Mein lieber Herr, ich preise dich

Here is my translation of the hymn “Mein lieber Herr, ich preise dich” (E. Alber, 1550), a paraphrase of the Magnificat appearing early on, e.g., in the Hamburg Enchiridion 1565 with a melody in LMD (it will be noted that the stanzas are easily divided and sung to a LM melody, such as that for “Mein Seel, O Gott”). To Alber is also ascribed another metrical Magnificat, “Mein Seel, o Gott, muß loben dich.” The present one is notable for its looser, more idiosyncratic treatment.

Mel.: Mein lieber Herr, ich preise dich.

DEAR Lord, I glory give to Thee,
With all my heart sing joyfully,
That I, Thy maid of lowly place,
Have been regarded by Thy grace.
All children of my God shall say
I am a blessed maid for aye;
Thou by Thy mighty pow’r hast brought
Me to so hon’rable a lot.

2 Thy name deserves acclaim always,
Therefore men justly give Thee praise,
Thou helpest all men mightily
If they will only look to Thee.
But those who proudly ’gainst Thee strain,
Desiring over Thee to reign,
With all their pomp Thou turn’st to naught,
Thou hast their ending swiftly brought.

3 What they would do to Thee in pride
In every case is turned aside,
For Thou wilt bear no haughtiness,
Thou brought’st them swiftly to distress.
Thou look’st on all humility,
The poor are subject unto Thee
Them wilt Thou not abandon e’er,
The haughty rich Thou leavest bare.

4 As in the past Thou e’er hast done,
Thou dost Thy church’s cause take on,
Remembering Thy mercy great
In our most desperate estate.
For Israel, Thy flock so slight,
Is in the world forsaken quite
Therefore Thou comest seas’nably,
When she cries heartily to Thee.

5 This have we not deserved of Thee,
Thou dealest with us graciously,
Unto our fathers word was giv’n,
Which Thou regarded hast in heav’n.
Yea, Abraham the precious man
Thou hast a precious promise made,
And heaven’s kingdom to him sworn,
And to his seed that would be born.

GERMAN
Mein lieber Gott ich preise dich,
von ganzem Herzen freu ich mich,
daß ich dem arme Dienerin
mit Gnaden angesehen bin.
All Gotteskinder werden mich
des selig sprechen ewiglich,
du hast mich durch dein große Macht
zu solchen großen Ehren bracht.

2 Dein Nam ist aller Ehren werth,
drum man dich billich rühmt und ehrt.
Du nimmst dich aller Menschen an,
wann sie dich nur vor augen han.
Die aber wider dich stolziern
und wollen über dich regiern
zerstörest du mit ihrem Pracht;
du hast ihr bald ein End gemacht.

3 Was sie gedenken wider dich,
das geht doch allzeit hinder sich,
dann Hoffart kannst du leiden nicht,
du hast sie gar bald hingericht,
du siehst allem die Demut an,
die Armen seind dir underthan,
die willt du lassen nimmermehr,
die stolzen Reichen läßt du lehr.

4 Wie du vor allzeit hast gethan,
so nimmst du dich auch unser an,
und denkest der Barmherzigkeit
in unserm großen Herzenleid,
dann Israel, dein arme Schar,
ist in der Welt verlassen gar,
drum köpft du jetzt zu rechter Zeit,
weil sie so herzlich zu dir schreit.

5 Wir habens nit verdient um dich,
du fährst mit uns genädiglich,
zu unsern Vätern ist geschehn,
ein Wort das hast du angesehn,
ja Abraham dem theuren Mann,
dem hast du selbs ein Eid gethan,
und ihm geredt das Himmelreich,
und seinem Samen ewiglich.

Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, / der den Tod überwand (Alber)

In preparation for my translation of Lochner’s Easter-book (Eastertide counterpart to the Passion-book), tentatively slated for publication in 2026, I have undertaken to translate a number of previously untranslated hymns, as well as to provide a few new translations for those already in English, because of copyrights or just because it seemed like a diverting exercise. I begin this new series with a Lutheran revision of the Regina cæli: “Jesus Christus, unser Heiland, / der den Tod überwand,” a text earlier attempted by Luther in 1524. Alber’s text is not closely related to, though perhaps inspired by, Luther’s. My translation owes a little to Bacon in the first part, nevertheless. It is notable that the Latin text is retained in conjunction with the German, and may indicate singing in alternation between choir and congregation. Lochner gives only the German of stanzas 1–3. The images for the original text and melody below come from Wolf’s Kirchengesäng (1591).

 Mel.: Jesus Christus, unser Heiland.*

O SPONSA Christi laetare. Alleluia! [O bride of Christ, rejoice]
Jesus Christ, our– Savior, who
Death for us overthrew,
Is now arisen,
And hath bound up sin and death in prison.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

2 Quia qui crucem pro te portavit. Alleluia! [Because He who bore the cross for thee]
Sinless born, God’s wrath He bore,
Us to God did restore,
Thus did our Savior
Move God to regard us with all favor.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

3 Resurrexit, sicut dixit.  Alleluia! [Is risen as He said]
Grace, sin, devil, life– and death
All in His hand He hath;
He can deliver
All those who in faith will seek Him ever.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

4 Oremus omnes Deum. [Let us all pray God]
Rejoice, thou holy Church, in the Lord’s grace,
Christ prepared for thee a place:
Where He is thou may’st be,
Therefore, Lord Jesus Christ, praise be to Thee!

Alleluia! Alleluia!

5 Ergo domine, rex cælestis, Deus alme, [Therefore, O Lord, King of heaven, gracious God]
sit sempiterna gloria tibi. [Eternal glory be to Thee]

Christ, by His holy
death, hath
Us redeemed– from– death;
He, by His death hath put to death / everlasting death,
And rescued us / from endless wrath.
Alleluia!

6 Quoniam te decet laus et honor, o domine, [For praise and honor befit Thee, O Lord]
qui mortem moriendo vicisti. [Who by dying hast conquered death]

Mary, Christ’s own Mo–ther true,
Now thy joy renew!
He by thee conceivèd
Is risen, and from the dead retrievèd.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

7 Fac nos tecum surgere. Halleluia. [Make us to rise again with Thee]
God by His favor
Let us walk in lives of newness ever.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

Gelobet sei der Herr, der Gott

Here for my next instalment in the Benedictus hymn series is my translation of “Gelobet sei der Herr, der Gott (E. Alberus, 1561). The tune is “Erbarm dich mein, O Herre Gott.”

BLEST BE Israel’s God, the Lord,
Who in our need His love outpoured
And visited with boundless grace
His people cursed with sin’s disgrace,
Redeemed us lest in death we die,
And raised salvation’s horn on high
Within His servant David’s house
To save alive the Church, His spouse.

2. This wondrous love, this gracious hour,
Came not by our own fallen pow’r,
But God declared since days of old
And by His prophets’ mouths foretold
The tidings of His promise dear,
That He in grace would draw us near
Deliv’ring us from every foe
That we to Him in heav’n might go.

3. ‘Twas naught but God’s mercifulness
That He showed us in our distress
Remembering His cov’nant sure,
The oath that long ago He swore
With holy lips that cannot lie,
To him on whom He cast His eye:
Our faithful father Abraham,
Through whom our true salvation came.

4. God’s heart was moved with pity great
When He beheld the wretched state
In which the world a pris’ner lay
Afflicted by the devil aye,
Oh everlasting, gracious God!
How great Thy love, how deep and broad,
When Thou didst pledge th’ eternal crown
To sinners through Thine only Son!

5. Now since Christ our redemption gains
From sin and death and countless pains,
We need not fear the devil’s pow’r,
For he is judged and bides his hour.
Now God will be our Father dear
Him only let us serve and fear,
With service that well pleases Him
While yet we walk earth’s valley dim.

6. Yet, dearest child, regarding thee,
The Most High’s prophet shalt thou be!
To cry His advent is thy part,
To preach the Lord with all thy heart,
His way to ready smooth and straight,
That every man may Him await;
And needful knowledge to afford
Of man’s salvation: Christ our Lord.

7. This shall thy teaching be, that men
Forgiveness find for all their sin
By tender mercy of our God,
Who evermore shall spare the rod.
This is a gift surpassing all
Come down to us from heaven’s hall—
Here brightly shines Christ’s Godhead high,
As doth the Sunrise in the sky.

8. He is the Father’s Radiance true,
Who doth our heart with light imbue
And by His arm of boundless might
Delivered us from sin’s dark night,
Which did o’er every man impend,
Who were by Satan e’er condemned,—
The straying of our foot to cease
And guide us in the way of peace.

9. O gracious Holy Trinity,
Hear us, Thy church, which praises Thee,
And cannot give Thee thanks enough
That Thou, Our Father, full of love,
Hast given us Thine only Son
Who our release from Satan won,
And sent the Holy Ghost below
That we Thy Son might truly know.

GERMAN
1. Gelobet sei der Herr, der Gott
Israel, der in dieser Not
sein Völklein, das da war verflucht,
mit Gnaden hat daheim gesucht
und uns erlöst vom ewigen Zorn,
und aufgericht ein heilsam Horn
in seines Dieners David Haus!
es war sonst ewig mit uns draus.

2. Solch überschwenklich groß Genad
kommt uns nicht her aus unserm Rath,
sie ist vorzeiten worden kund
durch seinr hehilgen Propheten Mund,
durch welche Gott verheissen hat,
er wöll von Sünden, Hell, und Tod
und allen Feinden gnädiglich
sein Volk erlösen ewiglich.

3. Es ist eitel Barmherzigkeit,
die Gott in unserm Herzen Leid
erzeigt und denkt an seinen Bund,
wie er mit seinem heilgen Mund
ein Eid vorzeiten hat geschworn,
eim mann, den er hat auserkorn,
unserm Vater, dem Abraham:
das Heil kommt uns aus seinem Stamm.

4. Gott seines Herzen Grund aufschloß,
da er ansah das Elend groß
darin die WElt gefangen lag
und hat vom Teufel ewig Plag!
Ach lieber Gott in Ewigkeit,
wie groß war dein Barmherzigkeit,
da du verheißt die ewge Kron
durch deinen eingebornen Sohn!

5. Dieweil wir nu erlöset sein
von Sünden, Tod und ewger Pein,
so sollen wir uns fürchten nicht
vorm Teufel: er ist schon gericht.
Gott will nu unser Vater sein,
dem wöllen wir auch dienen allein
weil wir leben in dieser Welt
mit solchem Dienst der ihm gefällt.

6. Und du, mein liebes Kindelein,
wirst ein Prophet des Höchsten sein!
Du wirst von unserm lieben Herrn
verkündigen von Herzen gern
und seinen Weg bereiten wohl,
daß jedermann sein warten soll;
du wirst das Volk erkennen lehrn
das ewig Heil Christi unsers Herrn.

7. Das wird die Lehr sein, daß man könnt
Vergebung haben aller Sünd
durch herzliche Barmherzigkeit
unsers Gottes in Ewigkeit.
Das ist ein überschwenklich Gab,
die kommt uns aus der Höh herab,
die Gottheit Christi leucht herein,
gleichwie der Sonnen Aufgang fein.

8. Er ist allein des Vaters Glanz,
der unser Herz erleuchtet ganz,
er hat uns durch sein grosse Macht
errettet von der finstern Nacht
darin wir sassen allesamt,
von Satan ewiglich verdammt,
daß unser Füß aufrichtig stehn
und auf dem Weg des Friedes gehn.

9. Du heilige Dreifaltigkeit,
dein auserwählte Christenheit
kann nicht genug voll loben dich,
daß du, ihr Vater, gnädiglich
dein eingen Sohn gegeben hast,
der sie vom Teufel hat erlöst,
und auch den heilgen Geist gesendt,
dadurch sie deinen Sohn erkennt.

Ihr lieben Christen, freut euch nun

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn “Ihr lieben Christen, freut euch nun” (E. Alber, 1546). It is appointed by Ludecus for Advent II, Trinity XXV, Trinity XXVI, and the Feast of St. Catherine. A number of stanzas containing references to the Pope, the Turk, and the imminent end of the world appear to have been generally omitted from later hymnals (e.g., EGB has stanzas 1, 2, 4, 13, and 18). One or two lines which have alternate versions are noted in brackets to the right of the line. The melody is “Nun freut euch Gottes Kinder all,” here from Geistliche Lieder (Nuremb. 1580).

1. Rejoice, rejoice ye Christians dear,
For God’s own Son shall soon appear,
Our Brother He hath come to be:
Christ Jesus, our dear Lord is He.

2. The Final Day is drawing near.
Come, Jesus Christ, our Lord most dear!
Each day we wait expectantly
And sorely long to be with Thee.

3. The Antichrist hath been exposed,
His blasphemy and lies disclosed,
And set beneath the shadeless light
Wherefore he daily rues his plight.

4. O Jesus Christ, our Savior true,
The time of fullnes now we view
Of which we have heard Daniel tell,
So come, O dear Immanuel!

5. Saint Simeon did wait for Thee,
O’erjoyed at Thy proximity,
His pray’r its answer did acquire,
When he beheld his heart’s desire.

6. He said, “With joy I now can die,
For here Salvation greets mine eye,
I need not have a grieving heart:
In peace, not pain, I now depart.”

7. So also we abide the hour
And pray to Thee with all our pow’r,
No longer Thy return forestall,
But shut for good the serpent’s maul.

8. The murderer of all mankind
His fill of lies can never find,
So take him and his sland’rous school
And cast them in the fiery pool

9. Thy children all await the day
When all the world must pass away,
And Satan’s reign is crushed at last
And in eternal shame is cast.

10. The devil on Thy name hath hurled,
Such foul abuse, and blinds the world
He builds a crown of deaf and dumb,
And wills not that Thy kingdom come

11. What Thou commandest, he reviles,
And fiercely plots with all his wiles,
And all Thy gen’rous hand bestows
He seeks to steal from ‘neath our nose.

12. So hard a war doth Satan wage
That few repent, and many rage
Against Thy Word; he doth incite
Great envy, murder, wrath, and spite.

13. The devil seeks to make us fall
Deceive, devour and strip us all
Of body, soul, good name, and gold,
Lord Christ, restrain that dragon old!

14. The world is in its last travail,
’Tis old and weak, and soon must fail,
It groans and sighs beneath its load
And makes as if ’twill soon implode.

15. Creation can no longer be
Subjected to such vanity,
It longs for freedom from the Turk, [It longs to snap the vicious cord]
His blasphemy and bloody work. [Of Satan’s tyranny and sword]

16. The pope hath crushed it with such guilt,
And wrecked the order that was built,
The world, with us, would fain be free,
And thus we wait Thy help to see!

17. The fathers all abode the day
When Thou wouldst come with loud array,
WIth all Thy heav’nly company,—
They waited many a century.

18. Ah! dearest Lord, Thy judgment speed,
And show Thy glorious face, we plead,
The presence of the Trinity!
God help us all eternally. Amen.

sind offenbar und gar am Tag,
deß führt er täglich große klag.

4. Du treuer Heiland Jesu Christ,

dieweil die Zeit erfüllet ist,

die uns verkündet Daniel,

und deiner Zukunft freuet sich,
er ward auch seiner Bitt gewehrt,
da er sah was sein Herz begehrt.

6. Er sprach, Nun willi ch sterben gern,
weil ich gesehn hab meinen HErrn,
doch soll es nicht gestorben sein,
sondern im Friede fahr ich fein.

7. So warten wir nun auch der Stund,
und bitten dich von Herzengrund,
du wollest nicht ausbleiben lang,
und strafn einmal die alte Schlang.

8. Der alle Welt ermördet hat,
und kann nicht liegens werden satt,
den nimm sammt seiner Lesterschul,
und wirf sie in den feuring Pfuhl.

9. Dein liebe Kinder warten all,
wenn doch einmal die Welt zerfall,
und wenn des teufels Reich zergeh
und er in ewign Schaden steh.

10. Er ist der deinen Namen schändt,
und der die armen Leut verblendt,
der böse Geist sucht seinen Ruhm,
und hindert daß dein Reich nicht komm.

11. Was du befehlst das lästert er,
und tobt dawider greulich sehr,
was uns beschert dein milde Hand,
das nehm uns gern der Höllenbrand.

12. Der Satan hört nicht auf zu wehrn,
daß sich so wenig Leut bekehren,
er wendt die Leut von deinen Wort,
und richtet an Haß, Neid, und Mord.

13. Der Teufel brächt uns gern zu Fall

und wollt uns gern verschlingen all;

er tracht' nach Leib, Seel, Gut und Ehr.

Herr Christ, dem alten Drachen wehr.

14. Die Welt kann nun nicht länger stehn,
ist schwach und alt sie muß vergehn,
sie kracht an allen Orten sehr,
und kann die Last nicht tragen mehr.

15. Die Kreatur nicht länger kann,
der Eitelkeit sein unterthan,
und wollt gern werden wieder frei,
vons Türken Mord und Heuchelei. [vons Teufels Mord und Tyrannei]

16. Der Babst hat sich so hart beschwert, [Der Papst hat sie...]
und all gute Ordnung verkehrt,
drum wär sie gern sammt uns erlöst,
wir hoffen all auf deinen Trost.

17. Die alten Väter warten all,
wenn du erscheinst mit großen Schall
mit aller lieben Engel Schar,
drauf warten sie manch hundert Jahr.

18. Ach lieber Herr, eil zum Gericht! [Eil, lieber...]

Laß sehn dein herrlich Angesicht,

das Wesen der Dreifaltigkeit.

Das helf uns Gott in Ewigkeit. Amen.
