Fegt aus, fegt aus, fegt fleißig aus

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn, “Fegt aus, fegt aus, fegt fleißig aus” (Johann Olearius, d. 1684), on 1 Cor. 5:6–8, in GGELB #105 with omission of the first stanza and beginning “Wir haben auch ein Osterlamm” with melody assignment “Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag.” Fischer has no entry for either form. I find it in five stanzas and no textual variants in Lüneburg 1694, Riga 1695, Pomerania 1735, Hamburg 1766, etc.

 

PURGE out, purge out, no more withhold!
It must depart, that leaven old;
Ye must be holy, good, and clean,
A new lump, not as ye have been.
Hallelujah!

2 A paschal Lamb we also have,
Hung on the cross, mankind to save:
’Tis Christ, for sin the Sacrifice,
Who did this day from death arise.
Hallelujah!

3 Then let us keep the feast today,
With righteousness, the fitting way;
For leaven cannot there abide
Where paschal joys is multiplied.
Hallelujah!

4 Malice and wickedness away!
With these th’ unleavened cannot stay.
Faith brings the true sincerity,
And shall our paschal garment be.
Hallelujah!

5 Praise to the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit with them One!
To God the Holy Trinity
All glory now and ever be!

Fegt aus, fegt aus, fegt fleißig aus
der alte Saurteig muß heraus,
ihr müßt sein heilig, fromm und rein,
ein neuer Teig müßt ihr nur sein.
Halleluja.

2 Wir haben auch ein Osterlamm,
das für uns hing am Kreuzesstamm,
das Sündenopfer Jesus Christ,
der heut vom Tod erstanden ist.
Halleluja.

3 Drum laßt uns unsre Ostern heut
recht feiern mit Gerechtigkeit;
der Sauerteig findt keine Statt,
wo man recht Osterfreude hat.
Halleluja.

4 Weg Bosheit, Schalkheit, Büberei!
Der Süßteig kann nicht stehn dabei.
Der Glaub bringt wahre Lauterkeit,
das ist das rechte Osterkleid.
Halleluja.

5 Ehr sei dem Vater und dem Sohn
samt heilgem Geist in einem Thron;
der heiligen Dreieinigkeit
sei Ehr und Preis in Ewigkeit.
