Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied / Ihr Heilgen

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied / Ihr Heilgen sollt in ehren” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm CXLIX, Cantate Domino, with title “An exhortation to thanksgiving for the great grace of God.” The extended title should be noted so as to distinguish it from at least two other paraphrases beginning similarly. The Mixolydian melody by Waldis supports the meter 87.87.44.77.

UNTO the Lord a new song sing,
Ye saints, due praises give Him!
Be glad, O Isr’el, in your King,
With all delight receive Him.
Your progeny / with joy shall be
In Christ the Lord imbuèd,
Their conscience be renewèd

2 His name be praised in manner best;
Hearts, play with gladness glowing!
For He hath grace to all expressed,
To many mercy showing.
They please Him most, / His chosen host,
He helps the poor and lowly,
He makes the high and holy.

3 Let all the saints now joyful be
His goodness praising ever
Within the Christian church, where He
Reveals such grace and favor,
And mouths speak free / His high decree,
That they shall have salvation
From sin, death, and damnation!

4 Let them the sword which God doth hone
Wield without reservation,
To pierce soul, spirit, marrow, bone,
And cleave throughout creation,
To execute / His lawful suit
Among the unbelieving,
With Law the heart aggrieving

5 Let all the righteousness of men
Be by the Law defeated,
The Gospel’s comfort come again,
With cheer the sinner greeted,
That none be lost / nor vainly boast
And build his crumbling tower
On wisdom, works, and power.

6 And let the Lord alone be just,
He hath this writing given:
That all the sin of mankind must
By grace from them be driven.
So doth God save; / this honor have
His saints by His good favor
And praise the Lord forever!

Die heilige Gemeine

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Die heilige Gemeine” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm CXLIX, Cantate Domino canticum novum (II), with title “Weapons of spiritual warfare . . . Alleluia” and melody assignment “Ich dank dir, lieber Herre.”

THE holy congregation
With joyful mind and heart
New songs of adoration
Doth to the Lord impart.
Let Isr’el thanks be voicing
That God made him His own,
And Zion be rejoicing
In this her King alone!

2 Let them in dances springing
Praise to God’s name propound,
And with the sweetest ringing
Both harp and timbrel sound.
The Lord great pleasure taketh
In His beloved flock,
The meek He ne’er forsaketh,
But is their saving Rock.

3 The saints with jubilation
Our Maker glorify,
His praise to every nation
Declare with hearty joy,
Desiring every hour
To sing with all their soul,
With heart and mind and power
His glories to extol.

4 Within their hand, well wielded,
The Word’s a two-edged sword,
Great things thereby are builded,
That vengeance from the Lord
Upon the heathen falling
May bring them to comply,
To Him the many calling,
That they may never die.

5 They through God’s Word proclaimèd
Bind kings in iron bands;
The noble men, ashamèd,
Surrender to their hands.
God doth bring restoration
By His dear Word of grace,
And on his congregation
Alone this honor place.

GERMAN
Die heilige Gemeine,
Mit fröhlichem Gemüth,
Singet von Hertzen reine
Dem Herrn ein neues Lied.
Gott hat Iſraels Samen
Zu ſeinem Volck gemacht,
Des Königs werther Name
Zion groß Freude bracht.

2  Sie ſollen an dem Reigen
Loben des HErren Nam,
Mit Paucken, Harffen, Geigen
Spielen lieblich zuſamn,
Der HErr hat Wolgefallen
An ſeiner lieben Gmein,
Wil den Elenden allen
Ihr Gott und Helffer ſein.

3  Die Heiligen mit Freuden
Preiſen GOtt unſern HErrn,
Sein Ehr für allen Leuten
Rühmen ſie hertzlich gern
Und wollen alle Stunden
In Gottes Dienſte ſtehn,
Mit Hertzen und mit Munde
Sein Lob und Ehr erhöhn.

4  Das Wort in ihren Henden
Iſt wie ein ſcharffes Schwerdt,
Groß Ding ſie dadurch enden,
Daß Rach geübet werd
Unter dem Volck der Heyden,
Die ſie zwingen darmit,
Bringen zu recht viel Leute,
Daß ſie verderben nit.

5  Durch Gottes Wort ſie nemen
Die König in die Band,
Die Edlen ſich nicht ſchemen,
Stelln ſich in ihre Hand,
Daß ihnen wiederfahre
Recht nach dem Wort der Gnad,
Allein der Heilgen Schare
Von Gott ſolch Ehre hat.

Singt dem Herrn ein neues Lied

Here is my translation of the praise and thanksgiving hymn, “Singt dem Herrn ein neues Lied” (Matthäus Apelles von Löwenstern, d. 1648), in GGELB #375 with assignment of proper melody. The hymn, which combines a paraphrase of Psalms 149 and 150, is absent from Fischer’s lexicon. It should be distinguished from other hymns of similar first lines, which are largely paraphrases of Psalm 98 or 149. It first appears in the Vollständige Kirchen- und Haus-Music (Breslau, 1644), and is here based on that text with the music from the later edition of 1720. Note the greater rhythmic expression in the original. The first stanza is famously set by Bach for chorale (BWV 411).

SING a new song to the Lord,
In the holy congregation!
For from heaven He hath poured
Peace and blessing on His nation.
Joy, O Jacob, in Thy Savior!
He who made thee hears thy cry,
And in need doth help supply;
Oh, forget His mercies never!

2 Zion, in thy God rejoice,—
Thou and every generation!
Praise His laws with gladsome voice,
Bless His name with jubilation!
Let the drums and strings be sounded,
Bring the harp before the throng,
For He wills by sweetest song
That His works should be propounded.

3 For the Lord delights in thee,
People of His own possession!
Clouds of grace He ceaselessly
Sends to wash away transgression,
Helps the poor in glorious fashion:
When they fall before His feet,
Trusting in their Lord, as meet,
He shows mercy and compassion.

4 So rejoice forevermore,
Cast away all care and grieving,
God’s great majesty adore,
For His goodness bring thanksgiving,
Let all, near and far, adore Him:
All that breathe, His glories prove,
All whose members stir and move,
Praise the Lord and bow before Him.

GERMAN
Singt dem HERRN ein neues Lied,
die Gemeine soll ihn loben,
weil er ihren Gränzen Fried
hat versprochen hoch von oben,
Israel sich freue dessen,
welcher ihn gemachet hat
und in Ängsten schaffet Rath,
seiner soll er nicht vergessen.

2 Zion, über deinen Gott
freue dich samt deinem Samen,
halt in Ehren sein Gebot,
lobe seinen werthen Namen:
Nimm die Pauken, nimm die Seiten,
such hervor das Harfenspiel,
weil ers selbst so haben will,
seine Wunder auszubreiten.

3 Denn der HERR hat Lust an dir,
als an seinem eignen Volke,
er läßt schweben für und für,
über dir die Gnadenwolke,
herrlich hilft er auch dem Armen;
wenn er ihm zu Fuße fällt,
sein Vertrauen auf ihn stellt,
will er seiner sich erbarmen.

4 Drum sei fröhlich allezeit,
aller Sorgen dich entschütte,
danke seiner Herrlichkeit,
preise seine große Güte,
lob ihn alles nah und ferren,
was nur Lebensathem trägt,
was nur seine Glieder regt,
lobet alle GOTT den HERREN.
