Wer nicht sitzt im Gottlosen Rath

Here is my translation of the Psalm paraphrase “Wer nicht sitzt im Gottlosen Rath” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), for which the melody “Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst,” is normally assigned.

 

WHO heeds not what th’ ungodly say,
Nor standeth in the sinner’s way,
Nor walketh in the scoffer’s van,
He is a truly blessed man.

2 God’s Word is his delight and joy,
He holds it as his bastion high,
Keeps it in heart and thought and sight,
And speaks of it both day and night.

3 A goodly tree he doth appear,
Which, planted by the waters clear,
Brings forth his fruit in season due,
His leaves are ever green and new.

4 Whate’er he doeth prospers well,
God’s blessings on his household dwell;
Not so are the ungodly race,
Which like the chaff the wind doth chase.

5 When God a reck’ning will demand,
They shall not in the judgment stand;
Who sin and doctrine false adore
Have in God’s church a place no more.

6 The way of righteous men God knows,
He shelters it from all their foes;
The way in which the vile delight,
Despised by God, shall perish quite.

1  Wer nicht ſitzt im Gottloſen Rath/
und tritt nicht auff der Sünder Pfad/
kömpt auch nicht auff der Spötter Plan/
der iſt wohl ein recht ſelig Mann.

2  Sein Luſt und Freud iſt GOttes Wort/
das hält er für ſein höchſten Hort/
Bewahrts im Hertzn und denck ihm nach/
redt von demſelben Nacht und Tag.

3  Gleich wie ein Baum von guter Art/
der am Waſſer gepflantzet ward/
Bringt er zu rechter Zeit ſein' Frücht/
die Blätter ſein verwelcken nicht.

4  Was er anfeht/ ihm wohl geredt,
weil er in GOttes Segen ſteht.
Nicht alſo ſind gottloſe Leut/
ſondern wie Spreu vom Wind verſtreut.

5  Kömpt über ſie GOtts ſtreng Gericht/
können ſie drum beſtehen nicht.
Wer Sünde liebt und falſche Lehr/
kein Platz in Gottes Gmein hat mehr.

6  Der Frommen Thun iſt GOtt bekannt/
GOtt hälts in Hut und bringts in Stand:
Der Weg/ den der Gottloß erkorn/
taug nichts für GOtt/ iſt gar verlohrn.
