O heiliger Gott, allmächtiger Held

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn, “O heiliger Gott, allmächtiger Held (Anon., ? Johann Niedling, d. 1668), in ELGB #147, first appearing in Niedling’s Gsb 1655 without attribution, though possibly Niedling’s own, given his authorship of “O heiliger Geist, o heiliger Gott” in the same hymnal, which also uses the same meter. In Schamelius’s Lieder-Commentarius II (1725), the title is “The Risen Champion of Victory.” The appointed melody is “O Jesulein süß” /  “O heiliger Geist, o heiliger Gott.”

 

O HOLY Lord God, O Champion of might,
The world’s Salvation, Life, and Light!
Thou hast redeemed us by Thy blood
From fires of hell and Satan’s brood.
O holy Lord God, O Champion of might!

O holy Lord God, O Champion of might,
Thou Prince of Life hast conquered quite
And crushed the serpent’s rule and head,
In whose dread venom men lay dead.
O holy Lord God, O Champion of might!

O holy Lord God, O Champion of might,
Our Mercy-seat from heaven’s height!
Thou art the very Paschal Lamb
Slain for us the cross of shame.
O holy Lord God, O Champion of might!

O holy Lord God, O Champion of might
Our Ransom at the Father’s right!
Thou takest guilt and all distress,
And givest us Thy righteousness.
O holy Lord God, O Champion of might!

O holy Lord God, O Champion of might,
Help us to live to Thy delight,
And here from sleep of sin to rise
And there to enter paradise.
O holy Lord God, O Champion of might!

The world’s Relief and Comfort bright!
We praise Thee evermore, our Head,
For Thou art risen from the dead.
