Liebster Jesu, ich erschein

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Liebster Jesu, ich erschein” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica for Rogate, the first of two hymns.

Mel. Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier.

DEAREST Father, I appear,
And would gladly come before Thee!
To my faithful pray’r give ear,
I in Jesus’ name implore Thee.
Since my Jesus me commanded
Thus to ask with spirit candid.

2 Thou Thyself dost bid me pray
And wilt grant me the receiving
As and what Thy Word doth say;
When in heart I here am grieving,
And my sinful passions mourning,
Hear, appear, my prayer adorning!

3 Hear in Jesus’ name on high,
Father dear, my supplication,
That my faith may multiply,
While this earthly habitation
I must bear, and grant in sorrow
Of Thy boundless joy to borrow.

4 Thus let joy within my heart
Perfect be, and full forever,
And Thy grace's light impart
Unto every true believer
Sweet refreshment, blessed leading
In the strife of faith and pleading

5 What these earthly members need
Thou wilt give me in addition,
Child and wife and servants feed
And sustain at faith's petition.
Let us look first up to heaven
Where the greatest gift is given!

6 Let us so Thy realm pursue
And Thy righteousness seek ever,
That made like Thine image new,
We may praise but Christ the Savior
Who for us hath death sustainèd
And the Life for us obtainèd:

7 Till we there our treasure find
Which our soul entire reneweth,
And the trusting heart and mind
With that heav’nly joy imbueth,
Till the Lord His presence lighteth
In us, and with us uniteth.

8 Since the Father loveth us,
He will pray in us with power,
So that all who seek Him thus
Will find blessings every hour,
And perceive that Christ our Brother
Came forth from the heav’nly Father.

9 Yea, as Jesus came to men
From the Father our Defender,
And revealed himself again
With triumphant vict’ry-splendor,
So at last we, like our Brother,
Shall be going to the Father.

10 Ah, my Father, let me go
From the world, to Thee ascending!
Let me not stand still below,
But, to things above attending,
Come at last and there endeavor,
Thy pure name to praise forever!

GERMAN

Liebster Vater, ich erschein
und will mich zu dir erheben.
Laß im Namen Jesu sein
mein Gebeth erhört im Leben
weil mir Jesus unverhohlen
hat zu Beten so befohlen.

2 Der du selber bitten heißt,
wirst auch geben, daß ich nehme,
wie und was dein Wort verheißt,
wenn ich mich im Herzen gräme,
und die Sündenlust beweine,
so erhöre und erscheine.

3 Ja im Namen Jesu hör,
liebster Vater, was ich bitte,
daß mein Glaube sich vermehr,
solang ich noch diese Hütte
tragen muß, so gib im Leiden
überschwinglich deine Freuden.

4 Daß die Freude möge sein
in dem Herzen vollenkommen
und dein Gnadenlicht und Schein
mich und alle wahre Frommen
süß erquick und selig leite
in dem Glaubens-kampf und Streite.

5 Was bedarf der arme Leib,
das wirst du im Zufall geben
und was Kind, Gesind und Weib
nötig haben zu dem Leben;
laß uns trachten erst nach droben,
da das größte aufgehoben.

6 Laß uns stets nach deinem Reich
und Gerechtigkeit so trachten,
daß wir deinem Bilde gleich
werden, und allein hoch achten
Jesum, der für uns gestorben,
und das Leben uns erworben.

7 Bis wir finden unsern Schatz,
der das ganze Herz erneuet,
und die Freude finde Platz,
welche Seel und Geist erfreuet
bis sich Jesus offenbaret
in uns, und sich mit uns pähret.

8 Dann, weil uns der Vater liebt,
wird er in uns kräftig bethen
daß der Himmel alles giebt
denen, die zum Vater treten,
daß wir spüren nauch Verlangen,
daß er von Gott ausgegangen.

9 Ja wie Jesus in die Welt
von dem Vater ausgegangen
und sich wiederdargestellt,
mit Triumpf und SIegesprangen,
so wird endlich auch geschehen
daß wir zu dem Vater gehen.

10 Ach mein Vater, laßt mich gehn
aus der Welt, zu dir erhoben,
laß mich nimmer stille stehn
sondern suchen, was dort oben
da ich deinen heilgen Namen
ewig werde preisen. Amen.

Ach! sieh doch großer Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ach! sieh doch großer Gott” (B. Schmolck, 1712), from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, second series, for Rogate, with title, ‘Joshua, the image of a devout suppliant” (Josua das Bild eines andächtigen Beters). The melody, from Löwenstern’s hymn on Psalm 121, is an unusual meter, with rhymes on the second and fifth lines, and fourth and seventh lines.

Mel.: Wenn ich in Angst und Noth.

AH, gracious God, behold
 Thy child by griefs waylaid,
Who comes before Thy face
 With sigh and supplication,
Because it finds no aid
Except at this Thy throne,
 O Lord of all creation!

2 Sun, stand thou still, I pray,
 My Christ, Thy help afford
At this my earnest plea,
 And with Thy child be present;
Through Thine assistance, Lord,
In grace for me fulfill
 My sigh and pray’r incessant

3 Oh, grant that this my pray’r
 May truly faithful be,
And that but on Thy name
I may the same be grounding,
That this my cry to Thee
May reach the Father’s ear
 And sweetly there be sounding.

4 The Spirit of true pray’r
 let govern me alway
To come before Thy throne
 Devoutly to implore Thee,
Lest I should hear Thee say:
Thou nothing hitherto
Hast asked Me to do for thee.

5 If I, Lord, am by Thee
 And by Thy Spirit ruled,
Thou wilt stand still for me,
 And come, my needs addressing;
My soul feels (nor is fooled)
Thy hearing, help, and cheer
 And, thousandfold, Thy blessing.

6 My Jesus, now I see
 Thy helpful standing-still;
What I have asked, Thou wilt
 In Thy dear name be giving;
To hear me is Thy will,
Nor wilt Thou pass me by
While on this earth I’m living.

7 Already I can sense
 Within my kindled breast,
That at my faithful pray’r,
I have but by Thy favor,
Full joy, delight, and rest,
Which I am granted by
 Thy standing still, dear Savior!

8 And as, at his request,
 Good Joshua of old
Himself saw such a day
 Of glorious disposition,
By faithful pray’r and bold,
Let it be so with me
 At this my fond petition!

9 Oh, yes, the day shall come
When eyes with joy shall see
The pleasant Brightness of
The love of God Thy Father,
For since we have loved Thee,
He too will show us love
Who joy to call Thee Brother.

10 Thou leadest us Thyself
 More deeply Thee to know,
How from the Father Thou
  Didst come, His will fulfilling,
And by the way of woe
Through death, to Him return’st,
 The Father’s longing stilling.

11 Now let Thy Spirit good
 In true faith lighten me,
That I may know Thee, Lord,
 Thy rising and Thy going;
And, full of faith, may Thee
Name openly, and not
 By proverbs and unknowing.

12 Now therefore, let my pray’r,
O Lord, in heav’n be heard,
And when in Thy dear name
I shall for help be crying
As taught me in Thy Word,
Then for my comfort be
 Thy “Yea, Amen,” supplying!

GERMAN

Ach! sieh doch großer Gott,
 hier steht dein armes Kind,
und sucht dein Angesicht
 mit Seufzen und mit Beten;
weil es nicht Hülfe findt,
wenn es nicht kommt zu dir
 vor deinen Thron getreten.

2 O! Sonne stehe doch,
 die du mein Jesus bist,
auf mein Gebet und Flehn
 bei deinem Kinde stille;
durch deine Hülf, Herr Christ,
mein Seufzen und mein Schrein
 mir gnädiglich erfülle.

3 O! laß doch mein Gebet
 rechtschaffen gläubig sein,
und selbiges mich nur
 auf deinen Namen gründen,
damit ich auf mein Schrein
auch die Erhörung mag
 bei deinem Vater finden.

4 Regier mich allezeit,
 durch des Gebetes Geist,
vor deinen Gnadenthron
 in Andacht hin zu treten;
damit es niemals heißt:
Bisher hast du von mir
 gar nichts vor dich gebeten.

5 Werd ich nun Herr von dir
 und deinem Geist regiert,
so werd ich dich zur Hülf
 und Stillestehn bewegen;
O! meine Seele spürt
Erhörung, Hülf und Trost,
 und tausendfachten Segen.

6 Ich seh, mein Jesu, schon
 dein hülfreich Stillestehn,
du willst mir, was ich bath
 in deinem Namen, geben,
und nicht vorüber gehn,
und ohn Erhörung mich
 auf Erden lassen leben.

7 O! ich empfinde schon
 in der entbrannten Brust,
da ich auf mein Gebet,
 Herr, von dir nehmen können,
vollkommen Freud und Lust,
die mir dein Stillestehn,
 mein Heiland, wollen gönnen.

8 Und wie auf sein Gebet
 der fromme Josua
hat einen solchen Tag,
 der herrlich war gesehen,
weil es mit Ernst geschah,
so laß dies auch bei mir
 auf mein Gebet geschehen.

9 O! ja der Tag erfolgt,
 indem uns zeiget sich
der angenehme Glanz
 von deines Vaters Liebe,
denn weil wir lieben dich,
so denkt dein Vater auch,
 wie er das Lieben übe.

10 Du führest uns ja selbst
 zu viel Erkenntnis an,
daß du in diese Welt
 vom Vater ausgegangen,
und auf der Todesbahn
auch wieder zu ihm gehst,
 und stillest sein Verlangen.

11 Dein guter Geist erleucht
 im wahren Glauben mich,
daß ich, Herr Jesu, dich
 und deinen Ausgang kenne,
und daß nun weiter ich
dich glaubensvoll heraus,
 und nicht durchs Sprichwort nenne.

12 So laß nun mein Gebet,
 o Herr, erhöret sein,
und wenn ich auf dein Wort
 in deinem theuren Namen

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Vater unser im Himmelreich, / wir rufen zu dir allzugleich” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, for Rogate Sunday, a pastiche and parodia of Luther’s “Vater unser im Himmelreich,” in which each stanza retains the first line (or two) of the original. I have mostly used familiar language for these lines, but also departed from the usual “Winkworth, alt.” in some places.

Mel.: Vater unser im Himmelreich.

OUR Father Thou in heav’n! To Thee
We all cry out in unity:
Hear us upon Thy gracious throne
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son,
Since in Thy faithful wisdom Thou
Hast bidden us in pray’r to bow.

2 Thy name be hallowed! For if we
Maintain Thy Word in purity,
And so upon Thy ways proceed,
It shall be for our good indeed;
Oh, grant without hypocrisy
Our life may as our doctrine be.

3 Thy kingdom come-now in this age,
Till comes the glorious heritage,
For which Thy pow’r doth us maintain,
And we that glorious kingdom gain.
Thy Spirit for our rule provide,
And unto every good to guide.

4 Thy will be done on earth, Lord God,
As ’tis in heav’n, where saints Thee laud.
Our own will never let be done,
When we for such things seek and run
Which are against Thy gracious will,
And serve for our eternal ill.

5 Give us this day our daily bread!
Let us be not with sorrows fed,
From worry and distress us keep,
Which many rob of health and sleep;
Who trusts in Thee will surely see
Thy hand sustains us bounteously.

6 Forgive us our trespasses, Lord!
On whom is greater blessing poured
Than he whom sin condemneth not.
Oh, grant us truly, as we ought,
In manner merciful to live,
And neighbors gladly to forgive!

7 Into temptation lead us not.
Thou knowest how the foe doth plot
And seek to take us cunningly;
To fight him and victorious be—
This but Thy mighty Word can do:
Our faith therefore make strong and true.

8 Deliver us from evils all!
The wicked world doth us appall.
Blest is the saint who now doth sleep
And there with Thee his rest may keep!
Come, dearest God, when pleaseth Thee,
And take us thither blessedly.

9 Amen, that is, so let it be!
Thy Word doth promise certainly
What for Thy praise and glory is,
And our salvation, so that this
Through Jesus Christ is heard in heav’n,
And finds a gracious Yea, Amen!

GERMAN
Vater unser im Himmelreich,
wir rufen zu dir allzugleich,
erhör uns auf dem Gnadenthron,
durch Jesum Christum deinen Sohn;
als der uns selbst durch treuen Rath
das Beten anbefohlen hat.

2 Geheiligt werd der Name dein.
Behalten wir dein Wort nur rein,
auf deinen Wegen dazugehn,
so wird es selig um uns stehn.
Ach gieb, daß ohne Heuchelei
das Leben, wie die Lehre sei.

3 Es komm dein Reich zu dieser Zeit,
bis sich das Reich der Herrlichkeit,
wozu uns deine Macht bewahrt,
in jenem Leben offenbart.
Gieb deinen Geist, der uns regiert,
und uns zu allen Guten führt.

4 Dein Will gescheh, Herr Gott, zugleich
auf ERden wie im Himmelreich.
Laß unsern Willen nie geschehn,
wenn wir nach solchen Dingen sehn,
die nicht nach deinem Willen gehn,
und unserm Heil entgegen stehn.

5 Gieb uns heut unser täglich Brot.
Bewahr uns auch für aller Noth,
die sonst die Nahrungssorge macht,
die manchen um sein Heil gebracht.
Wer dir vertrauet, der erfährt,
daß deine Hand uns reichlich nährt.

6 All unser Schuld vergieb uns, Herr.
Wer ist auf Erden seliger,
als den die Sünde nicht verdammt?
ach gieb nur, daß wir insgesamt
von HErzen auch versöhnlich sein,
und unserm Nächsten gern verzeihn.

7 Führ uns, Herr, in Versuchung nicht,
du weißt, wie uns der Bösewicht,
der Teufel pfleget nachzugehn:
ihm sieghaft nun zu widerstehn,
so thuts dein mächtig Wort allein,
da laß uns stark im Glauben sein.

8 Von allem Übel uns erlös.
Die Welt ist arg und bleibet bös.
Wohl dem, der eingeschlafen ist,
und dort der Ruh bei dir genießt!
Komm, lieber Gott, wenn dirs gefällt,
und nimm uns selig aus der Welt.

9 Amen, das ist, es werde wahr,
dein Wort versprichts, und machets klar,
was dir zu Preis und Ruhm gedeiht,
und uns zu Heil und Seligkeit,
daß dies bei dir durch Jesum Christ
ein gnädig Ja und Amen ist.

Mein lieber Gott, gewähre

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mein lieber Gott, gewähre” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Rogate Sunday.

Mel.: Nun ruhen alle Wälder.

GRANT, Maker, I implore Thee,
The wish I lay before Thee,
Already known to Thee!
Yet I will ask no treasure
But what will give Thee pleasure
And to my soul’s advantage be.

2 Jesus, Thy Son, hath told me
That I should ask Thee boldly
Since Thou dost love Thine own,
And in His name whatever
They ask Thee, Thou wilt never
Deny them, but in grace condone.

3 Thus I implore each morrow,
Let me all cross and sorrow
With patience bear and face,
And let it soon be ended,
With comfort full attended
From Thy paternal hand of grace.

4 If earthly wealth Thou grant me,
And in a mansion plant me
With riches, wealth, and fame,
Let not my senses fool me,
But in my spirit rule me,
Lest greed and pride bring me to shame.

5 Thy strength from heaven giving,
Make faith alert and living
Through works prepared by Thee;
Help it, for good contending,
To conquer foes offending,
And in my weakness help Thou me.

6 When death at last shall take me,
With all God’s children make me
Th’ inheritance to share;
Thy Son for me this gainèd,
When He my death sustainèd,
That I may blessed be fore’er.

7 Then, Abba, dearest Father,
My Help above all other,
Who hast all good conferred:
In Jesus’ name I merely
Will say Amen sincerely,
And know for sure that I am heard.

GERMAN

Mein lieber Gott, gewähre,
was ich von dir begehre,
das du schon alles weißt.
Doch will ich nichts in allen,
als was dein Wohlgefallen,
und meiner Seelen Bestes heißt.

2 Mein Jesus hats befohlen,
ich soll nur freudig holen,
weil du die Deinen liebst,
und balt in seinem Namen,
mit Gnade, Ja und Amen,
was sie von dir gebeten, giebst.

3 Ich bitte dann von Herzen:
in allem Kreuz und Schmerzen,
verleihe nur Geduld.
Und gieb, daß sich das Ende
mit vollem Troste wende
durch deine Vater-hand und Huld.

4 Und sollt ich auf der Erden,
ein Kind des Glückes werden,
durch Ehre, Geld und Guth;
so laß michs nicht bethören,
noch meine Sinnen kehren
auf Hoffart, Geiz und Übermuth.

5 Ach! nur den Glauben stärke,
daß es durch gute Werke
in mir lebendig sei.
Und findet er zu kämpfen,
so hilf die Feinde dämpfen,
und stehe meiner Schwachheit bei.

6 Und wenn ich endlich sterbe,
so räume mir das Erbe
der Kinder Gottes ein.
Dein Kind hat mirs erworben,
da er für mich gestorben.
Drum werd ich ewig selig sein.

7 Nun, Abba, lieber Vater,
mein Helfer und Berather,
der alles Guts beschert,
in meines Jesu Namen,
sprech ich ein herzlich Amen,
und weis gewiß, ich bin erhört.

Wahrlich, wahrlich, sprach Christ der Herr

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wahrlich, wahrlich, sprach Christ der Herr” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sontags-Evangelia for Rogate Sunday, from John 16. For singing, Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort.

CHRIST Jesus said: “Amen, Amen,
If ye shall ask the God of heav’n,
Who is My Father, in My name,
Ye shall not then be put to shame.

2 “That shall He truly give to you;
Through Me ye asked not hitherto.
Ask freely then, with fearless breast,
And have in full your glad request.

3 “Full many things to you I’ve told
In proverbs and examples rolled,
But now the time is coming, when
I’ll speak to you in manner plain.

4
“In My name shall ye ask and pray
The Father what ye will that day,
Then shall ye have no need that I
Should to the Father for you sigh.

5
“Dear friends, because ye have loved Me,
Know this therefore with certainty,
That He, My Father, loveth you,
As doth his child a father true.

6
“But ye, because ye have believed
I came from God, be not aggrieved!
No worldly ill shall you o’ertake,
My Father will not you forsake.”

7 Lord, who hast bought us by Thy blood,
We thank Thee for this comfort good,
That what we ask in Thy name here,
Is heard before the Father’s ear.

Here is my translation of the prayer hymn, “Mein Abba kommt vor deinen Thron” (Benjamin Schmolck, d. 1737), in GGELB #233 with melody assignment “Vater unser im Himmelreich.” I also find it in ELGB 2nd ed. (Buffalo Synod), #278. It first appears in the author’s Lustiger Sabbath (1712) with title “XLVI. The Key to Heaven and the Heart of God, on Rogate Sunday.” Several similarities are notable to the hymn “Getreuer Heiland, hilf mir beten” by Schmolck’s younger acquaintance, Christoph Pfeiffer.

MY Abba-cry comes nigh Thy throne
O Father, through Thy Son alone,
Who in my mouth hath set the word
And my request to Thee referred.
In Jesus’ name my cry is cried
Until Thy heart is opened wide.

2 In Jesus’ name I take my place
My God! before Thy door of grace.
For Jesus so instructed me,
Who said, with twofold “Verily,”
If in this name I make my cry,
My pray’r shall then be heard on high.

3 In Jesus name my plea I bring,
Since I can name no greater thing,
Thy fond paternal heart to break
Than when my mouth that name doth speak.
He constantly recalls to Thee
Thy lovingkindness fatherly.

4 In Jesus’ name I carry on,
And this my watchword is alone,
So that, should grief my lips restrain,
This name before Thee doth remain
And show that heart’s distress can prove
A mighty pray’r, Thy heart to move.

5 In Jesus’ name I all include
Which shall for me be blest and good.
For in this word I pow’r perceive
To which both soul and body cleave.
When armed with this I seek Thy face,
I find abundant grace for grace.

6 In Jesus’ name I soar above
To heaven, to Thy heart of love;
It gives me wings that I may fly
And pierce the clouds to realms on high,
And as I speak, it brings my plea
And sets it in Thy memory.

7 In Jesus’ name I call to mind
The sonship once to me consigned:
The Father Thou, the child am I,
And Thou wilt never lose my sigh.
When groans Thy Spirit in my breast,
Then mercy Thou rememberest.

8 In Jesus’ name I hold to Thee
Thy Son’s dread wounds and death for me;
His blood than Abel’s better cries,
’Tis oil to make life’s flame arise.
Yea, if Thou shouldest me ignore,
Then were He Jesus Christ no more.

9 In Jesus’ name I have e’en now
The foretaste of Thy fav’ring love.
Before I can or would implore
Thou hearest what I ask, and more,
Before I cry, O Lord, to Thee,
The ready answer comes to me.

10 In Jesus’ name I carry on
Until I a hearing may be won;
If Thou seem deaf, I still am bold,
As long as Jesus Word doth hold,
I know Thou wilt remain my Friend,
And, seeming deaf, my pray’r attend.

11 In Jesus’ name I hereby close
My sigh, and there let it repose.
My pray’r a sure Amen shall be;
This word shall never lie to me,
But perfect light of joy in heav’n,
Since Jesus’ name doth say Amen.

GERMAN
Mein Abba kömmt vor Deinen Thron
zu Dir, o Vater, durch den Sohn,
der mir das Wort in Mund gelegt,
und mein Gebete für Dich trägt,
ich ruf in Jesu Namen an,
bis mir Dein Herz wird aufgethan.

2 In Jesus Namen steh ich hier,
mein Gott! für Deiner Gnaden-thür.
So hat mich jesus unterricht't,
der zweimal wahrlich! wahrlich! spricht:
Wenn ich in diesem Namen schrei,
daß mein Gebet erhöret sei.

3 In Jesus Namen heb' ich an,
weil ich nichts größ'res nenne kann,
das Dir das Vater-Herze bricht,
als wenn mein Mund den Namen spricht.
Denn der erinnert Dich all'zeit,

des Sohnes Tod und wunden für;
Sein Blut schreit mehr als Abels Blut,
und das ist Oel in meiner gluth.
Ja gäbest Du mir kein Gehör,
so wär Er auch nicht Jesus mehr.

9 In Jesus Namen trag ich schon
den Vorschmack Deiner Gunst davon.
Eh' ich noch beten will und kann,
so hörst Du schon meine Schreien an;
eh' ich noch rufe, Herr! zu Dir,
so kuommt die Antwort schon zu mir.

10 In Jesus Namen halt ich an,
bis ich Erhörung finden kann.
Verstelle Dich nur, wie Du willt,
so lange Jesus Wort was gilt,
so lange bleibst Du auch mein Freund,
obgleich Dein Ohr verschlossen scheint.

11 In Jesus Namen schließ ich drauf
den angefang'nen Seufzer-lauf.
Meine Bitten wird ein Amen sein,
und ein vollkommner Freudenschein.
Denn dieses Wort betrügt mich nicht,
weil Jesus Namen Amen spricht.

Kommt lasset uns in Jesu Namen

Here is my translation of the Prayer hymn, “Kommt lasset uns in Jesu Namen” (P. Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #64 for Rogate Sunday (Gospel: John 16:23–30) with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” In The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.), the English adaptation appears in 7 stanzas of Long Meter, beginning “Great Comforts Does the Saviour Give,” which I include below.

IN Jesus’ name and faith unshaken
Come let us to the Father pray,
His oath is never lightly taken,
His Word abides unchanged for aye;
To us His Spirit He will send,
Who shows what way doth heav’nward tend.

2 Our heart no lasting joy obtaineth
Till we ourselves in Jesus find—
True comfort out of reach remaineth,
To truth we all are deaf and blind
We neither see nor know aright
Except the Spirit give us light.

3 When God the heart doth kindle brightly
By His dear Word and Spirit pure,
The Savior is proclaimèd rightly,
Who is the Way and Truth most sure.
Then to men’s hearts is rendered clear
What Jesus tells His foll’wers here.

4 The Father loves us as He liveth,
His Son our Mediator is;
To us all things He freely giveth
Which serve for our eternal bliss;
This is for us the greatest grace,
That Christ the Son redeemed our race.

5 If we have loved the Son sincerely
And in His precious Word believed,
The Father too doth love us dearly
And in His grace we are received
This love and grace shall ours remain,
Till we behold Him there in heav’n.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
Great comforts does the Savior give,
To those who in His Word believe;
He says the Father will indeed,
Grant to His saints all they do need.

2 He bids us ask by faithful pray’r,
And solemnly He doth declare:
What e’er you ask in My blest name,
Ye shall be sure to have the same!

3 God’s Word and promise never fail,
All faithful pray’rs—they must prevail;
God’s promises are not in vain,
What e’er we need, we shall obtain.

4 God ever bows His gracious ear,
The pray’rs of faithful souls to hear;
Their times of troubles will be past
And all their wants relieved at last.

5 When the disciples were distressed;
With many doubts and fears oppressed—
The Savior bid [bade] them bear and wait,
And patiently endure their fate.

6 To their great comforts they should find,
That God was gracious, good and kind;
And they should find He was their Friend,
Who made them happy in the end.

7 We join to pray in Jesus’ name,
For God will be to us the same,
Such as He was in former days,
Which we shall witness to His praise.

GERMAN
Kommt lasset uns in Jesu Namen,
im Glauben zu dem Vater flehn
sein Wort bleibt ewig ja und Amen,
was er verheißt, das muß geschehn;
er will uns schenken seinen Geist,
der uns den Weg zum Himmel weist.

2 Es wird uns keine Freud vollkommen,
bis wir nun recht in Christo sind,
der wahre Trost bleibt uns genommen,
wir sind zur Wahrheit taub und blind;
wir sehen und erkennens nicht,
wo uns nicht schein des Geistes Licht.

3 Wann Gott das Herze selbst anzündet,
mit seinem Wort, mit seinem Geist,
so wird der Heiland recht verkündet,
der selber Weg und Wahrheit heißt;
dann wird dem Herzen klar gemacht,
was Jesus seinen Jüngern sagt.

4 Der Vater ists, der uns selbst liebet,
dieweil der Sohn der Mittler ist,
auch uns deshalben alles giebet,
was uns auch dient zu jeder Frist.
Das ist für uns die größte Gnad,
daß uns der Sohn erlöset hat.

5 Wann wir den Sohn nur herzlich lieben
und glauben seinem theuren Wort,
so wird uns auch der Vater geben,
daß wir auch werden immerfort
in seiner Gnad und Liebe stehn,
bis wir ihn dort im Himmel sehn.

Aufer a nobis

Here is my suggested translation and adaptation of the Latin litany hymn, “Aufer a nobis,” which is found in ELGB #280, where the note is included: “It should be sung often at Matins and Vespers, in Rogation Week, and in time of need, and also on Sundays after the Epistle in place of the Sequence.” This hymn, originally an antiphon in the ancient church, is found in several slightly different versions. The present form found in the Buffalo Synod hymnal does not reflect the Trinitarian formula seen, e.g., in Cantica Sacra (Magdeburg, 1613), but has a stanza to the Triune God generally, the Father, and the Son, peculiarly with Alleluias instead of repeated refrains of “Have mercy,” etc., as seen for Advent I in Keuchenthal, 1f. This form rather comes from the Pomeranian Church Order (1569ff.) and originates thus as a separate Evangelical emendation of the Catholic form as seen later in Alte Catholische Geistliche Kirchengesäng, printed for the Bishop of Trier (Cölln: Quentel, 1615), replacing the Catholic phrase “Sancta Maria ora pro nobis” with “per Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum.” A similar form was referenced in various Lutheran church orders of the 17th c.

TAKE away from us, O Lord,
all our iniquities,
that with clean hearts and minds we may worthily enter
into Thy Holy of Holies.
Alleluia.

2 Give ear, give ear, O Lord,
To our prayers through Jesus Christ,
our Lord.
Alleluia.

3 Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy on Thy people,
Whom Thou hast redeemed, O Christ, with Thy blood,
And be not angry with us forever!
Alleluia.

LATIN

Aufer a nobis, Domine,
cunctas iniquitates nostras,
ut possimus puris mentibus introire,
ad Sancta Sanctorum.
Allelujah.

2 Exaudi, exaudi, Domine,
preces nostras per Jesum Christum,
Dominum nostrum.
Allelujah.

3 Miserere, miserere, miserer populi tui,
quem redemisti Christe, sanguine tuo,
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.

Here is my supplemental translation of the Passion & Prayer hymn, “Du gehest in den Garten beten” (Johann Mentzer, 1734), which takes Jesus’ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane as a lesson for Christian prayer generally (the “art of prayer”), which, it may be argued, is not the primary lesson to be drawn from this event. In any case, the application makes it more suitable for Rogation Week than Holy Week. Perhaps because of its substantial (mostly stylistic) revision beginning “Du gehst zum (or in) Garten um zu beten,” it is sometimes wrongly ascribed that Benjamin Schmolck, while the Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch itself ascribes it to Johann Conrad Klemm, 1763, long after its first appearance. The revisions increased gradually from 1740 through the 19th c., so I provide only the latest and most extreme variants in the square brackets. The translation of revised stanzas 1–5, 7, and 12 by Jeremiah Eames Rankin appears in his German-English Lyrics: Sacred and Secular (1898). I provide the missing stanzas as well as an alternate for stanza 9 marked “9v.”

In the Ev. Liederschatz, a footnote clarifies the end of stanza 12 evangelically: “That is, by my prayer I obtain the grace by which I am able to enter heaven.”

The appointed melody in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch is “Wer weiß, wie nahe mir mein Ende,” thought elsewhere it is “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

TO pray Thou goest to the Garden,
Take me, my Jesus, with Thee there.
Wilt Thou the rude intrusion pardon!
I’d learn from Thee the art of pray’r.
On Thee, dear Master, fixed my eye,
Would learn how pray’r mounts to the sky.

2 Sore troubled, Lord, I see Thou’rt going,
And sorrowful, e’en unto death!
This to my thoughtful heart is showing
That mortal pray’r is burdened breath.
A broken and a contrite heart
Is the beginning of the art.

3 From Thy disciples, Lord, receding,
Thou’rt seeking deeper solitude;
A like seclusion I am needing,
Where time and sense cannot intrude.
Draw me from all the world aside,
To Thee in solitude allied.

4 On the cold earth, Lord, Thou art kneeling,
And fallen prostrate on Thy face!
O heart, be humbled, not unfeeling,
I’m dust and ashes, void of grace.
I’ll cast me down in nothingness,
Like thee, in anguish and distress.

5 Thou prayest to Thy Father holy,
’Tis Abba, Father! like a child.
He stoops to listen to the lowly;
And I with sin am all defiled.
In the dear name I sinful sigh,
And Abba, Abba, Father! cry.

6 Filled with all trust and love, Thou pryest
Deep in the heart, so quickly stirred,
Of God the Father, as Thou criest
“My—My—My Abba!” heavenward.
So I of faith and love have need,
Or else my prayer is dead indeed.

7 Thy grief Thou lay’st with piteous feeling
Before the chast’ning Father’s face;
With what great force Thou knock’st, appealing
For rescue at the door of grace!
I too lament what torments me
And all my wants I seek from Thee.

8 O patient Lamb! why Thy delaying,
And thrice repeating Thy request?
This, then, is in the art of praying,
This kind Thy Father loves the best.
Who prays well once, prays o’er and o’er,
And, first refused, but asks the more.

9 And what is this I hear Thee crying,
as though, at length, the prize were won?
Thy wish to His thus crucifying,
“Not My will, Father, Thine be done!”
So should I hush my heart and still,
And wait in pray’r the Father’s will.

[9v Thy will unto the will submitteth
Of God the Father most belov’d;
Such full submission me befitteth,
Would I see God to answ’ring moved;
Therefore I pray resignedly:
“Whate’er God wills, so let it be!]

10 Though Thy disciples all forget Thee,
Thou them rememb’rest faithfully;
And, when all torments then beset Thee,
Provid’st for their security:
So my pray’r vainly is pursued
If it seek not the neighbor’s good.

11 Thou winnest by Thy faithful sighing
Strength, comfort, vict’ry, glory, life:
Thou thought’st of me, thereby supplying
This grace beyond the hour of strife:
That I such blessings too may reap
When I Thine art of pray’r shall keep.

12 My Jesus, help me to pray ever,
As Thy example teaches me:
Then I’ll shrink from the Father never,
But boldly ask, and answered be:
On faithful pray’r to heav’n I’ll fly,
And thank Thee evermore on high.

GERMAN

[O treuer…]
Laß mich an deine Seite treten,
ich weiche von dir keinen Schritt:
ich will an dir, meinm Lehrer, sehn, [Und sehen will ich andachtsvoll]

und fliehen was mein Herz zerstreut. [Was im Gebet mein Herz zerstreut.]

und im Gebete dreimal an! [Hältst in der Bitte . . .]
[stets also . . .]

Drum bet ich in Gelassenheit:
Was mein Gott will, gescheh allzeit.

mein Beten bleibet ohne Frucht, [Mein . . .]

dergleichen Segen erndten soll. [Der gleiche Segen, Herr, wie dir.]

12 Mein Jesu! hilf mir stets so beten, [Drum hilf mir, Jesu, so zu b.]
wie dein Exempel mich es lehrt: [. . . mich dein heilig Vorbild l.]

O Herre Gud, miskunde dig

Here is my translation of “O Herre Gud, miskunde dig” (attr. Hans Tavsen, 1528), from Nutzhorn (vol. 1, p. 100). Essentially an interpolation of the Our Father, it formed the hymn for evening prayer in Jutland during the early stages of the Danish Reformation. Its title in Chr. It was sung to “Deus misereatur nostri,” i.e., the tune for Luther’s paraphrase of Psalm 67, “Es wollt uns Gott genädig sein” [“May God Bestow on Us His Grace”].

O LORD, have mercy on us all,
See us on earth below Thee!
We are Thy children poor and small,
And as Our Father know Thee.
In heaven high Thou seated art,
And we mid mortal dangers
On earth implore Thee from our heart,
Send us not hence as strangers,
Nor in Thy wrath forsake us!

2. O Father, let Thy kingdom grow,
And thwart the devil’s pleasure,
Defend us from the harmful foe;
Grant grace in fullest measure,
That we as children Thee obey,
To Thy good reign be given.
Thy will be done on earth alway,
As it is done in heaven,
In all good things instruct us.

3. Give us this day our daily bread:
Thy Word and grace so holy;
To endless life let us be fed,
And saved from Satan’s fury.
Purge graciously from us the leav’n
Of Pharasaic teaching
And in its place let us be giv’n
Clear wine of Christ’s own preaching:
Right faith and faultless doctrine.

4. Forgive us, Father, and be kind:
In our trespasses spare us,
Nor let us desp’rate be to find,
So many sins ensnare us.
Support us bravely in the strife
To overcome the devil
And cruèl foes who seek our life.
Deliver us from evil!
Dear Father, hear us. Amen.

5. To give Thee glory, praise and laud
In every age forever
Shall be our will, O Father, God,
O Christ the Son, our Savior,
O Holy Ghost, our Comforter,
Adored in equal measure
In every land, by rich and poor,
Who find in Thee their pleasure.
Eternal life now grant them!
