O treuer Gott ins Himmels Thron

Here is my translation of the catechetical/youth prayer hymn, “O treuer Gott ins Himmels Thron” (? Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), in ELGB #281, which according to Fischer appears with Helder’s melody in the Gotha Cantional II (1655), resembling his style, though not mentioned among Helder’s hymns in Wetzel, who cites a hymn with the same first line from Georg Oesterreicher’s Cantor-Büchlein (Rotenburg/Tauber, 1615). The melody in the Buffalo Synod hymnal is “Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst.”

O FAITHFUL God in heaven’s throne,
I pray Thee through Thy dearest Son
In judgment enter not with me,
For none can stand when judged by Thee.

2 Do not my many sins attend,
With which I often Thee offend;
Be mindful of Thy mercies great
Which never lessen nor abate.

3 Help me henceforth for all my days,
Guard me from sin and all disgrace,
A loving heart bestow on me
To serve my neighbor ceaselessly.

4 When life is o’er, take me at last
With soul and body, safe and fast
Within Thine hand; there let me lie,
And be an heir of heaven high.

GERMAN
O treuer Gott ins Himmels Thron,
ich bitte Dich durch Deinen Sohn,
geh' ja nicht ins Gericht mit mir,
denn kein mensch kann besteh'n vor Dir.

2 Mein' große Sünde sieh nicht an,
damit ich Dich erzürnet hat,
gedenk an Dein' Barmherzigkeit,
die nicht aufhört in Ewigkeit.

3 Hilf, daß ich forthin alle Stund,
mich hüt' für aller Schand' und Sünd',
gieb mir auch ein liebreiches Herz,
meinem Nächsten zu dienen stets.

4 Endlich nimm mich am letzten End',
mit Leib und Seel in Dein Händ',
und laß mich in Dir schlafen ein,
und Deines Reichs ein Erbe sein.

Send uns, Herr Christ, die Engel dein

Here is my translation of the Michaelmas hymn, “Send uns, Herr Christ, die Engel dein” (Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), in ELGB #237, appearing in the Gotha Cantional 1646 (1651), no. 112, with a four-voice setting by Helder. I include this setting as given in Schöberlein’s Schatz II, p. 835.

LORD Christ, to us Thine angels send,
That they may e’er Thy flock defend,
And most of all, at Thy command,
The evil one’s attacks withstand.

2 Against those ruses be our stay
Which devil, world, and flesh would play;
To us a mighty Fortress be
Against all force and tyranny.

3 What blessed fortune is their gain
Who such protection here obtain,
By Michael saved, that warlord dread,
Who trampled down the dragon’s head!

4 May He precede us in the fray,
That we may safely walk Thy way
Till with the angel’s company
We dwell in heav’n eternally.

GERMAN
Send uns, Herr Christ! die Engel Dein,
daß sie stets um Dein Häuflein sein,
nach Dein'm Befehl auch allermeist
Wacht halten widern bösen Geist.

2 Bewahre uns fürm Bösen Spiel,
so Teufl, Welt und Fleisch machen will,
sei uns ein starker Schutz dabei
widr all Gewalt und Tyrannei.

3 O glückselig sind alle die,
so diesen Schutz erlangen hie,
die der Großfürst Michael rett't,
der dem Drachen sein'n Kopf zertritt.

4 Der streit' für uns und geh' voran,
das wir treffen die rechte Bahn,
bis wir ewig den Engeln rein
im Himmel zugesellet sein.

Dein Trost, Herr Christe, pflanz du fort

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Dein Trost, Herr Christe, pflanz du fort” (asc. Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), in ELGB #176, from the Cantionale Sacrum 1646 (1651) with 4-voice setting by Helder, hence the ascription of the text to Helder. Wetzel, VI, p. 271, also ascribes it to Helder, noting that it was still present in the Gotha Gsb 1702, but also that B. Helder was known to have published under his name some hymns of his father, Johann Helder. I give the setting from the Gotha Cantionale, but also Zahn’s melody, which notes that the C in the first line does not agree with the harmony, and suggests an alternate Bb. The Buffalo Synod hymnal, however, suggests “Wenn wir in höchsten Nöthen sein.”

THY comfort spread--, O Christ our Lord!
Who hears and keeps--- Thy Holy Word
Shall, justified--, salvation gain,
And come not into hellish pain.

2 This cannot be by man begun,
But by the Holy Ghost is done;
Oh, deign to give Him graciously
To all that have true love for Thee.

3 So, Lord, we ask of all things most:
Give us this Love and Holy Ghost,
With heav’nly joy our soul to fill,
And lead us ever in Thy will.

4 That we, thus strengthened in Thy Light,
Turn not aside to left or right,
But in the true faith heav’nward come
To Thee, and dwell within Thy home.

GERMAN
Deinn Trost Herr Christe, pflanz Du fort
wer hört und hält Dein göttlich Wort,
der soll gerecht und selig sein,
und nicht kommen in höllisch Pein.

2 Dies aber kann geschehn nicht,
wenns nicht der heilig Geist verricht,
denselben aber wollst Du gebn,
allen die herzlich Dich thun liebn.

3 Drum bitten wir, Herr, allermeist,
gieb uns solch Lieb und heilgen Geist,
der uns erfüll mit seiner Freud,
und stets nach Gottes Willen leit.

4 Daß wir gestärkt in Deinem Licht,
vom rechten Glauben weichen nicht,
sondern zu Dir im Himmel Dein,
in Deine Wohnung treten ein.

Der Engel zu Maria kömmt

Here is my translation of the Annunciation hymn, “Der Engel zu Maria kömmt” (Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), in ELGB #85, on Luke 1:26–38, first appearing in the Gotha Cantional 1646 (1651), from which it was included in the Buffalo Synod hymnal. The appointed melody is not given, suggesting the original cantional melody was used, while Fischer indicates “Vom Himmel hoch.”

TO Mary comes the Angel bright,
And brings her tidings of delight:
She shall conceive a Child and bear
Christ Jesus, God and heaven’s Heir.

2 In wonder Mary hears the word,
Told by the Angel from the Lord:
This shall the Holy Ghost in her
Perform in manner new and pure.

3 Lord Jesus Christ, who for our good
Didst take on Thee our flesh and blood,
Grant us partakers here to be
Of such great benefits from Thee.

4 Save us from sin and death and hell,
Before us every danger quell,
Help us by Thy humanity,
That we may ever live with Thee.

erhalt' uns fest in aller Noth:
Hilf durch die zarte Menschheit Dein,
daß wir mög'n ewig bei Dir sein.

O trautes, liebes Jesulein

Here is my translation of the New Year hymn “O trautes, liebes Jesulein” (Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), in ELGB #59, early appearing in the Gotha Cantional from 1646 (1651) with setting for four voices. Since the Buffalo hymnal has no melody indication, it may be assumed that cantional music was used. Fischer indicates the melody “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her.”

WE greet Thee, dearest Jesus, now,
O God and Man, our Brother Thou!
Thy love and faithfulness it was
That brought Thee down from heav’n to us.

2 Thou takest on our flesh and blood
Yet without sin, for all our good;
Thou com’st a poor Man and oppressed,
That we may be rich men and blest.

3 Teach us Thy benefits to love
Which Thou hast brought from heav’n above;
Our body let Thy manger be,
Our heart, a chamber fit for Thee.

4 Help us in need, the foe restrain,
And save us from the world’s disdain,
Till safe with Thee in heav’nly joy,
No evils more may us annoy.

Translation © 2023 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN
O trautes, liebes Jesulein!
o Gott und Mensch! o Brüderlein!
das Du vom Himmel kommen bist,
Dein Lieb' und Treu' die Ursach ist.

2 Nimmst an Dich unser Fleisch und Blut,
doch ohne Sünd', uns all'n zu Gut,
kommst zu uns arm und elend ein,
auf daß wir reich und selig sein.

3 Lehr' uns Dein Wohlthat hab'n in Acht,

Here is my translation of the Jesus/Redeemer (also Christmas?) hymn “Das Jesulein soll doch mein Trost” (Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), ELGB #29, earlier found in Cantionale Sacrum (Gotha, 1646), though necessarily existing before 1635 when Helder died. Fischer notes that it is not widespread. The original melody is appointed in the Buffalo Synod hymnal. Bach (or perhaps Krebs) is known to have written a chorale prelude (BWV 702) on the melody. In researching the melody I also discovered Terry’s translation, which does not rhyme lines 6 and 8 of each stanza, which I include below.

MY Jesus shall my comfort be,
My Savior, now and ever,
Who loveth and redeemeth me;
No might our bond shall sever:
With all my will I hold Him still,
In faith on Him relying,
Whate’er I feel, both woe and weal,
In living and in dying.

2 With my dear Jesus I will stand;
My heart in Him remaineth.
Let grief and pain on every hand
Arise as God ordaineth.
Though devil, death, and sin in wrath
To do their worst endeavor,
With Jesus here, my Savior dear,
I am delivered ever.

3 With my dear Jesus next to me,
I’ll stand in judgment surely,
Defying every enemy;
My soul shall dwell securely
And enter in to life with Him
And see with greatest pleasure
The Savior fair, whom here I share
Now by faith’s precious treasure.

Translation © 2023 Matthew Carver.

C. S. TERRY
1 In Jesus is my only joy,
My soul He doth deliver;
He loveth me without alloy,
From Him naught me shall sever.
With deepest love I gaze above
And yield myself unto Him.
In joy or woe His path I go,
In living or in dying.

2 With Thee, sweet Jesus, at my side
Nought can on earth distress me;
E’en though I wade through troubles’ tide,
Thy love will hold and bless me.
The Devil’s wiles, earth’s flatt’ring smiles,
Shall not prevail against me;
In Jesus I my bourne descry:
On Him I soon shall rest me.

3 The day will dawn, O Jesus mine,
When my dread God will face me,
When freed I’ll be from foes malign,
And Thou wilt stoop to embrace me.
Then I shall be ever with Thee,
And with Thee throned in glory,
O Savior dear, who far and near
Art hymned in deathless story.

GERMAN
Das Jesulein soll doch mein Trost,
mein Heiland sein und bleiben,
der mich geliebet und erlöst,
kein G'walt soll mich abtreiben:
Ihm thu ich mich ganz williglich
von Herzens Grund ergeben,
es mag mir sein weh oder fein,
mag sterben oder leben.

2 Mit meinem lieben Jesulein
will ich gar wohl bestehen,
wenn ich mitten durch Noth und Pein
nach Gottes Willn soll gehen.
Was will mir dann wohl haben an

Here is my translation of the Advent hymn, “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, und hast als ein König gerecht” (asc. Bartholomäus Helder, d.), in ELGB #19, originally in the Gotha Cantional (from at least 1646ff.) with title “for four voices, by Helder,” indicating only the melody, though in Wetzel and in the Coburg Gsb 1655, Helder is also given as author; so in later hymnals. It is to be distinguished from Martin Behm’s 14-stanza Advent hymn “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, und dich zum Menschen hast gewandt,” etc. The Buffalo Synod hymnal also ascribes it to “Barthold [sic] Helder, 1635.” But it assigns no melody. Fischer indicates “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir.” I include also the original 4-voice setting by Helder.

WE thank Thee, Jesus, dearest Friend,
That Thou from heaven didst descend,
And as our King didst righteously
Redeem and save humanity.

2 To Salem’s gates we see Thee pass,
All meek and mild upon an ass;
The people all Hosanna sing,
And praise their God, the highest King.

3 So from us, Lord, do not depart,
But enter into every heart,
Nor let the devil, death, and sin
O’er us the slightest mast’ry win.

4 So we with songs of loud acclaim
Will everywhere extol Thy name,
Till to Jerusalem on high
To Thee and all Thy host we fly.

Translation © 2023 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN
Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ,
Daß du vom Himmel kommen bist,
Und hast als ein König gerecht
Erlöst das ganze menschlich Gschlecht;

2. Und zu Jerusalem zeuchst ein
Sanftmütig auf ein Eselein,
Das Volk singt Hosianna schon
Und Ehr sei Gott im höchsten Thron.

3. Also wollst, Herr, auch bei uns sein,
In unsre Herzen ziehen ein,
Daß uns der Teufel, Tod und Sünd,
Mit seiner Macht nicht überwind.

4. So wollen wir mit großem Schall
Dein Namen rühmen überall,
Bis wir in Himmel gehen ein
Zu dir und deinen Engelein.

O heiliger Geist, o heiliger Gott

Here is my superfluous (e.g., John C. Mattes’ “O Spirit of life, O Spirit of God”) translation of the Pentecost hymn or prayer to the Holy Spirit, “O heiliger Geist, o heiliger Gott” (J. Niedling, 1655?), a composition evidently inspired by the melody of the Christmas hymn, “O Jesulein süß, o Jesulein mild.” According to Fischer, it first appears in Johann Niedling’s Lutherisch Hand-Büchlein (Altenburg, 1655) without ascription and following two Pentecost hymns of Niedling; thus he conjectures Niedling’s authorship. Gottschald, in his Lieder-Remarquen (Leipzig, 1738) ascribes it to Bartholomäus Helder, clearly confusing it with Helder’s “O heiliger Geist, ewiger Gott” (which Crull translates as “O Holy Ghost, Eternal God”). Our text is taken from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #227, where it is also wrongly ascribed to Helder.

O SPIRIT of God! O Spirit most pure!
In every need true Comforter!
Thou art sent forth from heaven’s throne
From God the Father and the Son.
O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!

2 O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!
Love for Thy Word may we procure!
Within us stoke love’s flame, that we
May love all men accordingly.
O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!

3 O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!
Our faith increase and make secure!
For none in Jesus Christ believe,
Unless Thy succor they receive.
O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!

4 O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!
By Holy Writ our blindness cure,
Enlight’n our eyes, that every one
May know the Father and the Son.
O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!

5 O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!
Thou show’st the Door to heaven sure;
Let us contend here valiantly,
And blessedly press on to Thee.
O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!

6 O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!
In grief and death Thy grace assure,
We give Thee honor, thanks, and praise
Both now and throughout all our days.
O Spirit of God! O Spirit most pure!

Dich bitt ich, Heiland aller Welt

Here is my translation of the revised form of the Christmas & Epiphany hymn “Dich bitt ich, trautes Jesulein” (Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635) beginning “Dich bitt ich, Heiland aller Welt,” included in Ev.-Luth. Gesganbuch in this altered form. The revised form appears to date from at least 1784, based on its attestation in a Choral-Buch of that year. In previous years, the Lunenburg hymnal had the original form with “trautes Jesulein”; the revised form replaces this in later editions of that hymnal, esp. in the 19th c. The intent, evidently, is to make the hymn relate to the increasingly emphasized idea of Presentation of Jesus over Purification of Mary, just as it is categorized in the Pennsylvania and Wisconsin hymnals. The appointed melody is “Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her.” I include for comparison the original German and its translation by August Crull, of which I am able to preserve little more than a line.

THOU Savior of the world who art,
Be Thou presented to my heart,
That I may find such joy in Thee
As God in Thee prepared for me.

2 Thou art my Savior, Christ, bestowed
Upon me by the Lord my God;
O cleanse my senses, heart, and mind,
And make me just, to good inclined.

3 Show me the way, O glorious Light,
That I miss not Thy heav’nly height.
Thou art alone my Prize and Crown,
And I, Thy servant and Thine own.

4 Let not Thy peace, Lord, me forsake,
From Thee let me my eye ne’er take
Then from this world most cheerfully
I’ll go whene’er it pleaseth Thee.

Translation © 2022 Matthew Carver.

 ENGLISH (ORIGINAL)

O dearest Jesus, Thee I pray:
Within my heart now make Thy stay,
That I, like Simeon of old,
By faith may gladly Thee infold.

2 Thou art my Life and Happiness,
Whom God hath sent, my soul to bless:
O cleanse and purify my heart,
That from Thy paths I ne'er depart.

3 Lord, with Thy light show me the way,
That never I may go astray;
Ward off all sorrow and despair,
And let me be Thine own fore'er.

4 Lift up Thy face upon me, Lord,
In life and death Thy help afford;
Then I'll depart most cheerfully
This life, whene'er it pleaseth Thee.

Tr. A. Crull.

GERMAN (REVISED)

Dich bitt ich, Heiland aller Welt!
Sei meinem Herzen dargestellt,
daß ich an dir hab solche Freud,
als mir von Gott in dir bereit.

2 Weil du mein Heil und Christus bist,
der mir von Gott gegeben ist,
so reinige Herz, Sinn und Muth,
und mache mich gerecht und gut.

3 Zeig mir die Bahn, o helles Licht!
daß ich des Himmels fehle nicht.
Du bist allein mein Preis und Ruhm,
und ich dein Knecht und Eigenthum.

4 Dein Friede, Herr! verlaß mich nicht,
mein Auge sei auf dich gericht;
so will ich gern aus dieser Welt
hinfahren, wenn es dir gefällt.

GERMAN (ORIGINAL)

Dich bitt ich, trautes Jesulein!
Komm zu mir in das Herze mein,
Daß ich an dir hab Lust und Freud,
Wie Simeon im Tempel heut.

2. Denn du mein Heil und Leben bist,
So mir von Gott gegeben ist,
Reinge mein Herz, läutre mein Muth,
Erhalt mich auf dein Wegen gut.

3. Zeig mir die Bahn mit deinem Licht,
Daß ich ja fehl des Himmels nicht,
Wend ab von mir all Straf und Pein,
Und laß mich gar dein eigen sein.

4. Dein Antlitz sei auf mich gericht,
Im Lebn und Tod verlaß mich nicht,
So will ich gern aus dieser Welt
Zu dir wandern, wenn dirs gefällt.

Gleichwie ein Hirschlein mit Begierd

Here is my translation of the praise hymn, “Gleichwie ein Hirschlein mit Begierd” (Bartholomäus Helder, d. 1635), based on Psalm XLII (Sicut cervus), as it appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch (Wisc. Synod) #82. The appointed melody is “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her,” but Layriz indicates the “proper melody” from the Gotha Cantional II (1648), p. 286, and may have been written by Helder, which I therefore also include here from Zahn.

AS pants the hart with great desire
For water-brooks reviving,
When in the chase he starts to tire,
Through hills and byways striving,
So also doth my soul in me
Both thirst and groan, Lord God, for Thee,
With deep and heartfelt longing.

2 O Lord my God and Confidence,
When wilt Thou grant me ever
To look upon Thy countenance
So full of grace and favor?
Behold my grief and misery,
Defend me from the enemy,
From shame my soul deliver!

3 Both day and night I weep at heart
While proudly foes  aggrieve me,
But God again will joy impart,
And nevermore will leave me
So with His flock to church I'll go
And praises on His name bestow:
This is my highest gladness.

4 Why art thou cast down, O my soul?
Or what can discontent thee?
Hope thou in God, His name extol;
Thou need’st not thus torment thee.
God will assist thee graciously
This shalt thou witness visibly.
I’ll praise my God forever.

GERMAN
Gleichwie ein Hirschlein mit Begierd
schreiet nach frischem Wasser,
wenn's hin und her gejaget wird
durch wüste Berg und Straßen:
also auch meine Seel in mir
dürstet und schreit, Herr Gott nach dir,
mit sehnlichem Verlangen.

2 Ach, Herr mein Gott und Zuversicht,
wann wird's einmal geschehen,
daß ich dein gnädig Angesicht
mög schauen und ansehen?
Sieh an mein Elend, Angst und Noth,
laß mich nicht sein der Feinde Spott;
Errette meine Seele.

3 Der Feinde Trotzen kränket mich
zu Tag und Nacht im Herzen;
Gott wird mich aber lassen nicht,
mich wiederum ergötzen.
Ich will in seiner Kirch und Gmein
hingehn und lobn den Namen sein:
das ist mein höchste Freude.

4 Was magst du denn betrUuuben dich,
mein allerliebste Seele?
Trau Gott, dem herren inniglich;
was darfst du dich selbst quälen?
Er wird dir helfen gnädiglich,
du wirst's erfinden sichtbarlich:
ich werd ihm ewig danken.
