Geisterfüllte Freudenzeit

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Geisterfüllte Freudenzeit” (Johann M. Lange, d. 1756), in ELGB #178. I find it in Krauss’ Gsb 1708 the Altdorf Gsb 1718, among others. Here the melody “Aus den Tiefen rufe ich” is appointed. The Buffalo Synod hymnal designates “Jesu, komm doch selbst zu mir.” “Gott sei Dank” is another option here.

 

FEAST of gladness Spirit-filled,
By the Holy Spirit willed:
Comfort sweet by Joel foretold
We in Pentecost behold.

2 Now all flesh in all the world
Teems from heaven’s tent unfurled
With the Spirit through the Word
And Baptism’s grace conferred.

3 The disciples first did see
Here fulfilled Joel’s prophecy
When the Spirit’s gift of love
Fell upon them from above.

4 Tongues of fire did then appear
On their heads in manner clear
And inflamed the mouth of each,
Of the Savior Christ to preach.

5 In all tongues of men they spoke,
Which great wonder here awoke
For the Spirit, from this day
Would the truth to all convey.

6 By the Holy Spirit’s gift
In the wall was made a rift
Which the world did separate
From Judeah’s blest estate.

7 From the tongues of every race
Doth the Spirit gather praise
By His wisdom for the One
Who great things for us hath done.

8 Sons and daughters, young and old
By God’s Spirit are enrolled
In the ranks that prophesy
Of the Christian’s bliss on high.

9 Well is known the Christian’s wreath
Which the Spirit’s words bequeath;
Well is known the Christian’s joy
Hidden from the world’s annoy.

10 Well is known the Christian’s crown,
And the graces show’ring down.
They who for such things inquire
Have the prophecy entire.

11 Vanity, inconstancy,
Sin and shame and misery
Doth the Christian Spirit name
All the glories life may claim.

12 Peace and gladness his are yet
Who this world can soon forget
And be by the Spirit driv’n—
He keeps Pentecost in heav’n.

13 Well and wisely say we all
At the Spirit’s gracious call:
Our true Pentecost starts when
God shall bring us into heav’n.

Geisterfüllte Freudenzeit,
Joels Trost und Süßigkeit!
das der Geist vom Geist verheißt,
wird im Pfingstfest uns geleist.

2 Alles Fleisch in aller Welt,
wird erfüllt vom Himmelszelt,
mit dem Geist durchs Wort und Tauf,
in der letzten Zeiten Lauf.

3 An den Jüngern finge an,
was uns Joel kund gethan:
denn des Geistes Pfingstengab
fiele auf sie himmelab.

4 Feuerzungen zeigten sich
über ihnen sichtbarlich,
und erfüllten derer Mund,
die uns Christum machen kund.

5 Alle Sprachen redten sie,
welches so geschehen hie,
weil der Geist nach diesem Fest
aller Sprach sich überläßt.

6 Denn durch diese Geistesgab
wurd die Wand gebrochen ab,
so die Heiden hielt zurück
von der Jüden Geistesglück.

7 Alle Sprachen, aller Mund
rühmt nun durch des Geistesgrund
den, der nach des Geistes Rath,
große Wunder an uns that.

8 Sohn und Töchter, Jung und Alt,
hat durch Gottes Geist Gewalt,
weißzusagen in der Zeit,
von der Christen Seligkeit.

9 Künftig ist der Christen Ehr,
nach des Geistes höher Lehr:
künftig ist der Christen Lust,
die der Welt ist unbewußt.

10 Künftig ist der Christen Kron,
und des Himmels Gnadenlohn:
Wer nach diesen Dingen fragt,
hat auf künftig weißgesagt.

11 Eitelkeit und Unbestand,
Elend, Jammer, Sünd und Schand,
nennt der Geist der Christenheit,
dieses Lebens Herrlichkeit.

12 Aber Fried und Freude ist,
wo man dieser Welt vergißt,
und dem Geist sich zugesellt,
der im Himmel Pfingsten hält.

13 Wohl so sagen wir denn weis
auf des Geistes Gnadgeheiß:
Rechte Pfingsten wird erst sein,
wenn uns Gott führt himmelein.
