Gott Vater, Ursprung, Quell und Grund

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Gott Vater, Ursprung, Quell und Grund” (B. Ringwaldt, 1568), from the author’s Lieder, with title “A Prayer to the Three Persons of the One Godhead.”

Mel.: Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.

O GOD the Father, Spring and Source
Of all the Godhead holy,
Transcending space and time and force,
Of Self subsisting solely,
By no man chosen, willed, devised,
Proceeding, born, nor realized,
But All to all things prior.

2 A Son Thou hast begotten e’er,
Beginning not nor ending,
A Person sep’rate, yet Thy peer,
With all Thy traits attending,
In every godly property—
Pow’r, glory,_and wisdom—one with Thee,
Whom heartily Thou lovest.

3 And from that Person and from Thee
Another yet proceedeth,
Like Him and Thee in majesty,
Who rule to neither cedeth,
Who is the Holy Spirit named,
And with You both alike acclaimed,
Nor can from You be severed.

4 We thank Thee, who hast in Thy Word
Revealed to us Thy nature,
And in Thy Son hast here conferred
Thy love to us, Thy creature,
Whereby, according to Thy will
He for our sins His blood must spill,
And in our flesh make payment.

5 To us poor men Thy Spirit give,
That by the Word with power
He may make faith within us live,
And wonders bring to flower,
That of this lofty fire of love,
Poured out in favor from above,
We may be made partakers.

6 Lord Jesus Christ, true Man and God,
The Image of the Father,
The Maker’s Heart, who bor’st the rod
Of suff’ring as our Brother,
To save us all: Thy grace bestow,
That we Thy saving work may know,
And not as sinners perish.

7 God, Holy Ghost, Thou Love sincere,
With Son and Father dwelling,
Give to us men a fervor here
For yonder throne excelling,
That we of earthly things may tire,
And set above our chief desire,
The things of heaven seeking.

8 O Self-Existence all-profound,
Three Persons, yet one Being!
The grace in Thee let now abound
Upon Thy Church, that fleeing
All erring reason, she may Thee
Adore as God in persons Three
And One in substance ever.

9 For as Thou hast Thy own self named,
Thou bid’st us honor show Thee;
They who believe this not are damned,
Because they do not know Thee.
The true God praised among His host
Is Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Nor is there any other.

Gott Vater, Ursprung, Quell und Grund,
der hohen Gottheit reine,
ohn gwisse Wohnung, Zeit und Stund,
von dir gar selbst alleine,
von niemands weder auserkorn,
erdacht, ausgangen, noch geborn,
sondern alles vor allem.

2 Und hast gezeuget einen Sohn
ohn Anfang und ohn Ende,
ein sondre doch dir gleich Person
im Wesen für sich stehnde,
die gar ist deiner Eigenschaft
an Weisheit, Ansehn, Ehr und Kraft,
und liebest sie von Herzen.

3 Von welcher, und von dir so wohl
ausgeht noch ein Persone,
dir und dem Sohn gleich ehrenvoll
in ungetheilter Krone,
wird Gott der heilig Geist genannt,
die von euch beiden im Verstand
nicht mag getrennet werden.

4 Wir danken dir, denn du so fein
dich hast im Wort erkläret,
und an uns in dem Sohne dein
dein höchste Lieb bewähret,
in dem, daß er nach deinem Rath
hat müssen unser Übelthat
in unsern Fleisch bezahlen.

5 Send deinen Geist uns armen zu,
daß er die hohe Sachen,
durchs Wort in unsern Herzen thu,
fest und gewiße machen,
auf daß wir solcher tiefen Brunst
an uns geübt aus lauter Gunst,
theilhaftig mögen werden.

6 Herr Jesu Christ, wahr Mensch und Gott,
des Vaters Bild und Herze,
der du für uns viel Hohn und Spott,
ja auch des Todes Schmerzen,
getragen hast, dein Gnad verleih,
daß solches nit vorloren sei,
an uns betrübten Sünder.

7 Gott heilger Geist, du innig Lieb,
im Vater und im Sohne,
ein Inbrunst auch uns Menschen gieb,
zum freudenreichen Throne,
daß wir vergessen dieser Erd,
und allermeist unser Gebärd
in Himmel naufen heben.

8 O Gott, du tief Selbständigkeit,
die du bist eins in Dreien,
thu doch der armen Christenheit,
die Gnad in dir verleihen,
daß sie dich stets mit allem Fleiß
in drei Personen Eher und Preis
als einen Gott im Wesen.

9 Denn wie du dich uns hast erklärt,
willt du auch sein genennet,
wer das nicht gläubt zum Teufel fährt,
dieweil er dich nicht kennet.
Der rechte Gott mit Namen heißt
Gott Vater, Sohn, heiliger Geist,
sonst wird gar keiner funden. Amen.
