O großer Gott, wir sehens frei

Here is my translation of the hymn in time of pestilence, “O großer Gott, wir sehens frei” (? Johann Heermann, d. 1647), in GGELB #164 with title “During sickness and epidemics” and melody assignment “Wenn wir in höchsten Nöthen sein,” where it is ascribed to the Breslau Gsb 1745. But it seems first to appear in Heermann’s Schlußglöcklein (II, 1632; also posthumous revised Neu umgegossen und verbessertes Schluß-Glöcklein, 1711), under the heading “time of pestilence,” in 17 rhymed couplets without melody, obviously as a devotional hymn (see Mützell, Geistliche Lieder I, p. 98). Oels 1716 includes a revised text as 8 stanzas (omitting one couplet as noted below) in the form more or less indicated by the bracketed alterations and found in GGELB, beginning “O Grosser Gott, itzt sehn wir frey] and with melody assignment “Wenn wir in höchsten Nöthen sein.” Caspar Neumann, in his Vollkommenes Schlesisches KGsb (1727; Mützell erroneously 1738), has the same revised text under the title “For the turning away of pestilence.”

 

TOO well we see, O mighty God, [O mighty God, we clearly see]
The tokens of Thy furious rod [Thy wrath is kindled mightily!]
Already held within Thine hand [Thy rod is ready in Thine hand]
To chasten our beloved land.

2 The foul and pois’nous pestilence
Gives here and there its evidence,
Because our sin and error hath
Provoked Thee to this righteous wrath.

3 O Father, whither shall we go?
We turn to Thee with heart bent low,
We seek Thy face on bended knee:
Let us not die so wretchedly!

4 This grief we surely merited
With all our sins unnumberèd,
Which we repent with sorrow now,
And beg Thy tender heart to bow.

5 Amid this danger and distress
Protect us with Thy wings of grace;
Defend us, that this sickness may
Not find to home and church a way.

6 O faithful God, in mercy spare
All those who now this mis’ry bear!
Command Thine angel to make haste,
And let disease’s darts be chased.

7 Oh, hear them! Strength and patience give,
Thy creatures pardon, let them live.
For they are bought by Jesus’ blood,
Therefore give them Thy shelter good.

8 So may we all give praise to Thee,
In time and in eternity,
For all Thy graces sent from heav’n.
O Jesus Christ, speak Thine Amen!
