Here is my translation of the hymn, “Das ist des rechten Glaubens Art” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica, for Trinity VII, the first of two hymns.
Mel.: Warum betrübst du dich mein Herz.
IT is faith’s nature true and right,
To knit the heart to Jesus tight,
And let go all things else;
Indeed, it food and drink forgets
When on the Lord its hope it sets.
2 Whoever will his senses turn,
His soul’s condition to discern,
Will seldom ponder how,
If but his soul is well supplied,
His body may be satisfied.
3 By bread alone man liveth not,
Yet by the Word, as we are taught,
Which from God’s mouth proceeds,
Come means, the body to sustain,
When thirst and hunger cause it pain.
4 The multitude had naught to eat,
Yet followed Jesus’ preaching sweet
In faith, by love compelled;
Yet hunger gladly they endured
If they might be but with this Lord.
5 Dear soul, have also such a mind:
If Jesus thou before thee find,
Think not of food and drink,
But pliant to His Spirit be,
And let naught be so dear to thee.
6 Though in thy hunger flesh grow faint,
The staff of Jesus guides the saint
The way to pasture sweet,
And to the soul gives faithfully
What to the flesh may scanty be.
7 He hath compassion when He sees
How toils thy soul, forsaking ease,
Th’ eternal to obtain.
Then cometh He, and help is brought,
So that the body hungers not.
8 Then firmly in thy Lord confide;
I know He will not leave thy side
In any hungry hour.
He knoweth well thine every ache,
So doth His heart for sorrow break.
9 He will not let thee distant go
Ere He shall help and succor show,
If constant thou remain.
He hears, so instantly implore,
Nor waver now nor evermore.
10 O Jesus, Refuge, Thee I pray,
In soul to feed me day by day,
And I will be content!
If I the body’s hunger feel,
Throw me of bread a little heel!
11 I trust that heart that breaketh sore
For pity, as in days of yore,
Which, finding faithfulness
In souls that follow Him and seek,
Their bodies feeds when they are weak.
12 Yea, what the flesh needs most of all
Give me—a trifling gift and small,
O Jesus, Shepherd true,
Who gav’st the gift that most avails:
Forget not what this body ails!
13 To Thee I now my all commend,
Heart, body, soul, and spirit tend,
My pain and want receive;
In life for me provide and care,
That I may ever praise Thee there!

GERMAN
Das ist des rechten Glaubens Art,
wenn sich das Herz zu Jesu part,
und alles stehen läßt,
ja Essen, Trinken gar vergißt,
wenn es bei sienem Jesu ist.
2 Wer nur die Sinnen dahin lenkt,
daß er an seine Seele denkt,
der denkt oft nicht daran,
wenn er nur Seelen Speise hat,
wie auch der Leib soll werden satt.
3 Der Mensch lebt nicht vom Brot allein,
das Wort kann auch die Nahrung sein,
das seinen Leib erhält,
das aus dem Munde Gottes geht,
wenn Durst und Hungersnoth entsteht.
4 Das Volk hat gar zu essen nicht,
das Jesu nach der Liebespflicht
im Glauben folget nach,
doch dulden sie den Hunger gern,
wenn sie nur sind bei diesem Herrn.
5 Ach Seele, sei auch so gesinnt,
wenn sich dein Jesus bei dir findt,
laß stehen Speis und Trank,
und folge seines Geistes Trieb
und laß dir nichtes sein so lieb.
6 NImmt gleich dein Leib für Hunger ab,
so wird dich Jesu Hirtenstab
zur süßen Weide führn,
und deiner Seelen legen bei,
was leiblich fehlt, nach seiner Treu.
7 Es jammert ihn, wenn er ansieht,
wie deine Seele sich bemüht,
nur um das ewige,
da stellt er sich bald hülfreich ein,
daß nicht der Leib muß hungrig sein.
8 Vertraue deinem Jesu fest,
ich weiß, daß er dich nicht verläßt
in keiner Hungersnoth,
er weiß und kennet deinen Schmerz
und bricht der Jammer ihm sein Herz.
9 Er lässet dich nicht von sich gehn,
eh du wirst Hülf und Beistand sehn,
wenn du beständig bleibst,
halt an, halt aus, er gibt Gehör,
und wanke nun und nimmermehr.
10 O Jesu, speise mich, mein Hort,
an meiner Seelen fort und fort,
so will ichi sein vergnügt,
o Jesu, treuer Hirt,
der du das größte hast geschenkt,
vergiß nicht, was dem Leib hier kränkt.
13 Ja ich befehle dir mein Herz,
Leib, Seel und Geist und allen Schmerz,
und alles, was mir fehlt,
versorge mich, so lang ich leb,
daß ich dich ewig dort erheb.
