Gast,
der Frommen Schatz und Krone!
Der du den Ausgang ewig hast
vom Vater und vom Sohne,
du süßer Tröster, treuster Freund!
Der du die deinen wohlgemeint
in alle Wahrheit leitest.

7 Komm, wahrer Gott, mit deiner Kraft
zu deinen Auserwählten,
gib uns den rechtem Lebenssaft
und tröste die Gequälten.
Bleib unser Schutz und Zuversicht,
der Seelen Schatz und Freudenlicht,
und unsers Geistes Leben.

8 O heilige Dreieinigkeit,
Jehova der Heerscharen!
der du dich deiner Christenheit
hast wollen offenbaren:
daß du mit deinem Namen heißt
Gott Vater, Sohn und Heilger Geist,
wir danken dir mit Freuden.

9 Denn wer dich, Gott, recht weiß und kennt,
der hat das rechte Leben,
und wer von deiner Liebe brennt,
den kannst du bald erheben,
daß er, nach dieser trüben Zeit,
im Licht der frohen Ewigkeit
dich wesentlich kann schauen.
