Preise Gott, mein ganz Gemüthe

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Preise Gott, mein ganz Gemüthe” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for the feast of the Visitation. I post it today on the Octave of that feast.

Mel.: Herr, ich habe mißgehandelt.

PRAISE your God, my heart and spirit!

And recount His faithfulness,

Love, and mercy, which all merit

That we should Him ever bless.

Every day His truth He showeth,

Blessings all on us bestoweth.

2 Every sight the eye is given,

Everywhere the senses turn,

To the smallest detail even,

Must as bright reminders burn,

Singing of my God’s compassion,

Showing me my consolation.

3 Where is such a God abiding,

Heav’nly Father, like to Thee?

Who our thousand sins eliding,

Dost forgive us graciously?

Who from heart doth not aggrieve me,

But the strokes of love doth give me?

4 If the cross at times be biting,

Sweeter must Thy comfort be;

If the storm be sometimes smiting,

Filling us with agony,

Yet upon Thy people pining

Grace’s sun Thou sendest shining.

5 Should our hearts not then be rising

To our lips in flow’ring praise?

Far beyond our realizing

Are Thy mercies all our days,

That we cannot count the measure

Nor repay Thee for this treasure.

6 But since, Jesus’ blood possessing,
Mortal’s hearts can pleasing be,

Oh, then for Thy bounteous blessing

Take them as our gifts to Thee.

Yea, o’er all Thou hast or hearest,

Unto Thee such gifts are dearest!

7 Now, then, thanks and praise I give Thee,

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

In Thy blessing still receive me,

Grant me what shall aid me most.

Till in yonder life before Thee

I may evermore adore Thee.

GERMAN

Preise Gott, mein ganz Gemüthe,

und erzähle seine Treu.

Seine Liebe, seine Güte

macht sich alle Morgen neu;

und aus allen seinen Werken

läßt sich lauter Segen merken.

2 Was die Augen nur erblicken,

und wohin die Sinnen gehn,

muß auch in den kleinsten Stücken

ein vergnügend Denkmal stehn,

welches Gottes Güte preiset,

und sie mir zum Troste weiset.

3 Wo ist so ein Gott zu finden,

als wie du, mein Vater, bist,

der bei Mllionen Sünden

gnädig und barmherzig ist?

der von Herzen nicht beetrübet,

und mir Liebesschläge giebet?

4 Ist das Kreuz zu Zeiten bitter!

muß dein Trost viel süßer sein.

Schlägt manchmal ein Ungewitter

auch mit großem Schrecken ein;

ei! so läßest du den Deinen

doch die Gnadensonne scheinen.

5 Sollte denn von Herzensmuthe

unser Mund nicht übergehn?

ach! du thust uns mehr zu gute,

als wir bitten und verstehn,

daß wir alles weder nennen

noch genug verdanken können.

6 Wenn, jedoch von Christi wegen,

dir das Herz gefallen kann,

ach! so nimms für deinen Segen

als ein armes Opfer an.

Ja, du willt für allen Gaben

dies am allerliebsten haben.

7 Nun, dir sag ich Lob und Ehre,

Vater, Sohn und heilger Geist!

Segne ferner, und beschere,

was mir gut und selig heißt;

bis ich dir in jenem Leben

Ruhm und Preis kann ewig geben.

Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Trinity XXVII, a hymn on the end of the church year. The text may be inspired by the first line of the last stanza of Rinkart’s hymn.

Mel.: Nun danket alle Gott.

TO God be thanks and praise
Who hath so well supplied us
With blessings through the year,
Whose end doth now betide us!
He by His Holy Word
To heav’nly way hath showed,
And on both body and soul
Hath myriad goods bestowed.

2 To God be thanks and praise
Who hath so well supplied us
And shall this coming year
With blessings still provide us.
For never shall His grace
And faithful goodness fail;
Therefore with joyful hope
The coming year we hail.

3 To God be thanks and praise,
To God the heav’nly Father,
And to the Son, and Him
Co-glorious with each other:
On earth be chanted: “Lord,
Lord, Lord of Hosts,” always!
In heaven evermore
To God be thanks and praise!

GERMAN

Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott
für alle seinen Segen,
durch den wir abermal
ein Jahr zurücke legen.
Er hat uns durch sein Wort
den Himmels Weg gelehrt,
auch sonst für Seel und Leb
viel tausend Guts beschert.

2 Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott
für alle seinen Segen,
denn er auf künftig Jahr
wird wieder auf uns legen.
Denn seine Güte hört
ja nimmermehr nicht auf.
Ei nun, so hoffen wir
im Voraus freudig drauf.

3 Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott,
dem Vater und dem Sohne,
und dem, der Beider gleich
am Wesen und im Throne.
Hier zeitlich singt man dir,
Herr, Herr, Herr Zebaoth;
und dort auch ewiglich:
Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott.
