O Angst und Leid

Here is my translation of the repentance hymn “O Angst und Leid” (Johann Franck, d. 1677), in ELGB #313, first published in Runge’s Gsb (Berlin, 1653). The title, of unknown origin: “Anxious lament of a contrite heart which feels and groans at the weight of its sins,” is given by Koch, and also included in Grabau’s hymnal. The appointed melody is “O Traurigkeit, o Herzeleid.” It is in some hymnals appointed for the feast of St. Mary Magdalene (e.g. Auserl. u. Vollst. Gsb., Saxony 1734, ed. Neumann).

O GRIEF and fear!
O sorrow drear!
What pain is my possession,
As my conscience gnaws at me
For all my transgression!

2 O horror dread!
In hunger spread
The jaws of hell before me,
Whither I have often run—
Now they would devour me!

3 Oh, woe is me!
O misery!
Where shall I flee to hide me?
Oh, if only some deep pit
Cov’ring could provide me!

4 In all earth’s bound
No haunt is found
Where I may dwell securely;
To th’ abyss my wickedness
Will compel me surely!

5 What sentence stern
I there shall learn
Before the throne of heaven,
Since by carnal passions I
Let myself be driven.

6 Thee, Christ, I greet,
My Mercy-seat,
Me in Thy wounds concealing,
For therein I ever have
Found true rest and healing.

7 Thy holy Blood
Shed for my good,
Upon the cross bright-glowing
Is a fount whence I receive
My salvation flowing.

8 O Savior, make
Me to partake
Of Thy dear satisfaction;
Bury henceforth in Thy tomb
Every grave infraction.

9 O Shepherd true!
If Satan too
Should cry of my wrongdoing,
Still him by Thy merits vast,
My faint hope renewing!

GERMAN
1 O Angst und Leid!
o Traurigkeit!
die ich jetzt muß empfinden,
die jetzt mein Gewissen nagt
wegen meine Sünden.

2 O Furcht und Graus!
das höllen-Haus!
darnach ich pflegt' zu ringen,
hat den Rachen aufgesperrt,
und will mich verschlingen.

3 O Ach und Weh!
o Schrecken-See!
wo soll ich mich verstecken?
Ach! daß doch die tiefe Gruft
möchte mich bedecken.

4 Der Erden Saum
hat keinen Raum,
d'rin ich kann sicher bleiben,
meine Bosheit will mich ganz
in dan Abgrund treiben.

5 Wie werd' ich dort
so strenge Wort'
für Gottes Rictstuhl hören;
weil ich mich die Fleisches Lust
lassen so bethören.

6 O Gottes-Sohn!
Du Gnaden-Thron!
ich flieh in Deine Wunden,
darin hab' ich jederzeit
Ruh und Lind'rung funden.

7 Dein heilig Blut,
das mir zu gut
am Creuze ward vergossen,
ist en Brunn, daraus das Heil
kommt auf mich geflossen.

8 Darum, mein Heil,
laß mich jetzt Theil
an Deinem Gnugthun haben,
meine Sünde wird hinfort
in Dein Grab begraben.

9 O treuer Hirt!
wann Satan wird
mein' Ueppigkeit verklagen,
so still' ihn durch Dein Verdienst,
sonst muß ich verzagen.

Dreieinigkeit! der Gottheit wahrer Spiegel

Here is my supplemental translation of the Trinity hymn, “Dreieinigkeit! der Gottheit wahrer Spiegel” (Johann Franck, d. 1677), in ELGB #201, based on Romans 11:33–36, earlier included in the author’s Teutsche Gedichte (Guben, 1674). The original in only 7 stanzas (the 8th is also by Franck, however), is found in Christoph Peters’ Andachts-Zymbeln (Freyberg/Meissen, 1655) with Peters’ own melody. Crüger has another melody (here given first).

O TRINITY, the Godhead’s true reflection!
O Light of Light, that, spread in each direction,
With might enfolds the world in shelt’ring wings,
And holds in being all created things!

2 We praise Thee when the sunlight first awaketh,
And when she late to sleep herself betaketh;
All things that live and move, by sea and land,
Forever ready at Thy service stand.

3 O boundless Treasure, unconfinèd Being!
What eye could e’er that mystery be seeing?
O Fountain deep, O Splendor unexplored!
How great, alas, how great Thy pow’r, O Lord!

4 What man can here, O Lord, Thy ways discover?
How shall a man Thy judgment fathom ever?
Begone, poor Reason! away, away with thee!
Too simple here is Thy sagacity.

5 Away with all Thy feeble sense and thinking;
Thou in God’s wisdom must at last be sinking;
Unless God shall to thee instruction give,
Thou shalt be lost and in stark error live.

6 Then teach us, Lord, to know without dividing
The Three in One, and One in Three abiding;
Oh, let us know Thee One in Persons three,
God Father, Son, and Spirit, perfectly.

7 Grant that this Word may sound among us ever:
"Glory to Him, the mighty God, our Savior,
By whom, through whom, in whom all beings are!"
Grant us to echo on this song afar!

8 Thy Name is great; Thy kingdom dwell within us,
Thy will compel us and with pow’r sustain us!
Spare us, redeem us in the evil hour,
For Thine’s the glory, Thine the rule, the pow’r.

WINKWORTH

True mirror of the Godhead! Perfect Light!
Thou Three in One, whose never-slumbering might
Enfolds the world within its sheltering wings,
And holds in being all created things!

2 We praise Thee with the earliest morning ray,
We praise Thee with the parting beam of day;
All things that live and move, by sea and land,
For ever ready at Thy service stand.

3 Exhaustless Treasure! Being limitless!
What gaze hath ever pierced Thy deep abyss?
Deep Fount of Life! Light inaccessible!
How great Thy power, O God, what tongue can tell?

7 Thy Christendom is singing night and day,
"Glory to Him, the mighty God, for aye,
By Whom, through Whom, in Whom all beings are!"
Grant us to echo on this song afar!

8 Thy Name is great, Thy kingdom in us dwell,
Thy will constrain and feed and guide us well;
Spare us, redeem us in the evil hour,
For Thine the glory, Thine the rule, the pow’r.

und wenn sie jetzt die späten Abend machet;
was lebt und webt auf dieser Erden weit,
ist alles, Herr, zu Deinem Dienst bereit.

3 O reicher Schatz! o unumschränktes Wesen!
Wer hat wohl je die Heimlichkeit gelesen?
O tiefer Brunn, o unerforschte Pracht!

du kannst dich nicht in Gottes Weisheit richten;
wo Gott nicht selbst dich unterweisen wird,
so bleibest du verloren und verirrt.

6 Drum lehr' uns, Herr, o lehr' uns ohne Trennen,
in Einem Drei, in dreien Eins erkennen;
ach! lehr' uns doch, Gott Vater, Sohn und Geist,
daß Du ein Gott in drei Personen heiß'st;

7 Gieb, daß von Dir dies Wort bei uns stets klinge:
"Von Ihm, durch Ihn, in Ihm sind alle Dinge."
Dem grossen Gott sei Ehr' in Ewigkeit;
ja, Amen, ja! singt alle Christenheit.

8 Dein Nam' ist groß; Dein Reich, Herr, in uns wohne;
Dein Will' uns zwing', ernähr uns, und verschone;
Versuchung steur', erlös' aus böser Zeit;
Dein ist das Reich, die Kraft und Herrlichkeit.

Brunnquell aller Güter

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Brunnquell aller Güter” (Johann Franck, d. 1677), in ELGB #175,  published in the author’s Teutsche Gedichte (Guben, 1674). The older form of the melody, says Fischer, from Runge’s Gsb 1653, is supposed to derive from the author himself. The melody in Crüger’s Praxis 1656 is a reworking of the older melody with the subscript “J. C. and Johann Franck.” In later editions Franck’s name was omitted. Later books sometimes allude to “Jesu meine Freude” (which is a line longer), e.g., “Almost to the tune, Jesu meine Freude.” I give the original melody from Zahn as well as Crüger’s, as seen, e.g., in Bach’s usage, BWV 445.

FOUNT of goods abiding,
Lord of hearts confiding,
Wind of Life Thou art;
Stiller of all sorrow,
Let me of Thee borrow
Fire to stoke my heart;
Teach this feeble harp to play Thee
Fitting praise, and honor pay Thee.

2 God’s almighty Finger,
Of strange tongues the Singer,
Heart’s Confirmer sweet,
Sorr’wing souls’ Consoler,
Flame of love’s rich color,
Breath of pow
’r complete:
Give me gifts of brightest burning
To love Thee with heartfelt yearning!

3 Bridegroom dear, behold me,
Let me sink and fold me
In Thy love’s abyss,
Rest and refuge finding
From the tempest blinding
Of this life’s distress!
Come, o Sun of grace, with kisses,
Comforts, and a thousand blisses!

4 Come, God’s Gift and Treasure,
Feed me with Thy pleasure;
Lo, I faint and fail!
Come, O my Desiring,
Come, my Love untiring,
For my heart doth smile
Quickened from its slumber lonely,
Seeing Thy refreshments solely.

5 As the deer goes panting,
For the water hunting,
Thirsty from the chase,
So my mind goes flying
In distress of dying,
To Thy boundless grace,
Sighing in its dryness ever,
Crying for Thy cooling river.

6 Thou, man’s true Creator,
Of our clay the Potter,
Everlasting God!
Of chaste love the Giver,
Help me practice ever,
E’en beneath the rod,
To leave all to Thy provision,
Calm, content with Thy decision.

7 Govern all my being,
Doing, hearing, seeing;
Guide me constantly,—
All my works turn rightly—
Yea, my song unsightly,
And poor poetry—
Thee far more than any other,
Let my deeds be pleasing, Father.

8 Let not hell’s great power
By some craft devour
Or cut short my days;
After present sadness,
High to heav’nly gladness
Thy poor servant raise!
Then my mouth will rightly bless Thee,
Alleluias will address Thee.

GERMAN
Brunnquell aller Güter,
Herrscher der Gemühter,
lebendiger Wind.
Stiller aller Schmerzen,
dessen Glanz und Kerzen,
nein Gemüth entzünd't;
lehre meine schwachen Saiten,
Deine Kraft und Lob ausbreiten.

2 Starker Gottes -Finger,
fremder Sprachen Bringer,
süßer Herzens-Saft!
Tröster der Betrübten,
Flamme der Verliebten,
alles Athems Kraft!
Gieb mir Deine Brunnst und Gaben,
Dich von Herzen lieb zu haben.

3 Bräutigam der Seelen,
laß mich in der Höhlen,
Deiner Lieblichkeit
Ruh und Zuflucht finden;
laß mich von den Winden
trüber Noth befreit!
Komm hervor, o Gnaden-Sonne,
kusse mich mit Trost und Wonne.

4 Theure Gottes-Gabe!
komm, o komm, mich labe,
sieh', ich bin verschmacht't:
komm, o mein Verlangen,
komm mein' Lieb' gegangen;
denn mein Herze lacht;
wird von neuem ganz erquicket,
wenn es Labsal, Dich erblicket.

5 Wie ein Hirschlein gehnet
sich nach Wasser sehnet,
wenn es wird gejagt;
so pfliegt mein Gemüthe,
Herr, nach Deiner Güte,
wemn es wird geplagt,
tief zu seufzen und im Dürren,
nach Dir, reichem Strom, zu girren.

6 Wahrer Menschen -Schöpfer,
unsers Thones Töpfer,
Gott von Ewigkeit!
Zunder keuscher Liebe,
gieb, daß ich mich übe,
auch im Creuz und Leid,
alles Dir anheim zu stellen,
und mich tröst' in allen Fällen.

7 Führe meine Sachen,
meinen Schlaf und Wachen,
meinen Tritt und Gang,
Glieder und Gesichte,
daß mein arm Gedichte,
daß mien schlecht Gesang,
Wandel, Werk und Stand für allen,
Dir, o Vater, mög gefallen.

8 Laß die Macht der Höllen
nicht mit Listen fällen
meiner Tage Lauf,
nimm nach diesem Leiden,
mich zur Himmels-Freuden,
Deinen Diener auf:
Da soll sich mein Mund erheben,
Dir ein Hallelujah geben.

Heut ist uns der Tag erschienen

Here is my translation of the Annunciation hymn, “Heut ist uns der Tag erschienen” (Johann Franck, d. ), in ELGB #89, appearing in the author’s Geistliches Sion (1674), though existing before 1652, since the first line appears as a title the 2. Chor der Vaterunser-Harfe (1652). The hymn was included in Praxis pietatis melica 1712 and other hymnals in the 18th c.: Halberstadt, Heilbronn, Eisleben, Quedlinburg, etc. The appointed melody is “Herr, ich habe mißgehandelt.”

NOW the Day to us appeareth
For which Adam yearned so long!
Now our great Redemption neareth,
Hope of all the faithful throng:—
Source of Abr’ham’s consolation,
Jacob’s joy and our salvation!

2 O the Day with gladness teeming!
Day that hath no like nor peer
Since the sun began with gleaming
To behold this earthly sphere!
Oh, the moment long desirèd!
Now the waiting-time’s expirèd!

3 Hail, beginning of our gladness!
Hail, thou welcome, blessed light,
Lands of heathen gloom and sadness
Greet thy dawn of comfort bright!
Long in darkest night we waited
Ere this day our hearts elated.

4 Lo, a holy rain from heaven
For our healing droppeth down;
From the skies a blessing’s given,
Righteousness, our glorious crown:
God the Son for our salvation,
Now begins His incarnation!

5 Heaven’s height is now embedded
In the deepest, lowliest vale,
Glory now with shame is wedded,
Pow’r divine befriends the frail!
To the poor the Prince descendeth,
Vengeance into mercy bendeth.

6 Virgin Mother, woman blessed,
Chastity’s unequaled rose!
God, who starry vaults possessèd
Yet thy womb unblemished chose
For His throne, and thou conceivest
Very God, whom thou believest.

7 Father here a child becometh;
Daughter, thou must mother be:
Yea, salvation sin assumeth,
Thou conceivest spotlessly,
Pregnant, virgin yet abiding—
Both by thy own Son’s providing!

8 Naught this myst’ry doth resemble,
To no mortal eye ’twas known!
At this sign of wonder tremble,
Which by God this day was done—
Such a wonder deep and splendid
By no mind was comprehended.

9 Father, Child in One united,
Our own Brother, flesh, and blood!
How canst Thou be e’er requited
For this great and mighty good?
Help our hearts, as we believe Thee,
That in spirit we receive Thee.

GERMAN
1 Heut ist uns der Tag erschienen,
worauf Adam schon so oft,
wie auch Jacob und sammt ihnen
aller Vater Schaar gehofft,
dran sich Abraham erquicket,
als er ihn im Geist erblicket.

2 O des Tages voller Wonne!
und dem sonst kein Tag nicht gleicht,
weil von Anbeginn die Sonne
hat um dieses Rund geleucht.
O der vielgewünschten Stunden,
die sich nunmehr eingefunden!

3 O Du Anfang unsrer Freuden!
sei gegrüßt, gewünschtes Licht!
als mit dem uns armen Heiden,
jetzt ein neuer Trost anbricht,
und vor welchem wir indessen
stets in lauter Nacht gesessen.

4 Nunmehr trieft ein heiles-Regen
oben durch den Himmel ab:
auch die Wolken schütten Segen
und Gerechtigkeit herab:
Gottes Sohn kömmt selbst auf Erden
und beginnt einMensch zu erden.

5 Nunmehr wird die höchste Höhe
mit dem tiefsten thal vereint.
Ehre nimmt die Schmach zur Ehe!
Allmacht wird der Schwachheit Freund!
Herrlichkeit kömmt zu uns Armen,
und aus Rache wird Erbarmen.

6 Jungfrau, Mutter, Keuschheit selber,
du gebenedeites Weib!
statt der hohen Sterngewölber
wird dein unbefleckter Leib
heut zu Gottes Thron erlesen,
du empfängst ein ew'ges Wesen.

7 Er, der Vater wird zu Kinde!
Tochter! du mußt Mutter sein:
selbst das Heil wird hier zu Sünde,
du empfängst, und bleibst doch rein.
Jungfrau bleiben, schwanger gehen,
kann allhie beisammen stehen.

8 O Geheimniß! dessen gleichen
man auf Erden nie gesehn:
dieses ist ein Wunder-Zeichen,
das von Gott heut ist geschehn,
welches kein vernünftig's Sinnen
kann begreife noch gewinnen.

9 Vater und doch Kind darneben,
unser Bruder, Fleisch und Blut,
ach! was können wir Dir geben
für dies allzugroße Gut!
Hilf, das wir mit Herz und Sinnen
geistlich Dich empfangen können.
