Der Höllen Pforten sind zerstört

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn, “Der Hölle[n] Pforten sind zerstört” (Michael Schirmer, d. 1673), in NEGB #55 for Easter Sunday in revised form of 5 stanzas with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit,” first appearing in 6 stanzas in Newes vollkömliches Gesangbuch (1640). The form in the Henkel’s hymnal is a revision omitting the 3rd stanza and reworking much of the language throughout. The original readings I have added in brackets to the right of the revised version. Scriptural references in the original text include 1 Cor. 15:55-57; Rom. 5:15–16; 2 Tim. 1:10; Rev. 12:10–12. The first musical setting below is taken from Crüger’s Praxis Pietatis Melica (1668 ed.).

 

 

Original Form.

THE gates of hell are all destroyed,
And death is wholly swallowed,
And Satan’s realm is waste and void.
O God, be praised and hallowed!
Abolished is the pow’r of sin,
By Christ the way to heav’n again
To us now open standeth.

2 What was by ancient Adam’s fall
In paradise removèd—
That, and much more, was gained for all
By Christ, who so man lovèd.
The Champion born of David hath
Stilled all His Father’s flames of wrath
And with His blood hath quenched them.

3 This day He from the tomb did fly
With pow’r its bounds hath broken,
And raised salvation’s banner high
As He before had spoken.
He brings from battle spoils immense
Of peace renewed, and confidence,
Yea, all His heav’nly treasures.

4 So let us lift our heart and mind
With joy to God in heaven,
Since now this time of grace we find
From heav’n again is given!
We have Christ’s kingdom and His might.
The foe is gone, who day and night
Before our God accused us.

5 He who deceived the world to woe
Now in the dust doth cower;
The death of souls, who long ago
Was strong, hath lost his power!
The Lamb’s own blood hath him ashamed,
The Witness true hath vict’ry claimed,
And kept us to salvation.

6 We too, when present life is o’er,
Shall rise like Christ before us,
And with Him into heaven soar
And into bliss most glorious;
For where the Head is, there as well
Must all the other members dwell
As in Paul’s book is written!

2 The life, which Adam in the fall
Had lost, for us is gainèd.
He lives, nor was in vain at all
The death that He sustainèd.
He plundered death of all his might,
Life and salvation brought to light,
And peace and justice given.

3 So let us keep with holy joy
The vict’ry celebration,
For Jesus’ might our voice employ
In hymns of jubilation!
His kingdom stands, as King He reigns
And evermore His rule maintains
In earth and heav’n unceasing.

4 Death, that so fearsome did appear,
O’er Christ hath no more power.
Where is thy sting? What is to fear?
Your hymns, O Christians, shower
Upon the Son, who vict’ry claimed!
Lo, at the Victor’s feet ashamed
Both hell and Satan cower.

5 Be of good cheer! For here is shown
How Christ from death will free us;
He, who doth go to God’s high throne,
One day again will see us
And will Himself unlock our grave
And us from bonds of death will save.
