Dreieinigkeit! der Gottheit wahrer Spiegel

Here is my supplemental translation of the Trinity hymn, “Dreieinigkeit! der Gottheit wahrer Spiegel” (Johann Franck, d. 1677), in ELGB #201, based on Romans 11:33–36, earlier included in the author’s Teutsche Gedichte (Guben, 1674). The original in only 7 stanzas (the 8th is also by Franck, however), is found in Christoph Peters’ Andachts-Zymbeln (Freyberg/Meissen, 1655) with Peters’ own melody. Crüger has another melody (here given first).
  

 

 

 

O TRINITY, the Godhead’s true reflection!
O Light of Light, that, spread in each direction,
With might enfolds the world in shelt’ring wings,
And holds in being all created things!

2 We praise Thee when the sunlight first awaketh,
And when she late to sleep herself betaketh;
All things that live and move, by sea and land,
Forever ready at Thy service stand.

3 O boundless Treasure, unconfinèd Being!
What eye could e’er that mystery be seeing?
O Fountain deep, O Splendor unexplored!
How great, alas, how great Thy pow’r, O Lord!

4 What man can here, O Lord, Thy ways discover?
How shall a man Thy judgment fathom ever?
Begone, poor Reason! away, away with thee!
Too simple here is Thy sagacity.

5 Away with all Thy feeble sense and thinking;
Thou in God’s wisdom must at last be sinking;
Unless God shall to thee instruction give,
Thou shalt be lost and in stark error live.

6 Then teach us, Lord, to know without dividing
The Three in One, and One in Three abiding;
Oh, let us know Thee One in Persons three,
God Father, Son, and Spirit, perfectly.

7 Grant that this Word may sound among us ever:
"Glory to Him, the mighty God, our Savior,
By whom, through whom, in whom all beings are!"
Grant us to echo on this song afar!

8 Thy Name is great; Thy kingdom dwell within us,
Thy will compel us and with pow’r sustain us!
Spare us, redeem us in the evil hour,
For Thine’s the glory, Thine the rule, the pow’r.

True mirror of the Godhead! Perfect Light!
Thou Three in One, whose never-slumbering might
Enfolds the world within its sheltering wings,
And holds in being all created things!

2 We praise Thee with the earliest morning ray,
We praise Thee with the parting beam of day;
All things that live and move, by sea and land,
For ever ready at Thy service stand.

3 Exhaustless Treasure! Being limitless!
What gaze hath ever pierced Thy deep abyss?
Deep Fount of Life! Light inaccessible!
How great Thy power, O God, what tongue can tell?

7 Thy Christendom is singing night and day,
"Glory to Him, the mighty God, for aye,
By Whom, through Whom, in Whom all beings are!"
Grant us to echo on this song afar!

8 Thy Name is great, Thy kingdom in us dwell,
Thy will constrain and feed and guide us well;
Spare us, redeem us in the evil hour,
For Thine the glory, Thine the rule, the pow’r.

Dreieinigkeit! der Gottheit wahrer Spiegel,
o Licht vom Licht! als dessen Allmachts-Flügel
sich um und um durch diesen Erdkreis streckt,
und alle Welt mit seinem Schirm bedeckt.

2 Wir loben Dich, sobald die Sonn erwachet,
und wenn sie jetzt die späten Abend machet;
was lebt und webt auf dieser Erden weit,
ist alles, Herr, zu Deinem Dienst bereit.

3 O reicher Schatz! o unumschränktes Wesen!
Wer hat wohl je die Heimlichkeit gelesen?
O tiefer Brunn, o unerforschte Pracht!
wie groß, ach Gott! wie groß ist Deine Macht.

4 Wer kann doch hier, Herr deine Weg' erfinden?
Wie sollt' ein Mensch wohl Dein Gericht ergründen?
Nur weg, Vernunft! nur weg, nur weg mit dir,
dein Witz der ist gar viel zu schlecht allhier.

5 Nur immer hin, nur hin mit deinem Tichten,
du kannst dich nicht in Gottes Weisheit richten;
wo Gott nicht selbst dich unterweisen wird,

daß Du ein Gott in drei Personen heiß'st;
