Wie reichlich wird dort dem belohnt

Here is my translation of the heaven/eternal life hymn, “Wie reichlich wird dort dem belohnt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #150 with melody assignment “Wie schön leucht uns der Morgenstern.” Its theme more particularly is the various heavenly rewards received by Christians for their good works, or as one source puts it, “degrees of glory corresponding to differences of work and fidelity here on earth, producing praise to God but no envy (see 2 Cor. 9:6; Matt. 20:23).” It is an exhortatio positiva forming a counterpart to the negativa in Henkel’s previous hymn on the Final Judgment. The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) adapts it in 9 stanzas of Long Meter as “Exceeding Greet Is the Reward.”

 

WHAT rich rewards will He possess
Who seeketh here for godliness,
A Christian life pursuing;—
Who strove and struggled morn and eve
Till he was given to perceive
How toilsome is the doing:
How sour,
How dour
The endeavor,
Striving ever,
Till victorious,
We o’ercome the toils inglorious.

2 Who thus the course doth finish well
Is freed from suff’ring, sin, and hell
And knoweth only blessing.
For in the suff’rings of this age
He is prepared that heritage
To take for his possessing.

What great things await him yonder.

3 Then only will it plain appear
In truth, what Jesus’ life was here
How in His saints He liveth.

The faithful man shall rise again

Wie reichlich wird dort den belohnt,
der sich stets hier nach Tugend sehnt,
und sucht sie zu verwalten;
der kämpfet, streitet früh und spat,
bis er es recht erfahren hat,
daß es kaum auszuhalten:
wie sehr,
wie schwer
alles Leiden
durch zu streiten,
daß sich findet
bis man alles überwindet.

2 Wohl dem der so den Lauf vollendt,
der findt vom Leiden dann ein End;
er wird auch überwinden;
dann in dem Leiden dieser Zeit
wird er für jene Welt bereit;
der wird auch glücklich finden:
Was er
vorher
nicht konnt sehen
noch verstehen
hier im Leben,
wird ihm dort im Himmel geben.

3 Nur dort wird es recht offenbar,
was hier das Leben Jesu war,
wie er lebt in den Frommen:
