Zwei Ort, o Mensch! hast du vor dir

Here is my translation of the Eternity/Last Things/Damnation hymn, “Zwei Ort, o Mensch! hast du vor dir” (Johann Christian Arnschwanger, d. 1696), in GGELB #527 with melody assignment “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.” It first appears in the author’s Neue Geistliche Lieder (1659) with title “Of the terrible torment of hell wherein the damned shall suffer in all their limbs with which they sinned.” Below I include a looser translation from Songs of Prayer and Praise (1919), probably translated from the form found in Zionsharfe, with more Christological and general Christian doctrine, which may well be considered a different hymn. With the German I also note in brackets Knapp’s substantial variants.

 

TWO places, mortal, thee await,
While thou on earth yet livest,
Which lie beyond death’s gloomy gate,
And one thou then receivest
As soon as here thy time is done,
According as thou choosest one,
And wilt for thee select.

2 One is the place of heav’nly bliss,
Where God with His resideth.
The other hell’s dread portal is,
Where sins’ desert betideth.
In one ’tis well, in th’other, ill.
This full of pain, that calm and still,
There smiles abound, here weeping.

3 O hell, alas! O dreadful word!
Naught else it signifieth
Than endless misery incurred,
Which torment e’er supplieth
To those who fought God to the last,
The devils, who from heav’n were cast,
And all malicious sinners.

4 If there is any fearful sound,
Or any word of sadness,
If mortal’s joy can e’er be drowned
And grief destroy his gladness,
If there is any cause of pain
If aught makes men for surcease strain,
In hell it surely waiteth.

5 The mortals who shall enter there
Eternal pain inherit,
And unbeforeknown torment bear
In body, soul, and spirit,
The worm that never groweth old,
The fire that never groweth cold.
He constantly shall suffer.

6 The anguish that his conscience wracks,
The heartache that aggrieves him
To punish all his wicked acts
Unnumbered sorrows gives him.
All that he ever did and said
Consumes his heart with fear and dread,
His sinful soul afflicting.

7 The eyes that sought pomposity,
The whorish ears and daring,
The lips that lied so brazenly
The tongue e’er falsely swearing,
The mouth that blasphemies expressed,
The hand that slew and never blest,
The feet in vices treading:

8 Yea, every member, one and all,
That practiced such transgression
By curse and cursèd torment shall
Be grieved without cessation,
So that which here vain joy hath known
Shall there forevermore atone
With all the greater heartache.

9 The devil hideous doth repel
The eye; the lamentation
Resounding through the holes of hell
Offends the ear’s sensation;
The lying mouth is fed with gall,
The putrid smell pervadeth all
Of sulphrous pitch forever.

10 Then ponder, mortal, well thy lot,
What yonder shall confront thee!
Think what we ought to do or not,
And live the life more godly.
Rule us, O God, at every hour,
To live aright, and by Thy pow’r
To flee infernal sorrow.

Two ends, O man, on thee await,
Two ways are open only,
One leading up to heaven’s door,
Is steep and strait and stony;
The other is a jolly road,
But yet devoid of peace with God,
And leads unto destruction.

2 So choose, O man, while yet ’tis time,
Spurn not God’s gracious offer,
But choose the strait and narrow way,
Else judgment ye will suffer.
The narrow way leads to the light,
And to the realm of pure delight,
Fear not its self denial.

3 For if ye keep the broader way,
Rejecting true instruction,
In ign’rance serving lusts and sin,
’Twill lead thee to destruction.
Woe unto thee if thou abide
In sin and lusts and haughty pride,
And unbelieving darkness.

4 O turn, whoever ye may be,
Who hears this hymn appealing,
Today is still the day of grace,
Repentant sinners healing.
Turn quickly—thou hast wandered far,
The door of grace is still ajar,
O enter, ere it closes.

5 If ye would find the way of life,
Search in the Scriptures ever,
Thru Jesus’ death, they show the way,
To life which endeth never.
See! Christ was nailed upon the tree,
To shed His precious blood for thee,
FOr all thy sins atoning.

6 Would ye receive the gift of grace,
Which Jesus freely preaches,
Then ye must follow in His steps,
Believing what He teaches.
The carnal mind be crucified,
And all thy sinful lust and pride,
Upon that cross shall perish.

7 Repenting, ye shall die to sin,
And being dead, be buried;
Be baptized in His death with Him,
Who vict’ry from death carried.
Who dies with Christ, shall with Him live,
To Him will Christ, the Saviour, give
Eternal life in heaven.

8 The way at first may seem too hard,
Too steep and all too narrow,
But further on it bringeth peace,
Its end is bliss and glory.
Who breaketh thru the narrow gate,
Will come into a peaceful state,
And goes his way rejoicing.

9 The broader way, at first it seems,
A way thru greenest pastures,
But farther on great dangers lurk,
It ends in dark disaster.
In righteous anger God will cast
Into His judgmenet then at last,
The unrepentant sinner.

10 Therefore, O man, consider well,
The end that stands before thee,
And choose the good, or choose the ill,
Whichever seems more worthy.
Then happy who with Christ, the Lord,
Shall stand in peace and in accord,
Woe to the unbeliever.

Zwei Ort, o Mensch! hast du vor dir,
dieweil du lebst auf Erden;
die nach dem Tode stehen für […stehn dir nach dem Tode für,
Und wird dir eines werden […einer wird dir werden;
sobald du deine Zeit beschließt […vollbracht,

2. Eins ist des Himmels Freudenort, [Der eine ist der F.,
da Gott mit seinen wohnet: Wo Gott und Christus wohnet;

3. O Hölle! welch ein Wort ist das […bist du!

und was für Qual bereitet [Der Sündern ist be reitet,
den Feinden Gottes insgemein [Wo Gottes Feinde insgemein

4 Ist etwas überall bewußt,
das schrecklich anzuhören:

6 Die Angst, die sein Gewissen hat,
die Furcht in seinem Herzen, [Der Fluch in seinem Herzen,
zur Straf für manche Frevelthat, [Die Straf für alle Frevelthat
macht ihm viel tausend Schmerzen;
was er gethan hat und gesagt […gethan und je gesagt,
das kommt ihm vor, das nagt und plagt
die sündenvolle Seele.

7 Die Augen, die nach Pracht geschaut,
die geile Hurenohren, […zuchtlos frechen Ohren,
und die dem Lügenmaul getraut; [Die Stirn, die stolz auf sich getraut,
die Zung, die falsch geschworen,
der Mund, der Lästerung geredt; […gebar,
die Hand, die freventlich getödt; […der Fuß, so greulich war:
die lasterhafte Füsse, [Sie werden drunten brennen.

8 Ja, alle Glieder insgemein,
die sich in Sünden üben,
wird künftig die verfluchte Pein […Fluch und Qual und Pein
in Ewigkeit betrüben,
daß sie die jetzt gesuchte Freud, [Da wird die hier gesuchte Freud
mit desto grösserm Hertzenleid [In desto größres Herzeleid

9 Es wird der Teufel ungestalt,
die Augen, und durch Klagen,
das in der Höllen wiederhallt,
die Ohren heftig plagen;
der Lügenmund trinkt Gallentrank;
der scharfe Schwefelpechgesstank
ist dem Geruch zuwider.

10 O Mensch! darum erkenne wohl [Darum, o Mensch, e. w.
was dort sich wird begeben!
Denk, was man thun und lassen soll,
Und führ ein Christlich Leben […ändre bald dein Leben!
O Gott, regier uns allezeit, […alt und jung,
daß wir recht thun, und dort dem Leid […durch Jesu Heiligung
entfliehen in der Höllen. [Entfliehn dem Leid der Hölle!
