Here is my translation of the hymn, “So bei dem Herrn versammlet war” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia for Sexagesima. Gesius 1605 appoints the
Mel.: Freut euch, ihr Christen alle gleich.
WHEN to the Lord a multitude
From many towns their way pursued,
The nature of His Word He showed
In seed which some good sower sowed.
2 Upon the way much seed he strewed,
Which for the fowls did serve as food,
Or it was trampled underfoot,
And thus destroyed, took never root.
3 But some upon hard rock doth fall,
Grows dry and hard as bone withal,
And some doth fall amongst the thorn,
That chokes at last the sprouting corn.
4 But that which falls on goodly ground
Doth grow and with much fruit abound.
He that hath ears, let him give ear,
My words mark well, and closely hear!
5 Thereafter, when His faithful men
Bade Him the parable explain,
He said: To you ’tis giv’n to know
What I would by this likeness show.
6 The others, though they well may hear,
Yet none hath understanding clear;
Know, then, what this sown seed may be:
God’s Word ye ought therein to see.
7 The seed upon the way that fell
Are they who keep the Word not well;
The devil draws their heart aside,
So that they hear not nor confide.
8 But they are that rock-sitting seed
Who, when they hear believe indeed,
And with great joy the Word receive,
But in the cross are quick to leave.
9 But that which ’mongst the thorns doth fall
Are those unfit for heaven’s hall
Through worldly riches, cares, and shame,
And temp’ral goods, and pomp, and fame.
10 That which on goodly soil takes root
And bringeth forth abundant fruit
Are they who keep the Word, abide,
And in the cross turn not aside.
11 Lord Jesus, let Thy heav’nly Word
By us be ever gladly heard,
And deeply in our heart take hold,
And bring forth fruit a hundredfold. Amen.

GERMAN
So bei dem Herrn versammlet war
aus viel Städten ein große Schar,
vergleicht er sein Wort einem Sam
den aussäet ein Ackermann.
2 Auf den Weg fällt manchs Körnelein,
das wird zu Speis den Vögelein,
oder man tritt es mit eim Fuß,
das er im Weg verderben muß.
3 Etlichs aber fällt auf ein Stein,
verdorrt, und wird hart wie ein Bein,
manches fällt in ein Dörnenstrauch,
wenns gleich aufgeht erstickt es auch.
4 Welchs fällt aber in Acker gut,
das wächst und viel Frucht bringen thut,
wer Ohren hat, der thut sie auf,
und merk mein Red, geb Achtung drauf.
5 Darnach da ihn seine Jünger
fragten, was doch dies Gleichnis wär,
sprach er: Euch ist gegeben dies,
das ihr vernehmt diese Gleichnis.
6 Die andern ob sies hören wohl,
doch keiner solchs vernehmen soll,
so hört nun was der Same sei.
Gotts Wort sollt ihr verstehn dabei.
7 Der Sam, der auf den Weg hinfällt,
ist der Hauf ers Wort nit behält,
der Teufel ihr Herz macht entwicht,
das Wort sie hörn und glaubens nicht.
8 Die aber auf dem Fels, sind die,
wenn sie es hören, so glauben sie,
und nehmen es mit Freuden an,
im Kreuz aber sie nicht bestahn.
9 Das abr unter die Dörner fällt,
sind die, so Reichthum dieser Welt,
Sorg, Geiz, zeitlich Gut, Ehr und Pracht
zum Reich Gottes untüchtig macht.
10 Welcher fällt in ein Erdreich gut,
bekleibt und viel Frucht bringen thut,
sind die, sos Wort behalten fein,
und in dem Kreuz beständig sein.
11 Hilf, Herr Christ, daß dein göttlich Wort
von uns mit Lust stets wer gehort,
und auch in unser Herze dring,
und hundertfältig Früchte bring. Amen.
