Weil wir sind ausgesandt

Here is my translation of Laurentii’s hymn, “Weil wir sind ausgesandt” (Evangelia melodica, 1700), on the gospel reading for the Fourth Sunday in Advent, applying the material of the account to the task of the preaching office, with somewhat peremptory language. As often the case, Laurentii’s text is better for personal devotion and not for church use. The appointed melody is O Gott du frommer Gott. Since this hymn was not normally rhymed on the odd lines (these being seen as half lines particularly with this melody) the same approach has been followed here, though the lines have been divided in English as commonly found in our hymnals.

 

 

 

BY God we are sent forth

Each to His own position,

And each must give account

Of his appointed mission;

Woe to the man remiss

In this his service due,

Who only lived in show,

Not as a Christian true.

 

2 O soul, whoe’er thou art,

Thy faithfulness show clearly,

And let thy heart obey

The Lord, His will hold dearly!

John, to his office true,

Confessed, nor yet denied,

But said he merely was

The voice of one who cried.

 

3 Be thou God’s instrument,

His tool and channel lowly,

Confessing as thy Lord

Christ Jesus, and Him solely.

’Tis He who does all things,

And all within us proves;

The man is pow’rless, dead,

Unless God’s Spirit moves.

 

4 Oh, follow then His call,

Thy will to His arresting;

For is salvation e’er

A matter for man’s jesting?

Alas! How often hath

Christ at thine entrance knocked,

And thou thine ears hast stopped,

Thy heart to Him hast locked?

 

5 Still may the Lord be heard,

The day of His salvation

Still tarries, still He speaks

By servants in creation;

Though they be but the voice,

The Spirit through the Word

Makes men in pow’r of faith

To call Christ Jesus Lord.

 

6 If thou a teacher art,

And oft in desert dreary

Must lift thy voice to speak,

With sowing seed art weary,

Cry still, and spare thou not,

And lift thy voice yet high’r!

Heed not the raging world

Nor Satan’s wrath and ire.

 

7 Prepare the Lord His way

As by His Word directed,

In others souls as thine

(For that may be detected

By others, which thou mak’st

Thy practice carefully);

Who lives as he believes,

A man of God is He.

 

8 If thou by God art sent

To teach and baptize rightly,

Then follow His command,

And with all sin unsightly

Confront the stubborn crowd;

This is thy task and lot,

For which thou hast been sent

So cry, and spare thou not!

 

9 Yea, let each man persist

In sighing and beseeching,

For Jesus without doubt

Is with us in our teaching.

He has a plan to work;

Woe to all those who dare,

Although they know Him not,

His name themselves to bear!

 

10 How many say His name,

Yet know Him not, and perish!

Wherefore, O Christ, today

Thy righteous offspring cherish

Who their unworthiness

To Thine acclaim confess;

Sustain Thine heritage,

Thy Church confirm and bless!

1 Weil wir sind ausgesandt von Gott in dieses Leben,

So muß man Rechenschaft von der Gesandtschaft geben;

Weh dem, der nicht getreu im Dienst gewesen ist,

und nur zum Schein gelebt, nicht aber als ein Christ. 

2 Ach Seele, wer du bist, laß deine Treu erblicken,

und laß dein Herze sich vor deinem Jesu bücken,

Johannes war getreu im Amt, doch spricht er frei,

daß er die Stimme nur des großen Rufers sei.

3 Ja, du bist nichtes, als ein Werkzeug bloß zu nennen,

das Jesum muß allein für seinen Herrn erkennen,

er ist der alles tut, und alles in uns legt,

der Mensch ist stumm und tot, wenn ihn sein Geist nicht regt.

4 Ach, folge seinem Ruf, und gib Gehör im Herzen,

weil mit der Seligkeit sich wahrlich nicht läßt scherzen,

ach, ach! wie mannigmal hat Jesus angeklopft,

allein wie oft hast du Herz, Ohr und Mund verstopft.

5 Noch ist der Tag des Heils, noch kannst du Jesum hören,

noch hört man ihn, zum Heil, in seinen Dienern lehren,

Sind sie die Stimme nur, so wirke doch der Geist,

Daß man in Glaubenskraft ihn einen Herren heißt.

6 Lebst du im Lehrestand, und mußtr in Wüsteneien

die Stimm erheben oft und guten Samen streuen,

so ruf und schone nicht, erhebe deine Stimm,

und achte nichte die Welt, noch Satans Wut und Grimm.

7 Bereit dem Herrn den Weg, wie sein Wort vorgeschrieben,

in andern und in dir; denn was du selbst wirst üben,

das kannst du nach der Kraft den Seelen zeigen an;

wer lebet wie er glaubt, das ist ein Gottes Mann.

8 Bist du von Gott gesandt zu lehren und zu taufen,

so tu es auf Befehl, und stell dem rohen Haufen

den Sündengreuel vor; denn dies ist deine Pflicht,

dazu bist du gesandt, drum ruf und schone nicht.

9 Ja, jeder halt jetzt an mit Seufzen und mit Beten,

weil Jesus ganz gewiß ist unter uns getereten,

er hat ein Neues vor: weh dem, der ihn nicht kennt,

und doch sich sonder Scheu von seinem Namen nennt.

10 Wie mancher nennet ihn, und kennt nicht seinen Namen;

drum Jesu Christ, erhalt heut den gerechten Samen,

die ihr Unwürdigkeit erkennen, dir zum Ruhm;

erhalt und stärke doch dein Volk und Eigentum.
