¶ It is a psalm of thanksgiving for the benefits of God which He has shown to His church, and at the same time a psalm of supplication for Christendom and the Gospel, that God would preserve it against the rage and fury of the kings and princes. First it praises and glorifies throughout the psalm the great power, kind presence, gracious mercy, glorious name, honor, and righteousness of God. Next it portrays the church to us in most kindly fashion as a beautiful branch, majestic palace, and grand city. Then it thanks God for his protection against so many powerful and angry enemies who were always made to depart in shame and to leave God's Word and church intact. It prophesies that they will not accomplish their further undertakings, nor bring them to pass, but in attacking God’s people shall meet their shame. It promises God’s eternal proteciton, assistance, and preservation, and at the same time confesses faith and hope, and exhorts all Christians heartily to trust in, praise, and thank God, and as far as possible to build up and further the church.

GREAT is the Lord, and high of fame,
Blest is he who to the Same

2 A beauteous branch is Zion’s mount,
For all lands true comfort’s fount,
To northward lies God’s city fair,
His royal throne He keepeth there,

3 The Christian Church God’s city is,
Which He built and calleth His
Throughout the world in many a place,
But by His godly Word of grace,

4 Wherever God’s Word is proclaimed
As th’ Arch-shepherd hath ordained,
And God alone is glorified,
God and His angel host abide,

5 Where God is glorified alone,
And naught else instead is known,
There is a glorious palace found,
And God the Guest o’er all renowned,

6 God will the church’s refuge be,
Fighting for her mightily,
Though kings assemble on the plain,
Against Him they shall nothing gain,

7 They marveled oft and troubled stood,
That they gained not as they would,
But troubled, hasted at the last
And in defeat to earth were cast,

8 For pain they trembled and grew pale
As a woman in travail,
For fear they knew not where to go,
Their evil conscience seized them so,

9 The Lord did break the ships at sea,
Set on them the east wind free,
Destroyed as well the godless band,
And brought to naught all that they planned.
10 What we heard prophesied of old
In God’s city we behold—
The city of the Lord of Hosts—
Our God preserves her bounds and coasts,

11 Upon Thy grace, O Lord, we wait,
Guard us in Thy temple great.
God, as Thy name, so is Thy praise
In all the world, now and always,

12 What hath been ever taught of Thee,
Thou hast proved it verily,

Throughout the world, to all earth’s ends,

13 Thy hand is full of righteousness,
Giving Zion joyfulness,

To know Thy judgments justly laid.

3 Die christlich Kirch ist Gottes Stadt,
die er selbst gebauet hat,
wohl in der Welt am manchem Ort,

wies befohlen der Erzhirt,
und man Gott gibt allein die Ehr,
da ist Gott samt der Engel Heer,

da ist ein herrlich schön Pallast,
und Gott ein wohlbekannter Gast,

6 Der Kirchen Schutz will Gott selbst sein,
und streiten für sie allein,
wenn gleich König versammlen sich,
so sollen sie doch schaffen nichts,

7 Sie haben sich verwundert oft,

gelungen ist, und sich entsetzt,

an der Stadt des Herrn Zebaoth,

11 Wir warten, Herr, auf deine Güt,

Gott, wie dein Nam, so ist dein Ruhm

12 Was man von dir stets hat gelehrt,
