Wohl dem, der sich Tag und Nacht

 Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wohl dem, der sich Tag und Nacht” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for the feast of the Holy Trinity, with title “Of the Knowledge of the True God, John 3.”

Mel.: Gott der Vater, wohn uns bei.
 

BLEST is he who day and night
The Word of God doth ponder,
Seeking Christ to know aright,
Who leaveth none to wonder,
But instructs the heart and mind
Of God aright and plainly.
The heart doth search but vainly
When, turned from God, insanely
It would its own self unbind
And unto God be turning,
His nature be discerning,
And all His will be learning.
May Christ teach us this alway,
So sing we Alleluia!

2 To the Lord for wisdom went
The teacher Nicodemus,
Where he for the first was lent
A knowledge now most famous,
Of God’s will and nature good
As one eternal Father,
His only Son, our Brother,
The Spirit, with each other
Glorious; in whose name we should
Be born by God’s good favor,
That we might perish never,
But be heav’n’s heirs forever.
May God make this true alway,
So sing we Alleluia!

3 Thus alone do mortals come,
By water and the Spirit
Born anew, to Christendom,
In faith in Jesus’ merit,
Who from heaven came to us,
All sin upon Him taking,
Upon the cross hell slaking,
Death’s sting and terror breaking,
Satisfaction making thus,
That all in Him believing
Might suffer no bereaving,
But blest, escape all grieving,
And in heaven live for aye.
So sing we Alleluia!

Wohl dem, der sich Tag und Nacht
in Gottes Wort befleißet,
nach dem Herren Christo tracht,
der ihn nicht leer abweiset:
sondern in seim Unverstand
von Gott recht unterrichtet,
das Herz vergelbich tichtet,
sich mehr und mehr verstricket;
wenn es von Got abgewandt,
sich selbern will bekehren,
Gottes Wesen studieren,
und seinen Willn erlernen.
Christus lehrs uns, ders uns kann,
so singn wir Alleluja.

2 Zum Herrn in die Schule ging
Nicodemus, ein Meister,
und da allererst anfing,
daß er vorlangst soll wissen
von Gottes Wesen und Willn,
wie er ein Vater wäre,
und einen Sohn gebiere,
mit dem Geist gleicher Ehre,
durch welchen wir alle sölln
aufs neu geboren werden,
daß wir ja nicht verderben,
sondern den Himmel erben.
Das woll Gott so machen wahr,
so singn wir Alleluja.

3 Dies ist die einige Weis
in Gottes Reich zu kommen,
aus dem Wasser und dem Geist,
aufs neu werden geboren,
im Glauben an Gottes Sohn,
der hoch vom Himmel kommen,
all Sünd auf sich genommen,
am Kreuz den Tod verschlungen,
für uns all genug gethan,
daß all die an ihn gläuben,
nicht solln verloren bleiben,
sondern selig abscheiden,
und das ewig Leben han,
so singn wir Alleluja.
