Du Geber aller Güter

Here is my translation of the Holy Spirit / Cross & Comfort hymn, “Du Geber aller Güter” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #68 for Exaudi Sunday (Gospel: John 15:26–16:4) with melody assignment “Herzlich thut mich verlangen.” The possible English adaptation in 6 stanzas of Common Meter, “Christ’s Servants Should Not Be Afraid” in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) seems to be Henkel’s expansion of stanzas 3-5 especially and is included below for comparison.

 

OF ALL good gifts Thou Giver,
O precious Holy Ghost,
The mind Thou soothest ever,
Since Thou Thyself well know’st
What anguish and distresses
God’s children here betide,
What grief their heart possesses
While they on earth reside.

2 Thou camest from the Father
And by the Son wast sent,
To shine where saints may gather,
And make their hearts content,
Proclaiming Jesus’ merit
And death for sinners’ sake,
That we, who  grace inherit,
Of heaven may partake.

3 It ought not curious make us
That days are void of ease,
And worldlings seek to break us.
If God we seek to please,
It never can be doubted,
We will without delay
By foe and world be flouted,
As Christ Himself doth say.

4 And though the world revile us,
Yea though we must be slain,
Since Christ doth reconcile us,
It must be for our gain;
Naught can in peril place us,
God knows the way to go.
In grace He doth embrace us,
And heav’nly good bestow.

5 Here in this life before us,
We are for that prepared,
Where is repaid more glorious
What we with sorrow shared.
The present age’s suff’ring
By no means can compare
To God’s most glorious proff’ring
Of joy that waiteth there.

Du Geber aller Güter,
du werther Heilger Geist,
du tröstest die Gemüther,
weil du ja selber weißt,
wieviel die Noth und Plagen
auf Gottes Kinder fällt;
wieviel ihr Angst und Zagen,
ist hier in dieser Welt.

2 Du bist vom Vater kommen
und auch vom Sohn gesandt,
zum Licht und Trost der Frommen
du machest uns bekannt:
daß Jesus durch sein Sterben
bringt uns das ewig Heil,
macht uns der Gnaden Erben,
giebt uns am Himmel Theil.

3 Es sollt uns nicht befremden,
wann uns verfolgt die Welt,
ob wir gleich täglich kämpfen;
thun wir was Gott gefällt:
so findt sich ohne Zweifel,
daß alsdann sich empört
die Welt und auch der Teufel,
wie Christus uns selbst lehrt.

4 Wird uns die Welt verschmähen,
ja, nimmt sies Leben hin,
so muß es doch geschehen,
daß es wird uns Gewinn;
so kanns uns auch nicht schaden,
Gott weiß wohl was er thut:
er nimmt uns auf in Gnaden,
schenkt uns das ewig Gut.

5 Wir werden hier im Leben
für jene Welt bereit,
dort wird uns Gott schon geben
den Lohn für alles Leid.
Ach, dieser Zeit ihr Leiden
ist keinesweges werth
der Herrlichkeit und Freuden,
die uns Gott dort beschert.
