Gottseligkeit is kein Gewerbe

Here is my translation of the Christian Life (Godliness) hymn, “Gottseligkeit is kein Gewerbe” (Valentin Ernst Löscher, d. 1749) based on 1 Tim. 6:5, in GGELB #466 with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” It is absent from Fischer’s lexicon. I find it in Das Andächtig-Singende Evangelische Zion (Zwickau, 1736), no. 771, with ascription “D. V. E. Löscher.”

 

TRUE godliness, says Scripture clearly,
Is not a thing of worldly gain;
It holds the better part most dearly
And doth all other things disdain;
The pure and spotless Word it loves
Above all earthly treasure-troves.

2 True godliness no ostentation
Pursues, nor seeks the praise of men,
Nor great renown, nor acclamation,
Nor doth it wit and rev’rence feign.
It is content its Maker knows
And sees the heart in chamber close.

3 True godliness no sect will follow;
In doctrine true it holdeth sure,
Though all the world in error wallow,
Its faith continues clean and pure.
In Jesus’ body it abides,
Though poor He seem, and there resides.

4 True godliness is not a dealing
Of our old Adam’s sinful will;
God gives new pow’r and selfless feeling,
That we His pleasure may fulfill,
And bear men’s burdens willingly,
And all things to all people be.

5 True godliness is no endeavor
That springs from melancholy drear;
’Tis confident, and watcheth ever
Lest any mournful sense appear;
Since God, joy’s Maker, it sustains,
O’er death and world it vict’ry gains.

6 True godliness a crown comprises
That doth our heartfelt faith adorn;
Oh, God! Grant me the pow’r that rises,
In Christ Thy Son, and Spirit-borne,
That I hereafter may possess
The glorious crown of righteousness!

Gottseligkeit ist kein Gewerbe,
das wissen wir aus Gottes Wort;
sie bleibt beim rechten Theil und Erbe
und weiset alles andre fort;
sie ist dem reinen Worte hold,
und liebt es für das feinste Gold.

2 Gottseligkeit ist kein Gepränge,
sie suchet nicht der Menschen Preis,
den großen Schein, des Beifalls Menge,
sie thut nicht übrig fromm und weis.
Ihr Trost ist der: Gott sieht hinein
ins Herz, und ins Schlafkämmerlein.

3 Gottseligkeit macht keine Sekte,
sie bleibet bei der wahren Lehr,
und wenn sich alle Welt befleckte,
so geht sie rein im Glauben her;
bei Christi Leib, so arm er sei,
hält sie beständig und getreu.

4 Gottseligkeit ist kein Geschäfte
des angebornen Eigensinns.
Gott gibt ihr neue Geisteskräfte,
sie sagt nicht: So will ich; ich bins.
Das macht, sie träget fremde Bürd,
und allen gerne Alles wird.

5 Gottseligkeit ist keine Sache,
die von Melancholei herrührt.
Sie ist getrost, hält gute Wache,
daß man den Trauergeist nicht spürt,
weil sie der Freuden-Gott erhält,
so siegt sie über Tod und Welt.

6 Gottseligkeit ist eine Krone,
so hier der wahre Glaube schafft;
ach Gott! gib mir in deinem Sohne
durch deinen Geist die rechte Kraft,
daß ich erlange nach der Zeit
die Krone der Gerechtigkeit.
