Der Heilge Geist vom Himmel kam

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn/choir piece, “Der heilig Geist vom Himmel kam” (Ludwig Helmbold, d. ), in ELGB #177, appearing in Geistliche Lieder (Erfurt, 1575) and titled “A Praise and Prayer Hymn for the Pentecost Feast.” According to Fischer, this “beautiful piece, in simplest treatment yet full of festive jubilation, is still highly regarded in Thuringia,” i.e., in the 1870s. It was included in à Burck’s Dreyssig Geistliche Lieder (Mühlhausen, 1594), Prätorius’ Musae Sioniae VI (1609), Preussische Fest Lieder II (Königsberg 1614) with setting by Eccard, etc.

THE Holy Ghost from heaven came
To those who hoped in Jesus’ name;
The room with noise was shaken.
God had not them forsaken.

Oh, what a blessed feast,

Was that Day of Pentecost!
May God e’en now impart
To every mouth and heart
That same Spirit blest!
Gloria, gloria, gloria!

2 Th’ Apostles’ tongues as fire became,
The Word would now go forth like flame,
The Spirit on them lighted,
His joy their hearts excited. Refrain.

3 In many tongues they preached and taught
And by God’s Spirit wonders wrought;
The Word His pow’r exerted,
To God a host converted. Refrain.

der Geist saß auf ihn allen,

viel Völker das Wort hörten,
