Ein Gott, nur ein Gott ist

 Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ein Gott, nur ein Gott ist” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for  the Feast of the Holy Trinity, a brief paraphrase of the Athanasian Creed.

ONE God there is alone
By Christians all believèd
Whoever would be saved,
Must keep this faith receivèd.
God, by His own true Word
Hath made it known to us,
So that our faith cannot
Err or mistake Him thus.

2 Since God is only One,
One substance ever-blessed,
This too must be as true
Believèd and confessèd,
That God, in substance One,
In Persons yet is Three:
The Father and the Son
And Holy Ghost is He.

3 The Father then is God,
God is the Son, our Brother;
The Spirit too is God
One with the Son and Father
In might and glory, yet
There are not three gods, no,
In substance God is One,
As by His Word we know.

4 The Father hath the Son
Begot; He is no creature;
The Son begotten is
Out of His Father’s nature;
The Spirit from the Son
As from the Father goes,
This is the difference
Which God in Person shows.

5 Among the Persons else
No difference obtaineth;
One in eternity,
With equal pow’r Each reigneth,
The same in pow’r and might,
In glory‿and majesty,
All equal and alike
In every property.

6 Yet God the Son came down
Into His own creation,
And human flesh and blood
Took in His incarnation.
The Father is not man,
Nor is the Spirit man;
The Son, the God-Man, doth
Alone both natures span.

7 In faith a Christian must
This myst’ry trust, if yonder
In heaven he would live
And God behold in wonder.
There shall be shown to us
And we shall freely see
How God, in substance One,
Is yet in persons Three.

8 May we meanwhile to Him
In all our life and living
For this great knowledge be
Thanks, praise, and glory giving.
May God the Father, Son,
And Holy Spirit be
Adored both here in time
And there eternally!

GERMAN

Ein Gott, nur ein Gott ist,
an den wir Christen gläuben.
Wer selig werden will,
muß bei dem Glauben bleiben.
Durch sein selbsteigen Wort
hats Gott uns kund gethan,
daß unser Glaube so
unmöglich irren kann.

2 Ist aber Got nur Eins
dem Wesen nach zu nennen,
so müßen wir doch auch
dies gläuben und bekennen,
daß Gott ein einger Gott
in drei Personen heißt:
Der Vater, und der Sohn,
und dan der heilge Geist.

3 So ist der Vater Gott;
Gott ist in gleichem Throne
der Sohn; Gott ist der Geist,
gleich Vater und dem Sohne.
Und doch sind darum nicht
drei Götter an der Zahl.
Ein Gott dem Wesen nach
versteht sich allemal.

4 Der Vater zeugt den Sohn,
(als wirs im Worte lesen);
der Sohn der wird gezeugt
aus seines Vaters Wesen;
vom Vater und vom Sohn
geht aus der Heilge Geist.
Das ist der Unterscheid,
der sich personlich weist.

5 Kein Unterscheid ist sonst,
der zwischen ihnen wäre.
Gleich ist die Kraft und Machte;
gleich ist Gewalt und Reich.
An aller Eigenschaft
is alles Eins und Gleich.

6 Jedoch ist Gott der Sohn
in diese Welt gekommen,
und hat da menschlich Fleisch
und Blut an sich genommen.
Nicht ist der Vater Mensch;
nicht Mensch der Heilge Geist;
der SOhn nur ists, der GOtt
und Mensch zusammen heißt.

7 Im Glauben muß ein Christ
auf dies Geheimnis trauen,
wenn er Gott selber will
in jenem Leben schauen.
Dort wirds uns offenbar,
und da erkennt man frei,
wie Gott im Wesen Eins,
Drei in Personen sei.

8 Indessen wollen wir
in unserm ganzen Leben
ihm Lob und Ruhm und Dank
vor das Erkenntnis geben.
Gott Vater und Gott Sohn
und auch Gott Heilger Geist
sei hier in Zeit und dort
in Ewigkeit gepreist!
