Kommt, ihr Kinder dieser Erden

Here is my translation of the children’s hymn, “Kommt, ihr Kinder dieser Erden” (Christian Schumann, d. 1744), in GGELB #364 with melody assignment “Alles ist an Gottes Segen,” and insertion of spurious stanza (7), included below as *; first appearing in the author’s Der Katchismus in Liedern (1728) for the Table of Duties “The duties of children toward parents. Sirach 3.” I use an early text from 1740 and note variants in square brackets below, as well as the extra stanza, probably inserted by the hymnal committee, since no other instance seems to exist. The intent is to include the scriptural origin of the command and blessing and perhaps lend some firmer footing to this hymn, which tends toward Rationalism (hence the several amendments of nebulous “heaven” to “God” or “Jesus”).

 

COME, ye children under heaven!
Would ye happiness be given,
Come and hearken! Be not coy!
Words of wisdom I will sing you
Which for all your days will bring you
Life and blessing, peace and joy.

2 To your parents be obedient,
Serve and be to them expedient,
Love and honor to them give.
This will make your days grow longer,
And prosperity the stronger,
As on earth your life ye live.

3 Jacob take for your example,—
Joseph, Samuel—see how ample
To their parents was their love!
Lo, these men of faith unfeignèd
Fortune, health, and honor gainèd,
Giv’n alone from God above.

4 Joseph to a throne was lifted;
Jacob, with two armies gifted;
Samuel high in honor stands.
So must all men be confessing:
Faithful children find a blessing
At their gracious Father’s hands.

5 Over all, be most delighted
By the words of Jesus cited,
Who obeyed in piety:
Wisdom, stature, grace, and favor
Followed in His pathway ever;
God was with Him constantly.

6 Parent’s blessing houses buildeth,
Palm fronds to the children yieldeth, [Vict’ry…]
Maketh great the small and slight. [Makes their name with honor bright.]
Yea, it soothes the ill that stingeth,
Children ever upward bringeth, [And the children never bringeth,]
E’en to honor’s temple height. [To the gallows’ grisly height.]

* Of His Ten Commandments holy,
God was pleased that He should solely
One with this dear promise give,
Which He added to none other:
Who doth honor father, mother,
Long and well on earth shall live.

7 But the wicked generation
Stain their parents’ reputation
And the curse and ban receive;
Evil fortune and disaster
Chase their footsteps ever faster,
Fearful thoughts their soul aggrieve.

8 Eli’s wayward sons were duly
Slain for wickedness unruly,
Esau lost the blessing dear,
Ham the curse alone inherits,
Absalom a hanging merits
For his vengeance all severe. [By a judgment all severe.]

9 Eyes that once their parents mockèd
By the ravens will be pluckèd
In the valley where they lie;
Hearts all faithfulness forgetting
Shall young eagles soon be eating
As their meat with gleeful cry. *Prov. 30:17.

10 But the pious children’s blessing
Has a worth beyond all guessing,
Heaven’s love on them is poured. [And God’s favor on them poured.]
If long life be here not given,
Yet it will be there in heaven, [Jesus grant it us in heaven.]
Where the Lord is their reward. [Who shall be our great reward!]

Kommt, ihr Kinder dieser Erden,
wollt ihr einst beglücket werden,
ey! so kommt, und hört mir zu:
Ich will euch von Weisheit sagen,
die euch bringt bei euren Tagen
Leben, Segen, Glück und Ruh.

2 Folgt den Eltern, dienet ihnen,
ehret sie mit That und Mienen, [Ehrt sie mit Wort, That…]
schätzt sie aller Liebe werth:
Das wird euch das Leben bringen,
alles wird euch wohl gelingen,
wie es euer Herz begehrt.

3 Nehmt zum Muster eurer Seelen
Joseph, Jakob, Samuelen,
die die Eltern hoch geliebt:
Seht, wie diesen werthen Frommen
alles Glück und Heil gekommen,
das allein der Himmel giebt. […der Herr nur giebt.]

4 Joseph kam zum Stuhl der Ehren,
Jakob ward zu zweien Heeren,
Samuel bleibt auserwählt:
Also muß den frommen Kindern
nichts an ihrem Segen hindern,
denn ihr Wohl bleibt ungezählt.

5 Und am meisten unter allen
soll euch Christi Rath gefallen,
der fromm und gehorsam war: [der den Eltern unterthan;]
Alter, Weisheit, Huld und Gnade
folgten seinem frommen Pfade,
Gott war mit ihm immerdar. [wuchs und zunahm, wohl daran!]

6 Elternsegen bauet Häuser,
bringt den Kindern Palmenreiser,
machet groß, was schlecht und klein: [daß man ihrer Ehr gedenkt.]
Elternsegen dämpft das Wehe,
führt die Kinder hin zur Höhe, [daß es Kindern nie geschehe]
und zum Ehrentempel ein. [daß man sie an Galgen hängt.]

* Hat es doch Gott wohlgefallen,
unter den Geboten allen
eines dazu auszusehn
dem er die Verheißung giebet:
Wer die Eltern ehrt und liebet,
dem soll es hie wohlergen.

7 Also geht es nicht den Frechen,
die der Eltern Ehre schwächen,
solche trifft nur Fluch und Bann;
Unglück folget ihren Tritten,
und auf allen ihren Schritten
schreckt sie, was sie schrecken kann.

8 Eli böse Kinder finden,
Noth und Tod für ihre Sünden,
Esau kommt zum Segen nicht;
Cham muß nichts als Fluch ererben, [Ham…]
Absalom am Galgen sterben, [Absalon…]
den die Rache zugericht. [durch ein plötzliches Gericht.]

9 Augen, die der Eltern spotten,
pflegt der Rabe auszurotten
am Bach, wo ihr Körper liegt;
Herzen, die der Treu vergessen,
muß der junge Adler fressen,
der ihr Fleisch zum Raube kriegt.

10 Aber frommer Kinder Segen
ist mit Centnern nicht zu wägen,
ihnen bleibt der Himmel hold: […Höchste hold.]
Kommt hier nicht das lange Leben, [Kommt nicht hier ein…]
so wirds dort der Himmel geben, [Wolls uns dort aus Gnaden geben]
