Here is my translation of the hymn, “Selig ist, wer sich mit Macht” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia melodica, for Trinity V, the first of two hymns.
Mel.: Singen wir aus Herzens Grund.
BLEST are they who with all might
Press on Jesus day and night
And to hear the Word of God
Have to that high station trod,
Where heart is Spirit-taught
And the devil brought to naught,
Blest are they who Christ have sought.
2 Few have yet to Jesus pressed
Where their souls appointed rest
And th’ assembly may be found
Where His people Him surround.
Sadly doth the world ensnare
Many a soul with worldly care,
So that they come never there.
3 On Gennes’ret’s lake and shore
Where the Savior stood of yore
Was the very holy ground,
Chapel, church, and pulpit found.
But His Word still rings aright
In our hearts by day and night.
There is Jesus’ seat and site.
4 Ah, dost thou a blessing seek,
Soul, press hither, humble, meek,
With a faith sincere press in,
Having left the house of sin,
Hear with all thy heart, and see
What Christ maketh known to thee,
Yea, let naught a hindrance be.
5 In the heart a sanctum deep
As the Savior’s vessel keep,
Which the Spirit through the Word
Steers to heaven undeterred.
Follow when He thee doth guide.
While with thee He doth abide,
Shall thy ship stray not aside.
6 From the land then launch thou out,
Leave the tomb of sin and doubt,
Flee the world and what it loves,
As thy Jesus’ pattern proves.
To the deep go further on,
Till the farthest sea be won,
Saying: “Lord, Thy will be done.”
7 Hear what Jesus teaches thee,
Ere thou to thy labor see;
Squander not life’s little day
Nor for want of needs delay.
One thing’s needful, one the best,
Whereby body_and soul are blest;
Choose thou that ere thou must rest.
8 Then let work proceed apace,
And each person in his place
With all care let do his best
Following his God’s behest,
Then shall blessings overflow,
And their bounty thou shalt know,
Else must thou that good forgo.
9 Jesus, let me night and day
Heed Thy holy Word and way,
Seeking after righteousness
In this present time of grace,
And God’s kingdom heavenly;
Then I know Thou hearest me
And the rest shall added be.

Selig ist, wer sich mit Macht
dringt zu Jesu Tag und Nacht,
und zu hören Gottes Wort
sich einfindet an dem Ort,
wo sein Geist das Herze lehrt,
und des Satans Werk zerstört;
selig ist, wer also hört.
2 Wenig dringen sich hinzu,
wo sie ihre Seelenruh
finden, und zu der Gemein,
wo sich Jesus findet ein.
Ach die meisten hat die Welt
mit der Wolluststrick beschnellt,
daß sie bleiben abgesellt.
3 An der See Genesareth
war damals die Heilge Stätt,
Kirche Kanzel und Kapell,
da der Heiland war zur Stell,
aber itzo schallt sein Wort
noch im Herzen fort und fort,
dies ist Jesus Sitz und Ort.
4 Ach willtu gesegnet sein,
Seele, so dring hier hinein,
geh in wahrem Glauben aus,
aus dem alten Sündenhaus,
und hör an aus Herzens Grund,
was dir Jesus machet kund,
ja versäume keine Stund.
5 In dem innern Herzens Schrein,
laß das Schifflein Jesu sein,
das sein Geist durchs Wort regiert,
und zum Himmel täglich führt.
Folge, wenn sein Geist dich treibt,
denn so lang er bei dir bleibt,
wird dein Schifflein nicht betäubt.
6 Setze stets vom Lande ab,
und verlaß das Sündengrab,
flieh die Welt, und was sie liebt,
wie dein Jesus Beispiel giebt.
Fahre immer auf die Höh
zu dem liebes Meer und See,
und sprich: Herr, dein Will gescheh.
7 Höre erst was Jesus lehrt,
eh man zu der Arbeit kehrt:
Diese Zeit versäume nicht,
wenns an Nothdurft gleich gebricht,
eins ist noth, das beste Theil
bringt an Seel und Leib der Heil,
dies erwähl, so lang es feil.
8 Denn so setz die Arbeit fort
jeder man an seinem Ort,
doch verricht er seinen Fleiß,
nach dem göttlichen Geheiß,
so wird Segen Überfluß
sich dir zeigen zum Genuß,
des man sonst entbehren muß.
9 Jesu, laß mich früh und spat
folgen deinem Heilgen Rath,
daß ich nach Gerechtigkeit
tracht in dieser Gnadenzeit,
und nach Gottes Reich zuerst,
so weiß ich, daß du mich hörst,
und das Übrige bescherst.
