Ich glaub an einen Gott, der heißt

Here is my translation of the catechism/creed hymn, “Ich glaub an einen Gott, der heißt” (Christoph Starke, d. 1830), in GGELB #220 with melody assignment “Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.” The author is named by Richter in his Biographisches Lexikon (Leipzig, 1804) without indication of source. Fischer finds it anonymous in Schöber’s Lieder-Segen (1768). In Christoph Starke’s own Sechsfache Ordnung des Heils in Tabellen (1732, 1744), it appears under the heading “Third Order of Salvation, in short rimes, which can also be used as a prayer or a hymn.” The earlier readings from this source I have put in the German below, and the variants in GGELB in square brackets.

 

IN one true God I trust and boast:
God Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Who made from naught the world’s domains
And all still wondrously sustains.

2 Man was of God the image good,
With wisdom, love, and pow’r imbued
The fall both sin and death then brought,
And us in Satan’s image wrought.

3 This moved God in th’ eternal clime,
Who sent His Son to us in time
True God and Man, called Jesus Christ,
To be all men’s Redeemer prized.

4 The Savior bore our grievous lot,
By cross and death our race He bought
From sin and hell, from death and grave,
Us all to reconcile and save.

5 The Holy Spirit by the Word
And Sacraments gives what the Lord
By dying won, and makes alive

Doth offer true faith in the Lord,
And works it where it meets no strife,
And is Himself the pledge of life. (revised)

6 Whoe’er repents, in Christ believes,
Lives rightly, till the ending cleaves,
Is God’s own child, and God is his,
And, dying, goes to heav’nly bliss.

7 But he who God resists and spurns,
And lives in sin and never turns,
Is Satan’s child, who God denies,
And at his death to torment flies.

8 Lord Jesus Christ, my thanks to Thee! [Oh, help, Lord Christ, my Helper be,]
I pray Thee, give true faith to me,
So shall I be from trespass freed
And here and yonder blest in deed.

Ich gläub an einen Gott, der heißt:
Gott Vater, Sohn und Heilger Geist;
der schuf aus nichts die ganze Welt,
die er noch wunderbar erhält.

2 Der Mensch war Gottes Ebenbild,
mit Weisheit, Lieb und Kraft erfüllt:
der Fall hat Sünd und Tod gebracht
und uns zu Satans Bild gemacht.

3 Dies jammert Gott von Ewigkeit,
gab seinen Sohn uns in der Zeit,
der Gott und Mensch, heißt Jesus Christ,
und aller Menschen Heiland ist.

4 Der Heiland träget unsre Noth, [Denn er nahm auf sich…,]
erlöste uns durch Kreuz und Tod
von Sünden, Tod und Höllenpein,
daß wir versöhnt und selig sein.

5 Der Heilge Geist beut jedermann
