Wie ist die Welt so feindschaftsvoll

Here is my translation of the brotherly love and forgiveness hymn, “Wie ist die Welt so feindschaftsvoll” (Laurentius Laurentii, d. 1730), in GGELB #407 with melody assignment “Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn,” first appearing in the author’s Evangelia Melodica (1700) as the second hymn for the Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

 

WHAT enmity the world doth fill!
It lives in vengeance, strife, ill-will,
No peace or pardon knowing;
To altars bold men make their course
In feigning faith without remorse,
As though God rev’rence showing.

2 But he that would his off’ring bring,
And thinks not of th’ offending thing
His brother hath against him,
He hath no part in Jesus’ death;
Detestable is all he hath—
What shall be recompensed him?

3 He that forgives his brother not,
Nor loves him without guile or spot,
The same can love God never.
Cain’s murd’rous race are all his kin,
He is a hopeless slave of sin,
Whom God from life shall sever.

4 O mortal, look within thy breast
And with the Word no longer jest
Which God Himself commanded;
Thy Jesus saith, They that forgive
Their neighbor not, but them aggrieve,
To Satan will be handed.

5 Lord Jesus Christ, my soul defend,
And keep me mindful till the end
Of what Thou biddest duly;
Let me not seven times forgive,
But without ceasing as I live,
And love my brother truly.

6 Ye sons of men, to this give heed,
For ’tis a matter great indeed:
The Christian him forgiveth
Who here hath done him injury;
Keep Jesus’ teaching faithfully.
Who does so, life receiveth.

Wie ist die Welt so feindschaftsvoll,
und lebt in Rachgier, Streit und Groll,
und will sich nicht versühnen;
man kommt zum Altar sonder Scheu,
in Heuchelglauben sonder Reu,
und meint doch Gott zu dienen.

2 Allein, wer opfert sein Geschenk,
und wird nicht vorher eingedenk,
daß er was widrigs habe
an seinem Bruder, hat kein Theil
an Jesu Tod, und ist ein Greul,
mit seiner Opfergabe.

3 Wer seinem Bruder nicht vergiebt,
und ihn von reinem Herzen liebt,
der kann Gott nimmer lieben;
er ist aus Caïns Mordgeschlecht
und ein verdammter Sündenknecht,
dran Gott wird Rache üben.

4 O Mensch, geh einmal in dein Herz,
und treibe ferner keinen Scherz,
mit Gottes Wort im Leben;
dein Jesus spricht, wer nicht vergibt,
dem Nächsten, sondern Feindschaft übt,
wird Satan übergeben.

5 Bewahre mich, Herr Jesu Christ,
daß meine Seele nicht vergißt,
was du mir vorgeschrieben.
Laß mich vergeben siebenmal
und mehr als doppelt an der Zahl,
und meinen Bruder lieben.

6 Ihr Menschenkinder, folget nach,
denn diß ist eine groß Sach:
Ihr müßet dem vergeben,
der euch allhier beleidigt hat;
drum folgt gehorsam Jesu Rath.
Wer das thut, der wird leben.
