Wer sollt nicht Lust haben zu sein

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer sollt nicht Lust haben zu sein” (L. Helmbold, 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XIII, with title: “Of the blessed time of the New Testament (or new covenant).”

Mel.: Christ, der du bist der helle Tag.

WHAT Christian would not eagerly

Within God’s church a prophet be

Or in the king’s vocation reign

O’er all his subjects and domain?

2 Indeed, he thinks, whose mind is sound,

No better than these two is found,

And saith: O what a people blest

Lived at that time in joy and rest!

3 Yea, most of all in Israël:

How wise was ancient Samuel;

How mighty David on his throne;

How wondrously God graced His own!

4 But wherein are we worse today?

If we believe what Christ doth say,

We better live than they of old.

Oh, but our blessedness behold!

5 We have the sweet New Testament

Of Christ, from heav’n to earth who went,

Was born true Man in Bethl’hem here,

Whose angel bids us have no fear.

6 For tidings of great joy he brings,

And sweetly still the anthem rings

Of heav’nly spirits, angels, powers:

To God be glory, peace is ours!

7 The Holy Ghost doth earthward fly,

The Father’s voice doth testify,

Commanding all to hear His Son,

That peace may come to everyone.

8 The Spirit, sent, inflames the band,

Their line goes out to every land,

To herald Christ to hearts depraved:

He who believes is just and saved.

9 We baptized are as He decreed,

From sin, death, hell, and devil freed,

His Body_and Blood our food and drink:

And blest are they who this bethink!

10 In truth, they would not ask instead

The prophet’s mantle o’er them spread,

Nor kingly crown and majesty.

’Tis more, a Christian man to be.

11 God, help, my heart is far too slight,

And knows now how to grasp aright

This Word of blessedness from Thee.

Lord, strengthen me eternally. Amen.

GERMAN

Wer sollt nicht Lust haben zu sein

ein Prophet in Gottes Gemein?

Oder in königlichem Stand

wohl herrschen über Leut und Land?

2 Wahrlich wer recht bei Sinnen ist

hält beides für das allerbest,

und denkt, o welch selige Leut

sind doch gewest zu jener Zeit.

3 Besondern im Volk Israel,

wie weise war doch Samuel?

Wie stark der David in seim Reich?

Der Herr begabt sie wunderlich.

4 Aber was mangelt uns jetzund?

Wenn wir glauben des Herren Mund,

o leben wir zur bessern Zeit

denn sie: Bedenk die Seligkeit.

5 Das neue Testament wir han

von Christo, wie derselber kam,

Gott Mensch geborn zu Bethlehem,

hieß uns ohn Furcht der Engel sein.

6 Ja große Freud verkünidget,

es laut noch wohl das alte Lied

der ganze himmelischen Schar,

Ehr sei Gott, Fried uns immerdar.

7 Der Heilig Geist heraber fleugt,

des Vaters Stimm den Sohn bezeugt,

heißt uns ihm alle hören zu,

kein Seel soll bleiben ohne Ruh.

8 Der Heilig Geist ist drum gesandt,

die Jünger gehn in alle Land,

und predigen von Jesu Christ;

Herr, stärke mich in Ewigkeit. Amen.

Gott Vater, der du deiner Schar

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Gott Vater, der du deiner Schar” (B. Ringwaldt, 1682), from the author’s Evangelia, the prayer-hymn for Trinity VII.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

O GOD the Father, who hast sworn

Here to Thy congregation

That, when our crosses must be borne,

Thou shalt give consolation,

And with it also daily bread,

Help, and defense in time of dread,

Because of Thy great mercy.

2  Grant us pure air, the sunshine warm,

Good dew, and rain abounding,

That fruit may prosper without harm,

Thy blessing all surrounding

All that the laborer hath cast

Upon Thy Word on earth so vast

From morning-tide till evening.

3 Without Thee all his strength and skill,

Sweat, toiling, and endeavor

Are vain, unless to plow and till

Thou grant Thy gracious favor

And wake the seed upon the plain,

That in its course it may attain

To ripeness and great increase.

4 Lord, in Thy wrath rebuke us not,

To mercy be attending,

From fire and frost, from blight and rot

The precious grain defending,

From hail and storm and heavy flood

And all that to a harvest good

Would harmful be, and hinder.

5 Preserve us, Lord, from perils all,

Our sins forgive and pardon,

Let rain be not too great nor small,

The soil to drown or harden.

Nor kindle fire by lightning-blast,

That by Thy blessing we at last

May fill both barn and barrel.

6 Grant graciously what now Thy hand

For us intends to flourish,

And all the creatures in the land

Thereby sustain and nourish,

Then shall to Thee both great and small,

And old and young among us all

Give fitting adoration.

7 Thou highest Good, we trust in Thee!

Thy grace still richly send us.

Our wants Thou knowest certainly,

And long hast well sustained us,

And still wilt keep and rule us so,

That we Thy blessing well may know,

And to Thy name give glory.

Amen.

GERMAN

Gott Vater, der du deiner Schar

hast zugesagt auf Erden,

daß sie von dir soll immerdar

im Kreuz getröstet werden,

darneben auch das täglich Brot

samt Schutz und Rettung in der Noth

genädig überkommen:

2 Gib reine Luft, warm Sonnenschein,

gedenk an deine Güte,

den Weinstock und das liebe Korn

vor hartem Frost behüte,

so wohl vor Hagel, Sturm und Fluth,

vor Mülthau und was schaden thut

den Früchten in gemeine.

5 Vor großer Dürrheit uns bewahr,

vergib uns unser Sünde,

auf daß nicht etwa mit Gefahr

das Wetter was entzünde,

halt auch das Erdreich nicht zu naß,

auf daß wir mögen Scheun und Faß

durch deinen Segen füllen.

6 Gib gnädig, was uns deine Hand

jetzt thut gar lieblich weisen,

und thu darmit im ganzen Land

die Kreaturen speisen,

so wird dich loben groß und klein

die alten und die Kinderlein,

und was auf Erden lebet.

7 Wir trauen dir, du höchstes Gut,

dein Gnad die mag es walten,

du weißt wohl was uns mangeln thut,

hast lang Zeit hausgehalten,

und wirst noch ferner so regiern,

daß man wird deinen Segen spürn

und deinen Namen preisen. Amen.

Willkommen, Gottes reicher Segen

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Willkommen, Gottes reicher Segen” (B. Schmolck, 1715), from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, second series, for Trinity V.

Mel.: Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.

BE welcome, God’s abundant blessing,

Which Jesus’ goodness tenderly

Would pour in twofold streams unceasing,

Upon His own, that they may see

How He in blessings doth abound,

And none His equal may be found!

2 Oh, what a blessed taste of favor

My mind and spirit then perceive,

When Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior,

Doth fullness of His blessing give

In Spirit-things, the heart to fill,

Which from the heav’nly fountain spill!

3 Thou wilt not of Thy free conviction

Adorn us, Thy believers true

With such a heav’nly benediction,

But we must do our labor due,

And what the Savior preacheth, hear,

Which draws us to that blessing dear.

4 The fount of blessings Thou abidest,

O Holy, Blessed Trinity,

Who art from heav’n, where Thou residest

Prepared to bless us mightily,

But that art Thou, O Jesus, most—

’Tis Thou who with this blessing flow’st.

5 Thou dost the gifts of Thy good Spirit

Pour in the hollow of our heart,

Whence life and comfort we inherit—

Of heaven’s blessings have a part.

By Thee in peace our soul shall live,

And all its sin Thou dost forgive.

6 With righteousnes our head Thou crownest,

Thou giv’st us grace without alloy;

In Baptism, when our sin Thou drownest,

The Holy Spirit’s peace and joy

And faith and charity from Thee

Shall our abundant blessing be.

7  But even more than all such blessing

In things of Spirit giv’n by Thee,

Thou also wilt have us possessing

The benediction bodily,

That body_and soul together may

Be rich in blessings day by day.

8 Let me the net of my vocation

Let down upon Thy Word and will,

And hope find Thee its sure foundation,

So that Thy blessing too may fill

My house, like Peter’s nets and ships,

And all my nakedness eclipse.

9 For Thou, O Lord, wilt think upon me,

And such a mighty quantity

Of all provisions let o’errun me,

With which I may continually

My living earn, and not forgo

Thy blessings that should else o’erflow.

10 But let me, with his blessing, ever

Recall my duty and my debt

Which therefore lies on me, and never

Put out of mind, nor once forget

How all my days I should proclaim

My heartfelt thanks unto Thy name.

11 So let me till my life is ending

Use well Thy gifts, O bounteous God,

E’er to my neighbor’s good attending,

That men the more may give Thee laud,

And for Thy blessings never cease

Thy praise and glory to increase.

12 At last let me to Thee be cleaving,

When death shall put my ship to sea,

That, glad at heart, I may be leaving

What here Thy blessing granted me,

And joyful, follow Thee at last,

Lord Jesus, to the Lamb’s repast.

GERMAN

Willkommen, Gottes reicher Segen,

den meines Jesu Gütigkeit

will auf die Seinen zwiefach legen,

damit man seh zu jeder Zeit,

wie Jeuss sei an Segen reich,

und ihm darinnen niemand gleich.

2 O was empfindet mein Gemüthe

vor einen seligen Genuß,

wenn mein Herr Jesu deine Güte

mir mit des Segens Überfluß

im geistlichen das Herz erf¨¨llt,

der aus der HImmelsquelle quillt.

3 Zwar wirst du nicht von freien Stücken

uns deine wahren Gläubigen

mit solchem Himmelssegen schmücken,

durch Hören deiner Predigen,

die uns zu solchem Segen ziehn,

muß man sich um denselben mühn.

4 Du bist und bleibst die Segenquelle,

o heilige Dreifaltigkeit,

die du von deiner hohen Stelle

zu segnen immer bist bereit,

besonders bist sie Jesu du,

von dir fließt dieser Segen zu.

5 Du schüttest deines Geistes Gaben

in unsers Herzens armes Haus,

uns zur Erquickung und zum Laben

als deinen Himmels Segen aus,

du giebst die wahre Seelenruh,

was Sünde heißt vergiebest du.

6 Du krönest uns mit lauter Gnade,

du schenkst uns die Gerechtigkeit,

bald bei der Taufe Gnadenbade

des heilgen Geistes Fried und Freud,

auch Glauben und der Lieb Erfreun

soll uns dein reicher Segen sein.

7 Noch über allen diesen Segen,

den du uns giebst im Geistlichen,

suchst du uns reichlich beizulegen

den Segen in dem Leiblichen,

damit so Seel als Leib zugleich

nur sei von deinem Segen reich.

8 Gieb, daß ich des Berufes Netze

werf auf dein Wort und Namen aus,

und auf dich meine Hoffnung setze,

damit dein Segen mir men Haus,

wie Petri Netz und Schiffe, füllt,

und allen meinen Mangel stillt.

9 Denn du, Herr, wirst an mich gedenken,

und deinen großen Vorrath mir

von allen Nahrungsmitteln schenken,

damit mir immer für und für,

zum Lebensunterhalte, nicht

dein Segensüberfluß gebricht.

10 Laß aber auch bei solchem Segen

mich meine Schuldigkeit und Pflicht,

so mir oblieget, wohli erwägen,

und daß ich ja vergesse nicht,

wie ich davor mein Lebenlang

soll sagen deinem Namen Dank.

11 Daß ich bis an mein letztes Ende

das, was du reicher Gott beschert,

zu meines Nächsten Nutz anwende,

und auch von dir unabgekehrt,

mit selbern deines Namens Ehr

ausbreite, rühme, und vermehr.

12 Laß diesen Schluß mich endlich fassen;

führt mir der Tod mein Schiff ausland,

daß ich mag Freudenvoll verlassen,

was mir dein Segen zugewandt,

und dir zum Lammes Hochzeitstag,

Herr Jesu, fröhlich folgen mag.
