Wohl dem, der so zu Jesu kommt

Here is my translation of the Holy Trinity / Baptism hymn, “Wohl dem, der so zu Jesu kommt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #74, for Trinity Sunday (Gospel: John 3:1–15) with melody assignment “Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern.” The English adaptation in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) is titled “How Blest Are They Who Take Delight” (8 st., Common Meter).

 

BLEST he who doth to Jesus come,
And doth receive His Word and sum
Of all His teaching holy!
Then Jesus will to him make plain
What else to him must dark remain,
And He will find out truly
That we
Must be
new birth given,
Born of heaven
Through our Savior
On this earth, or perish ever.

2 One Nicodemus comes by night,
And hears the words of Christ our Light:
To what I say be heedful:
Amen, Amen, I say to thee,
It is the truth; believe Thou me,
Rebirth for thee is needful.
Else can
No man,
Unforgiven,
Enter heaven;
By this truly
Shall he see God’s kingdom holy.

3 He who is not (so we must warn)
By water and by Spirit born,
As God Himself decreëth,
Knows not the working which doth place
That man within the state of grace,
And from transgression freëth.
No sight
Of light
He possesses,
But transgresses,
Comprehending
Not the Spirit, nor amending.

4 He cannot be a Christian true
Who is not born by God anew,
Who by the flesh yet liveth;
Stone-blind and deaf he is within,
Lives still content in many a sin,
Nor after virtue striveth.
All his
Life is
Putrefaction,
Dead to action
And that living
Which God’s Spirit would be giving.

5 But reason and intelligence
Cannot this work perceive or sense,
Nor can man’s thought discover;
The Spirit worketh as He will;
O man, be to His working still,
Let him thy heart warm over;
For He
gives thee
Love increasing,
Life unceasing;
Thus He shows thee
That as His new child He knows thee.

6 Yet who thou art, be mindful e’er,
Remembering God’s ord’nance fair,
And how His Word instructs thee.
The Bible clearly teaches thee
God works in thee vicariously,
So do as He directs thee.
Thou know’st
Thou dost
Owe Him ever
To endeavor
To obey Him,
Nor, unfaithful, to betray Him.

How blest are they who take delight
To visit Christ the Lord!
As Nicodemus came by night,
To hear the Gospel Word.

2 The Lord will open to their view,
The things of greatest worth—
That which before they never knew:
The new and heav'nly birth.

3 Christ solemnly declares 'tis true,
This truth will e'er remain;
God's kingdom ye can never view,
Till ye are born again!

4 Indeed ye must be thus renewed?
And feel this change within:
Or ne'er become the sons of God,
And live and die in sin.

5 This works a change upon the mind,
And fills the soul with love!
And thus the seeking soul shall find:
This work is from above.

6 The water and the Spirit are
The means which Christ directs;
And as the Savior doth declare:
These must have their effects.

7 But how this gracious work is wrought,
Is more than man can know!
And far beyond the reach of thought,
What heav'nly grace can do.

8 The Spirit worketh as He please;
And they who will submit,
Shall find that God's appointed ways
Will make the work complete.

Wohl dem, der so zu Jesu kömmt,
daß er sein Wort und Lehr annimmt,
den wird er selber lehren.
Dann Jesus macht ihm offenbar,
daß was ihm sonst verborgen war,
der wird auch selbst erfahren,
daß man
auch schon
hier auf Erden
gwiß muß werden
neugeboren,
oder ewig sein verloren.

2 Ein Nicoedmus kommt bei Nacht
zu dem der Heiland selber sagt,
Merk auf was du thust hören:
ich sage wahrlich, wahrlich dir,
es ist die Wahrheit, glaub du mir,
ihr müßt sein neugeboren.
Sonst bleibt
allzeit
es unmöglich
und unfüglich
einzugehen
oder Gottes Reich zu sehen.

3 Wer nicht aus Wasser und aus Geist
so wie die göttlich Ordnung weist
von Herzen wird erneuert,
dem bleibt dir Wirkung unbekannt,
die ihn versetzt in Gnadenstand,
und von der Sünd befreiet.
Hat nicht
das Licht,
daß er stehet,
noch verstehet
Geistes Werke,
hat zum Guten auch nicht Stärke.

4 Der kann nicht sein ein wahrer Christ,
der nicht von Gott geboren ist,
der nach dem Fleisch nur lebet,
der ist noch geistlich taub und blind,
lebt noch vergnügt in mancher Sünd,
auch nicht nach Tugend strebet.
Er steht,
er geht
noch verdorben,
bleibt erstorben
zu dem Leben,
das durch Gottes Geist wird geben.

5 Wie aber dieses Werk geschieht,
Verstand und Witz es nicht einsieht,
Vernunft kanns nicht ergründen,
der Geist der wirket wie er will;
Mensch halt nur seiner Wirkung still!
laß ihn dein Herz anzünden:
mit Lieb,
mit Trieb
zu dem Leben
von Gott geben,
wirst erfahren,
daß du dann wirst neugeboren.

6 Doch merke ferner, wer du bist,
was dennoch Gottes Ordnung ist,
wie dich sein Wort anweiset.
Die Bibel lehrt uns dies ja klar:
Gott wirkt in uns auch mittelbar,
drum thu was er dich heißet.
Du weißt,
er heißt
uns recht streben,
so zu leben,
wie befohlen,
wann wir selig werden wollen.
