Sehet euch für, spricht Christ der Herr

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Sehet euch für, spricht Christ der Herr” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity VIII.

Mel.: O Herre Gott, dein göttlich Wort.

BEWARE their horde, / saith Christ the Lord,

Of prophets all the Master—

And wary be / of prophecy;

False spirits fill God’s pasture!

Upon the way / them well survey,

Who hasten, falsehood dealing.

To teach the land / ’gainst My command

Though to My name appealing.

2 Sheep’s clothing they / put on by day,

The people oft deceiving.

But inwardly / they’re bloodthirsty,

Like wolves men’s souls aggrieving.

Their mouth may well / with Scripture swell,

God’s Word be ever speaking,

But this they twist, / and thus is missed

The truth that men were seeking.

3 They holy seem / with words that gleam,

Concealing and well dressing

What guile and art / is in their heart,

Until great strength possessing,

A host they bring / beneath their wing,

Who think their side the fairer,

And with their horde / compel the Word

To fortify their error.

4  Thus all they do / they would construe

As godly deeds and teaching

Pure holiness / which God doth bless,

And Holy Spirit’s preaching—

Such is their boast. / But let their host

Not with their sheepskin sway you!

Behold their fruit, / and falsehood’s root,

Nor let thine eyes betray you.

5 No heart laid low / with sin and woe

With them finds consolation;

To Christ is none / there told to run,

Who paid for our salvation,

Whose righteousness / cures our distress;

None peace or joy receiveth,

For, destitute / of this good fruit,

No doctrine man relieveth.

6 In sheepskin dressed, / yet in their breast

Is hate and spite enclosèd;

Whoe’er they find / shares not their mind

To him they are opposèd—

Yea, murd’rously, / as men may see

When they attained to power;

The papal ban / they laid on man,

And made us Germans cower.

7 Praise be to God / who spoiled their fraud

And showed their wolfish manner—

Not those alone / who lies condone

Beneath the papal banner,

But those as well / who words compel

Against the Supper holy,

And Christ offend. / Lord, till the end,

Help us adore Thee solely!

GERMAN

Sehet euch für, spricht Christ der Herr

aller Propheten Meister,

für allem Volk sie tragen;

aber ihr Muth dürstet nach Blut,

gar wölfisch ist ihr Magen,

sie haben wohl ihren Mund voll

der bibelischen Sprüche,

aber verkehrt, da man verführt,

nicht finde, was man suche.

den Namen Gottes haben;

wird recht bei ihn getröstet;

keim wird gezeigt Gerechtigkeit

am Herrn, der uns erlöset;

kein Fried noch Freud für Herzenleid,

dem Traurigen wird geben;

ohn welche Frucht kein Lehr getucht

hat je der Menschen Leben.

6 Voll Haß und Neid im Schäfenkleid

sind alle falsche Lehrer;

wer nicht mit ihn helt gleichen Sinn,

dem sind sie stracks zuwider,

ja mördrisch feind, wies denn erscheint,

wenn sie die Macht bekommen;

des Pabstes Bann hat solchs gethan,

wir Deutschen habns vernommen,

7 Gott sei gepreist, der uns geweist,

daß wir die Wölfe kennen,

nicht allein die, so Täuscherei

päpstischer Weis fürbringen,

sondern auch sunst durch Menschen Kunst

des Herren Wort verkehren,

im Sakrament: Herr, bis ans End

stärk uns zu deinen Ehren. Amen.
