Gott Vater, Sohn, Heiliger Geist (der du…)

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Gott Vater, Sohn, Heiliger Geist (der du…)” (N. Selnecker, 1587), from the author’s Christliche Psalmen, Lieder und Kirchengesenge, for Holy Trinity. It is to be distinguished from hymns beginning similarly by Mathesius, Freder, and von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Olearius includes it in his Singekunst  as no. 716 with the melody “Der du bist drei,” for which I give the simplified version rather than Babst’s adaptation of the Gregorian melody—this alongside the original melody by Selnecker, the beginning of which is noted in Zahn to agree with that of “Christe der du bist Tag und Licht.”

GOD, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Who unto us Thy nature show’st,
In substance One, in person Three:
Receive us graciously to Thee!

2 Thou, Father, hast Thy Son bestowed,
Who takes away the heavy load
Of all our sins, our Brother true,
Through Him Thou art our Father too.

3 O Son of God, and Mary’s Son,
From Thee are life and comfort drawn,
The Father’s Brightness, yea, His Heart,
Of body_and soul our Balm Thou art.

4 Thou, Holy Ghost, dear Paraclete,
Thy people here on earth dost meet,
Dost make our hearts Thy dwelling blest
And art of all the dearest Guest.

5 O faithful God, our faith sustain,
And let us in Thy Word remain,
And here and there adore, as due
The Trinity, our Refuge true.

nimm uns zu deinen Gnaden an.

2 Vater, dein Sohn gegeben hast,
der von uns wegnimmt alle Last:
Er unser Bruder worden ist,
durch ihn du unser Vater bist.

3 O Gottes Sohn, Marien Frucht,
bei dir man Trost und Leben sucht,
du bist des Vaters Glanz und Herz,
nimmst von uns Leibs- und Seelenschmerz.

4 Heiliger Geist, du Tröster werth,
läßt dich herunter auf die Erd,
in unser Herzen Wohnung hast,
und bist der alleredelst Gast.

5 Ach treuer Gott, erhalt uns recht
bei deinem Wort im Glauben schlecht,
daß wir dich ehren hier und dort,
Vater, Sohn, Geist, o treuer Hort.
