Nun ist die süße Friedenszeit

Here is my translation of “Nun ist die süsse Friedenszeit,” Laurentii’s hymn for the first day of Christmas. (In early Lutheran calendars, according to Luther’s own prescription, the Masses of Christmas were essentially spread out over three days, superseding Stephenmas and Johnmas.) Laurentii gives three “parts” to his hymnody for Christmas, Day One. This is the first, and focuses on themes of welcoming and preparing to receive Jesus, the Bread of heaven. The appointed melody is “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr.”

THE pleasant time of peace is here,

When Christ was born for mortals!

My heart, in readiness appear,

Unbar the gates and portals,

That Christ, the newborn Infant may

Come in to thee and in thee stay,

And in the Spirit bear thee!

2 It is the time of peace’s flow’r,

Our heavn’ly Caesar’s reigning;

Oh, make thy heart a holy bow’r

With peace and love unfeigning;

The God of peace so hallow thee,

That Jesus may united be

In faith with thine own spirit.

3 It is the time when Judah’s land

To ruin was descending,

Corruption had the upper hand

O’er ev’ry part impending;

Oh, ponder, Christian, now thy heart,

How deep in sin thou fallen art,

That thou may’st find assistance.

4 With Joseph therefore let us hence

To Bethlehem the lowly,

And see with poor and needy saints

The earth’s Salvation holy.

The lodging is but small and plain,

And yet the Savior will remain

Where humble souls are dwelling.

5 My heart, until this life is through,

With lowly men be humble,

And since it pleases Jesus too,

For high things do not stumble.

Though home be not Jerusalem,

Yet live at peace in Bethlehem,

For there is Jesus present.

6 In Bethlehem, the house of bread,

There is sweet bread of heaven;

Make haste, O man, wouldst thou be fed,

While bread of life is given!

The door is open, Christ today

Sweet heav’nly manna gives away

To needy souls in Bethl’hem.

7 O dearest Jesus, feed Thou me

In soul and body ever!

Let me prefer naught else to Thee

Nor any food more favor.

Thou art, while I’m alive or dead,

My sweetest drink and heav’nly bread,

For Thou wast Man begotten.

Nun ist die süße Friedenszeit,

da Jesus wird geboren;

drum mache dich, mein Herz, bereit,

und offne Tür und Toren,

daß bei dir möge ziehen ein

das neugeborne Kindelein,

und dich im Geist gebären.

2 Es ist die Zeit, da Friede blüht,

und ein August regieret,

ach, laß mit Friede, Lieb und Güt

auch sein dein Herz gezieret,

der Gott des Friedens heilge dich,

daß Jesus heut vereinge sich

mit deinem Geist im Glauben.

3 Es ist die Zeit, da im Verfall

Judäa war gekommen,

da das Verderben überall,

hatt überhand genommen,

ach! denk an deine Sünd, o Christ,

so leb in Fried in Bethlehem,

weil Jesus da zu finden.

6 Es wird das süße Lebensbrot

im Brot-Haus angetroffen,

drum eil, o Mensch, in Hungersnot,

so long die Tür ist offen,

zum Lebensbrot, weil Jesus heut,

das Himmel-süße Manna streut

in Bethlehem den Armen.

7 Ach, liebster Jesu! speise mich

an Leib und an der Seelen,

laß mich im Leben ohne dich

kein andre Speis erwählen,

du bleibst im Leben und im Tod,

mein Trank und süßes Himmelbrot,

weil du bist Mensch geboren.

Weil wir sind ausgesandt

Here is my translation of Laurentii’s hymn, “Weil wir sind ausgesandt” (Evangelia melodica, 1700), on the gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday in Advent, applying the material of the account to the task of the preaching office, with somewhat peremptory language. As often the case, Laurentii’s text is better for personal devotion and not for church use. The appointed melody is O Gott du frommer Gott. Since this hymn was not normally rhymed on the odd lines (these being seen as half lines particularly with this melody) the same approach has been followed here, though the lines have been divided in English as commonly found in our hymnals.

BY God we are sent forth

Each to His own position,

And each must give account

Of his appointed mission;

Woe to the man remiss

In this his service due,

Who only lived in show,

Not as a Christian true.

2 O soul, whoe’er thou art,

Thy faithfulness show clearly,

And let thy heart obey

The Lord, His will hold dearly!

John, to his office true,

Confessed, nor yet denied,

But said he merely was

The voice of one who cried.

3 Be thou God’s instrument,

His tool and channel lowly,

Confessing as thy Lord

Christ Jesus, and Him solely.

’Tis He who does all things,

And all within us proves;

The man is pow’rless, dead,

Unless God’s Spirit moves.

4 Oh, follow then His call,

Thy will to His arresting;

For is salvation e’er

A matter for man’s jesting?

Alas! How often hath

Christ at thine entrance knocked,

And thou thine ears hast stopped,

Thy heart to Him hast locked?

5 Still may the Lord be heard,

The day of His salvation

Still tarries, still He speaks

By servants in creation;

Though they be but the voice,

The Spirit through the Word

Makes men in pow’r of faith

To call Christ Jesus Lord.

6 If thou a teacher art,

And oft in desert dreary

Must lift thy voice to speak,

With sowing seed art weary,

Cry still, and spare thou not,

And lift thy voice yet high’r!

Heed not the raging world

Nor Satan’s wrath and ire.

7 Prepare the Lord His way

As by His Word directed,

In others souls as thine

(For that may be detected

By others, which thou mak’st

Thy practice carefully);

Who lives as he believes,

A man of God is He.

8 If thou by God art sent

To teach and baptize rightly,

Then follow His command,

And with all sin unsightly

Confront the stubborn crowd;

This is thy task and lot,

For which thou hast been sent

So cry, and spare thou not!

9 Yea, let each man persist

In sighing and beseeching,

For Jesus without doubt

Is with us in our teaching.

He has a plan to work;

Woe to all those who dare,

Although they know Him not,

His name themselves to bear!

10 How many say His name,

Yet know Him not, and perish!

Wherefore, O Christ, today

Thy righteous offspring cherish

Who their unworthiness

To Thine acclaim confess;

Sustain Thine heritage,

Thy Church confirm and bless!

So muß man Rechenschaft von der Gesandtschaft geben;

2 Ach Seele, wer du bist, laß deine Treu erblicken,

in andern und in dir; denn was du selbst wirst üben,

das kannst du nach der Kraft den Seelen zeigen an;

10 Wie mancher nennet ihn, und kennt nicht seinen Namen;

drum Jesu Christ, erhalt heut den gerechten Samen,

die ihr Unwürdigkeit erkennen, dir zum Ruhm;

erhalt und stärke doch dein Volk und Eigentum.

Ach, ach, es ist ein elend Ding

Here is my translation of Laurentii’s first hymn for the Third Sunday in Advent, “Ach, ach, es ist ein elend Ding,” (Evangelia melodica, 1700), a hymn of lament at the world’s offenses and of exhortation to faithfulness. The appointed melody is “Wenn mein Stündlein verhanden ist.”

ALAS, it is a wretched thing

That sons of God’s election

Must oft on earth be suffering

Derision and rejection!

Here prison, scorn, and mockery

The godly man’s reward must be;

’Tis much to be lamented!

2 Saint John must needs be laid in chains

For truthful proclamation;

Yet still the world this way maintains:

He who with lamentation

Recalls the Fall and Joseph’s plight

Cannot avoid the serpent’s bite

Which in his heel he beareth.

3 The ancient Truth no more holds sway;

King Herod’s flatt’ring rabble

Is crowned with praise on earth today,

The hypocrites of Babel

By chains and bonds remain unbound,

And in the harlot’s lap are found—

So far have matters gotten!

4 But thou, my soul, thy Jesus seek,

Who in the world appeareth,

And work with all His children meek

While yet the daylight cheereth;

And though the world imprison thee,

Thy Jesus will thy sunlight be

When in the dark thou dwellest.

5 Since He to blind men giveth sight,

To lepers healing giveth,

Doth make the lame to walk aright,

The soul distraught relieveth,

The poor with boasting hear God’s voice

And in the Gospel sweet rejoice—

So will He save thee also.

6 But be no reed that to and fro

In wind of doctrine trembleth,

Nor futile cloud that swells for show,

And, waterless, dissembleth,

Nor soft-skinned weakling without pow’r,

That falleth in temptation’s hour—

So Jesus will exalt thee.

7 To God be faithful till the grave,

Though bonds and fetters bind thee,

Thy faithful Jesus will thee save

From all the woes that find thee;

The ancient God is living still,

Who in His faithful servants will

Make all His foes a mock’ry.

8 How evil, Lord, the time hath grown,

And grows more evil ever!

Then come, my Savior, and Thine own

From earthly bonds deliver,

Release them from this prison-stall,

And bring them to the Father’s hall

Forevermore to praise Thee.

GERMAN

 Ach, ach, es ist ein elend Ding,

daß Gottes Kinder werden

verworfen, und so gar gering

geachtet sind auf Erden,

der Kerker ist nebst Spott und Hohn

auf dieser Welt der Frommen Lohn,

ist das nicht zu beklagen?

2 Johannes muß gefangen sein,

weil er die Wahrheit sagen,

dies trifft noch diese Stunde ein;

wer den Verfall beklaget,

und um den Schaden Joseph sich

bekümmert, kann dem Fersenstich

der Schlangen nicht entgehen.

3 Die alte Wahrheit gilt nicht mehr,

wer heut Herodes schmeichelt

dich wunderbarlich retten,

es lebet noch der alte Gott,

der seine Feinde macht zu Spott

an seinen treuen Knechten.

8 Nun, Jesu, weil die Zeit ist bös,

und noch wird böser werden,

so komm, mein Heiland, und erlös

die Deinen von der Erden,

führ sie aus diesem Kerker aus,

und bring sie in des Vaters Haus,

daß sie dich ewig preisen.

Der Richter hat sich aufgemacht.

Here is my translation of Laurentius’ second hymn for The Second Sunday in Advent: “Der Richter hat sich aufgemacht” (Evangelia Melodica, 1700), on Luke 21:25–36. The appointed melody is “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit” (“The Day Is Surely Drawing Nigh”).

THE Judge for judgment now doth stand:

O saints of God, prepare ye!

Arise, for midnight is at hand;

The Bridegroom shall not tarry.

Prepare your lamps, that they may glow,

The radiance of your faith forth-show

That God and man may see it.

2 Already now we see the sign,

The vengeful day is ready;

The sun and moon will cease to shine

The stars that now seem steady

Shall soon be falling from the sky,

At this the world in fear shall cry,

When God for vengeance cometh.

3 The feigning sun* will fade and die,

No more his be light be given,

The moon no more ascend the sky,

Nor stars be found in heaven:

Those who with false, deluding light

Kept all the earth in gloom of night

Shall from the Lord meet ruin.

4 Yet ere these things, the mighty host

Of waters shall be rising,

When wicked men will freely boast,

Both life and law despising;

Distress and anguish shall appear,

And God in heaven will hold dear

The death of saints unnumbered.

5 But little time there doth remain

Till Jesus’ coming glorious

With all the splendid heav’nly train.

Which when we see before us,

Then summer cometh, as it must,

And for the freedom of the just

’Twill free the whole creation.

6 Abide, O soul, to God e’er true,

And thou wilt find salvation;

Right soon will He make all things new

And bring thy liberation

From burdens vain that thee opprest,

And take thee to the blessed rest

Prepared for thee in heaven.

7 Make ready, and be not beset

By feasting and carousing;

Let all the blinded faction fret

With care for food and housing,

And hurry to and fro in haste;

But do thou watch, at all times chaste,

With sighs thy God imploring.

8 Then thou, escaping all distress,

Shalt worthy stand, unmoving,

When God shall come in righteousness,

All wickedness reproving.

O blest the flock, wise and discreet,

That goes the Bridegroom out to meet

With lamps of oil unmingled!

9 Lord Jesus, make us ready here

In these last days fast flying;

Let us behold time’s tokens clear

And seek the prize undying

That Thou for us in heav’n hast stored,

And keepest for Thine heirs adored;

Oh, help us, Lord, to conquer!

GERMAN

Der Richter hat sich aufgemacht;

bereitet euch, ihr Frommen;

steht auf, bald ist es Mitternacht,

der Bräutigam wird kommen;

6 Ach Seele, bleibe Gott getreu,

so wirstu selig werden;on

bald wird es alles werden neu,

und du wirst von Beschwerden,

der Eitelkeit befreiet sein,

und zu der Ruhe gehen ein,

die dir noch ist obhanden.

7 Bereite dich, und hüte dich,

vor Fressen und vor Saufen,

laß wegen Sorg der Nahrung sich

mit Rennen und mit Laufen

bekümmern die verblendte Rott,

du aber, wache stets zu Gott,

mit Seufzen und mit Beten.

8 So wirstu aller Not entfliehn

und würdiglich bestehen,

wenn Gott nicht länger wird verziehn,

der Bosheit nachzusehen;

O selig ist der Klugen Schar,

die sich  dem Bräutigam stellt dar,

mit Lampen reiner Öle.

9 Herr Jesu, mach uns selbst bereit,

in diesen letzten Tagen;

laß uns die Zeichen dieser Zeit

wohl merken, und erjagen

das Kleinod, das du beigelegt

und für die Deinen aufgehegt;

Herr, hilf uns überwinden.
