Bin ich, Herr Jesu, der dich liebet

Here is my translation of the Passion hymn, “Bin ich, Herr Jesu, der dich liebet” (Johannes A. Grammlich. d. 1728), of which stanzas 1–2 and 6 are found in Lochner’s Passion-Buch, the 12th Devotion. It originates from the author’s devotional on the Passion, Viertzig Betrachtungen (1727), medit. 5, p. 69ff., on Jesus’ announcement of the traitor in the Apostles' midst, and their question in reply. The assigned melody is “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

 

LORD, am I he who loves Thee truly,
Who clings to Thee in times of woe?
Who is to Thee devoted wholly,
And in Thy ways alone doth go?
Am I the one? The truth display:
O Light of life, say yes or nay!

2 Am I the one who ’gainst Thee liveth,
Who coldly turns his back to Thee?
Am I the child that with Thee striveth,
That loves and hears Thine enemy?
Am I the one? The truth display:
O Light of life, say yes or nay!

3 Am I one who hath Thee forsaken,
And doth to idle things incline?
Who by the foe’s deceit is taken?
Have I aggrieved the Lamb divine?

4 Am I, O Christ, Thy true believer?
Have I a part yet in Thy grace,
Recorded in Thy blood forever
For my eternal blessedness?
Was I the faithful one alway?
O Light of life, say yes or nay!

5 O Jesus, have I duly chasèd
Thy footsteps through life’s journey here?
Have I Thy cross with joy embracèd?
Have I from worldlings gone apart?
And have I followed in Thy way?
O Light of life, that left Thy way?

6 Have I become a Judas-brother,
Who hath for money sold his Lord?
Is now the murd’rous foe my father,
Am I among the wicked horde?
Am I the one? The truth display:
O Light of life, say yes or nay!

7 I own my sins, O dearest Savior,
I show my debts, concealing none!
Oh, Father, grant me grace and favor,
Forgive what I have wrongly done;
Lo, I repent, and humbly pray,
Cast me not, Light of life, away!

8 With contrite tears I come before Thee
And seek Thy mercy and Thy grace;
In humble rev’rence I implore Thee,
Do Thou my every debt erase;
Denying not my sin, I pray,
O Light of life, and trust alway!
