O König aller Frommen

Here is my translation of the Epiphany hymn, “O König aller Frommen” (Anon., after M. Behm, d. 1622), in NEGB #27 for the Feast of the Epiphany (Gospel Matt. 2:1–2; Lesson Isa. 60:1–6) with melody assignment “Herzlich thut mich verlangen.” This hymn evidently originated as a reworking of Behm’s well-known hymn, “O König aller Ehren” (Winkworth: “O Jesus, King of Glory”). but begins to chart its own distinct path by the 4th stanzas, bringing in more theological references to Jesus’ priesthood and kingship. Fischer has no entry. The text appears without author (might it be another product of Diterich or Cramer?) in the Allgemeines Gsb (1780), #233, and the Neues Gsb für die ev. Gemeine zu Regensburg (1783, 2nd. ed. 1786), #74, p. 77f., with the same wording and melody assignment as NEGB. Appearing as early in Fröhlich’s Sammlung (1783), #150, it is there assigned “Wie soll ich dich empfangen.” It is also included in Lübeck 1784, Wittenberg 1792 (for “High New Year” i.e., Epiphany), Sachsen-Coburg-Meiningen 1794, etc.

O KING of all the holy,
O Jesus, David’s Son!
Thou cam’st to sinners lowly,
In heaven was Thy throne;
Yet is Thy will, O Savior,
That earth should hallowed be
Thy sacred kingdom ever,
A realm of sanctity.

2 West by Thy star’s bright glory
Thy witnesses are drawn;
They bend their knees before Thee
Their Lord and God, the Son;
All that they have, they offer,
Poor-seeming as Thou art;
With joy their gifts they proffer:
Their faithful, trusting heart.

3 The firstfruits of the nations,
With joy God’s words attend;
The Child-king’s tribulations
Do not their hearts offend.
Oh, sinners, take ye neither
Offense at His disgrace;
From heaven He hither
To die for Adam’s race.

4 When death at last He suffers,
(So wills His Father wise)
And for all people offers
Th’ atoning sacrifice,
The Lord the Son addressing,
Will say, Rule Thou with Me,
My throne and might possessing;
Let earth bow down to Thee.

5 The Lord shall make His plunder
With mighty men and great;
Though kings may rage and thunder,
His is the kingdom yet!
He rules, since He, once suff’ring
In place of all mankind,
Gave up His life, an off’ring
And perfect pray’rs consigned.

6 From sea to sea He reigneth,
And thousands ready fly
To serve as He ordaineth,
His name to magnify;
Rejoice, ye Gentile nations,
Ye to His kingdom called
To share its jubilations
By blessedness enthralled.

7 Lo, on the throne of heaven
He reigns! Praise and laud!
Let Him be fealty given
By all the sons of God.
Are truth and grace and favor
His kingdom’s policy,
What then can harm thee ever?
Take heart! He cares for Thee.

8 O Jesus, we adore Thee,
To Thee we gladly give
Our life, an off’ring for Thee;
This service due receive!
We heathen are invited,
Thy heav’nly joys to know!
Who would not be delighted
Thy fitting praise to show?

GERMAN
O König aller Frommen,
O Jesu, Davids Sohn,
du bist zu uns gekommen.
Im Himmel war dein Thron;
doch willst du, daß die Erde
zum Reiche dir geweiht,
auch wieder heilig werde,
ein Reich der Frömmigkeit.

2 Vom Morgen kommen Zeugen,
geführt durch deinen Stern,
ihr Knie vor dir zu beugen,
dir, ihrem Gott und Herrn;
sie opfern, was sie haben,
wie niedrig du auch bist,
mit Freuden ihre Gaben:
ihr Herz, das glaubig ist.

3 Die Erstlinge der Heiden
thun freudig, was Gott spricht,
und ärgern an dem Leiden,
des Königes sich nicht.
Ach, ärgert euch, ihr Sünder,
an seinem Leiden nicht;
er ging für Adams Kinder
erniedrigt ins Gericht!

4 Wann er für uns sein Leben
(das will des Vaters Rath;)
zum opfern hingegeben,
und uns versöhnet hat;
dann spricht der Herr zum Sohne;
Sohn, herrsche nun mit mir,
und sitz auf meinem Throne;
der Erdkreis diene dir!

5 Der Herr gibt ihm zur Beute
die Starken, rüsten gleich
die Völker sich zum Streite;
sein, sein ist doch das Reich!
Er herrscht, weil er sein Leben
für uns, die er vertrat,
zum Opfer hingegeben,
für uns gebetet hat.

6 Er herrscht von einem Meere
zum andern; tausend stehn
bereit zu seiner Ehre,
bereit ihn zu erhöhn.
Frohlocket ihm, ihr HEiden,
daß ihr berufen seid,
zu seines Reiches Freuden,
zu seiner Seligkeit.

7 Seht, auf des Vaters Throne,
regiert er! betet an!
bleibt alle Gottes Sohne
mit Freuden unterthan.
Durch Wahrheit und durch Gnade
regieret er sein Reich.
Was ist wohl, das euch schade?
getrost! er sorgt für euch.

8 Wir wollen dich erheben,
dir, Jesu, opfern wir
mit Freuden unser Leben;
sein Dienst gebühret dir!
ach, du beriefst uns Heiden
zur Seligkeit des Herrn,
zu deines Himmels Freuden,
wer preiset dich nicht gern?

Komm, heiliger Geist, mit Wonn

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn (sequence), “Komm, heiliger Geist, mit Wonn” (Martin Behm, d. 1622), a translation of the old Pentecost sequence, “Veni sancte Spiritus, et emitte caelitus,” in ELGB #170. Fischer omits it from his lexicon. Mützell in his entry gives the translation from Centuria precationum Rhythmicarum (Wittenberg: Berger, 1606), p. 97f., from which it was taken up by Breslau 1644 (with wrong attribution to Michael Bohemus); also in Erfurt 1648, Olearius’ Singekunst 1671, Leipzig 1673, etc. B. Meisner includes it also in his Meditationes Sacrae (1634) at the end of the postil for Pentecost Day. The melody in Breslau 1673, where it is also given for the Latin original, is a simplification of an ancient melody.

COME, Thou Holy Ghost with cheer,
Let from heaven’s seat appear
Of Thy light a glimmer clear.

2 Come, Thou Father of the poor,
Come, bestow Thy goodly store,
Come, our heart make glad e’ermore.

3 Comforter to them that grieve,
Sweetest Guest that souls receive,
With Thy peace our hearts relieve!

4 In our labor rest provide,
Cool those by cross-fever tried,
Stem the mourner’s tearful tide.

5 O Thou Light of heaven blest,
Make Thy ray in hearts to rest,
Which in faith Thou hast possessed.

6 Wanting Thy supporting flame,
No good thing we men can claim,
Who are filled with sin and shame.

7 Cleansing for our sins impart,
Water well the parchèd heart,
heal the wounded with Thine art.

8 Soften what is hard as stone,
Warm the heart that cold hath grown,
By the Word call back Thine own.

9 Give to them that Thee do hold
Only God, with faith made bold,
Thy pure gifts and sevenfold.

10 To us let Thy virtue flow,
Bless our end and mortal woe,
And in heaven bliss bestow.

LATIN

Komm heiliger Geist mit Wonn,
schick herab vons Himmels Thron,
Dein Glanz von der Gnaden Sonn.

2 Komm, o Vater armer Leut,
komm, gieb uns die beste Beut,
komm, gieb unsern Herzen Freud.

3 Tröster gut ins Creuzes Last,
o Du süßer Seelen-Gast,
schaff dem Herzen Fried' und Rast.

4 Gieb uns in der Arbeit Ruh,
die Creuz-Hitz' uns lindern thu,
sprich uns Trost im Weinen zu.

5 O Du selig's Himmels-Licht,
Dein'n Glanz in die Herzen richt',
die Dir willig sein verpflicht't.

6 Ohn' Dein' göttlich' Hülf' und Rath,
der Mensch nichts Gut's kann, noch hat,
steckt voll Sünd' und Missethat.

7 Wasch' uns all' von Sünden rein,
feucht' die dürren Herzen fein,
heil die, so verwundet sein.

8 Lenk, was störrisch ist, so bald

O heilige Dreifaltigkeit* (suppl.)

Here is my supplement to the translation of the hymn "O heilige Dreifaltigkeit" (M. Behm, ). The first five stanzas, tr. by C. H. L. Schuette, can be found in Ohio #295, LW #479, ELH #80, LSB #876. I include the version found in Ohio:

[1. O HOLY, blessed Trinity,

Divine, Essential Unity,

God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,

Be Thou this day my Guide and Host.

2. My soul and body keep from harm,

O’er all I have extend Thine arm,

That Satan may not cause distress,

Nor bring me shame or wretchedness.

3. The Father’s might shield me this day,

The Son’s pure wisdom cheer my way,

The Holy Spirit’s light divine

Illume my heart’s benighted shrine.

4. My Maker, strengthen Thou my heart,

O my Redeemer, help impart,
Blest Comforter, keep at my side,

That faith and love in me abide.

5 Lord, bless me! keep Thou me as Thine;
Lord, make Thy face upon me shine;

Lord, lift Thy countenance on me,
And grant me peace—sweet peace from Thee!]

6. With so divine a blessing now
From heaven’s throne my life endow
That on this day and those to be
I may from every plague be free.

7. Let me Thy true salvation know;
Thy comfort and good word bestow,
Thy flock invisible attend,
From every foe Thy church defend.

8. From all distress deliver me
That I may not confounded be,
So will I sing Thy heartfelt praise
Both now and for unending days.

O Tröster werth, weich nicht von mir,
mein Herz mit werthen Gaben zier.

HERR, leucht mich an ganz gnädiglich,
HERR, heb auf mich dein Angesicht,
dein Frieden auf mich armen richt.

6. Solch göttlich Benediction
send über mich vom Himmels Thron,
damit ich heut und alle Tag
durch dich frei sei von aller Plag.

7. Laß mich erlangen Trost und Heil,
