Herr Gott, in dein Reich kommt niemand

Here is my translation of the Trinity / Baptism hymn, “Herr Gott, in dein Reich kommt niemand” (Anon., bef. 1812), in NEGB #75 under Trinity Sunday with melody assignment “Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit.” It is not known earlier. It is, however, marked with the cipher M, possibly indicating a Miller, Moser, or Moretz, families eventually associated with the Henkels through the imminent Ev. Luth. Tenn. Synod, though none is attested as having written any church hymnody, German or otherwise. No analogous adaptation seems to appear in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.).

 

NONE comes into Thy kingdom, Lord,
Unless reborn of heaven;
John wrote with his own hand this word,
And Christ hath witness given;
The doctrine is as clear as morn:
Whoever is not here reborn
Shall lost remain forever.

2 Who of the flesh is born, is flesh,
Still to the world is clinging,
No Christian true, though fair and fresh
And life uprightly bringing:
He must be altered inwardly,
And cleansed from sin’s impurity,
And die to carnal passion.

3 Through Water, Spirit, and God’s Word,
This work must be completed;
By this thy Savior, God the Lord,
Shows power undefeated:
He works the change within the heart,
Doth faith and life thereby impart,
New birth on thee bestowing.

4 God did Himself this ord’nance make,
’Twas He who did decree it,
Thus to His kingdom thee betake,
Or thou shalt never see it;
For none shall wear the glorious crown
On that great Day, but he alone
Who is reborn of heaven.

5 Wouldst thou therefore be born again
And live with Christ forever,
Be His alone, and so remain:
No more resist the Savior;
Thy heart unclose to be His throne;
He’ll change it, though ’twere hard as stone;
His Spirit thee will quicken.

Herr Gott, in dein Reich kommt niemand,
er sei denn neugeboren.
Johannes schrieb mit seiner Hand:
was Christus selbst geschworen:
die Lehre ist gar deutlich die,
wer nicht wird neugeboren hie,
bleibt ewig dort verloren.

2 Wer Fleisch vom Fleisch geboren ist,
der an der Welt noch klebet,
der ist dennoch kein wahrer Christ,
ob er gleich sittlich lebet:
sein Herze muß verändert sein,
auf daß es werd von Sünden rein,
und Fleisches Lust muß sterben.

3 Durchs Wasser, Geist und Gottes Wort,
soll dieses Werk geschehen;
wodurch der Herr dein Heil und Hort,
läßt seine Kraft dich sehen:
im Herzen die Verändrung wirkt,
den Glauben und das Leben stärkt,
daß du wirst neugeboren.

4 Die Ordnung ist von Gott bestellt,
er selbst hats so beschlossen,
geh dadurch ein, verlaß die Welt,
du bleibst sonst ausgeschlossen;
denn niemand trägt die Ehrenkron
an jenem großen Tag davon,
als nur der Neugeborne.

5 Willst du nun neugeboren sein,
mit Christo ewig leben,
ergib dich ihm nur ganz allein,
