Here is my translation of the hymn, “Was rühmt man sich des Namens viel?” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne Geistliche Lieder, hymn CXXII, one of several hymns for Trinity VIII, with title “Of those who enter into the kingdom of heaven, or not.”

WHY boast men greatly in a name?
Christ Jesus wants no false acclaim
From empty lips, whose ceaseless cry
“Lord, Lord!” assails His gate on high.
2 Not all who thusly call and shout
And make a pious show without
To heaven go as God’s elect:
Like actions must the words reflect.
3 Saith Jesus Christ, God’s very Son:
“They who My Father’s will alone
Perform, shall heaven’s kingdom see,
And joy with Me eternally.”
4 The Father’s will is in His Word
made manifest; that must be heard,
And in the heart received in faith,
And life in love lived as it saith.
5 Who otherwise believes and lives
Himself to God’s displeasure gives,
Though angel-like on earth he dwell,
He falls from heaven into hell.
6 From such a fall defend us, Lord!
Thy doctrine’s light to us afford,
Us in Thy Father’s will employ,
That we may hail Thy throne with joy.

Was rühmt man sich des Namens viel?
Jesus Christus nicht haben will,
daß nur der Mund oft sag, Herr, Herr,
vor des himlischen Königs Thür.
2 Nicht alle, die so rufen thun,
und äußerlich sich stellen schon,
werden kommen ins Himmelreich,
die That muß sein den Worten gleich.
3 Die meines Vaters Willen thun,
spricht Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
werden allein in Himmel gehn,
mit mir ewige Freude sehn.
4 Des Vaters Will ist in seim Wort
ganz offenbart, das muß gehort,
das muß im Herzen sein gegläubt,
und in der Lieb darnach gelebt.
5 Wer anders gläubt, und anders lebt,
wider den Willen Gottes strebt,
wenn er sich auch gleich englisch stellt
zur Höllen aus dem Himmel fällt.
6 Vor solchem Fall behüt uns, Herr,
laß uns vorleuchten deine Lehr,
daß wir deins Vaters Willen thun,
