Here is my translation of the hymn “Nun wir sind auch diesmal satt” (E. Neumeister, 1702), appointed in the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl for Trinity VII. It is found in some hymnals as table hymn to be sung after eating.

Mel.: Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier. 

ONCE again we have been filled;
God hath fed us to our pleasure,
And with drink our heart hath thrilled;
Praise His goodness without measure,
Which, as long as life abideth,
Needful food and drink provideth!

2 If some sin and guilty stain
At our meal was perpetrated,
Oh, let us Thy grace obtain,
Mighty God, that, being sated,
We may never harm awaken
To our soul by food partaken.

3 Pour Thy faithfulness anew,
When day dawns and when ’tis ended,
On Thy saints and children true,
Who have all their cares commended.
To Thy hand, that strength bestoweth
And for works with blessing floweth.

4 Give to us a heart content,
That no wayward lust admitteth,
But by pray’r makes its ascent
To Thy feet, and humbly sitteth
In Thy lap with graces thronging,
There to still its every longing.

5 Father, open wide Thy hand,
Pity all the poor and lowly,
Now and ever where they stand
Vouchsafe in compassion holy
To bestow for their possessing
All things needful by Thy blessing.

6 Lastly, deign, O dearest Lord,
Always with true food to feed us
By Thy Holy Gospel Word,
Here to quicken, help, and speed us,

Here is my translation of the table hymn, “Danke dem Herren, o Seele, dem Ursprung der Güter” (Gerhard Tersteegen, d. 1769 [Ref.]), in NEGB #170 with melody assignment “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen Schöpfer der Erden” omitting stanzas 3–6; originally appearing in the author’s Geistliches Blumengärtlein (1729) with title “Hymn of thanks after meat.”

 

THANK, O my soul, the good Lord from whom all good descendeth,
Who doth our body enliven, the spirit who tendeth;
Give Him the praise,
Sing to the Fountain of grace,
Thank Him whose love never endeth.

2 All that our bodies may need Thou in mercy hast given;
Oh, may their powers to every good purpose be driven!
Be Thou alone,
Who soul and body dost own,
Praised by both here and in heaven!

Here is my translation of the table hymn, “O Vater, kindlich beten wir” (Anon. 18th c.), in NEGB #167 with title “Before eating” and melody assignment “Du unbegreiflich höchstes Gut” and omitting stanza 4. The German is already found in other American hymnals of the Pennsylvania ministerium as well as the Ausbund, and was (like other things in NEGB) included later in Ambrose Henkel’s book of children’s verses, Sammlung auserlesener Gebeter (1824). It is often assigned the melody “Erhalt uns Herr.”

 
 

O FATHER, childlike now we pray
To Thee for needful bread today;
Give to Thy children dear to Thee
And bless Thy gifts of charity.

2 Lord, spread Thy hand of bounty wide,
And for Thy creatures food provide,
O Maker and Sustainer great!

Here is my translation of the table (saying grace or returning thanks) hymn, “Danket dem Herren, denn Er ist sehr freundlich” (Johann Horn, d. ), in ELGB #368, first appearing in the Bohemian Brethren hymnal 1544 (Kirchengeseng) with title “Grace after meat” is a loose paraphrase of Psalm 136 designed for singing after a meal. It was notably included in the Babst Gsb 1545. Stanzas 7–8 are a later addition first appearing in the basel Gsb 1581. The original melody, a kind of normalized, rhythmic psalm tone of two half-verses of 11 syllables each, is given from the 1566 edition of Kirchengeseng. It is found earlier in the Tenor line of Senfl’s Vitam quae faciunt and Vivamus mea Lesba (1534) and used by Bach in BWV 286 (information from Bach Cantatas, which also features C. S. Terry’s translation).

Herr Gott Vater im Himmelreich

 Here is my translation of the Table hymn, “Herr Gott Vater im Himmelreich” (Caspar Huberinus, d. 1553), Ev.-luth. Gsb #594. Fischer notes the title under Huberinus in the author’s index, but has not entry for the hymn itself. I find it in Zacharias Praetorius’ Sylua pastorum I (Wittenberg, 1575), p. 78, with the title “Little Prayer,” formatted as prose without indication of tone, nor in strict meter. Earlier it is in Matouš Collinus’ German-Latin-Czech Libellus Elementarius (1569) with the title “Prayer before the Table from Psalm 144,” where it is preceded by the literal Psalm verse, the Kyrie in German, the traditional table prayer “Lord God, heavenly Father…” and then this hymn, or rather, rhymed prayer. The appointed melody is “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir.”

Here is my translation of the thanks and praise hymn “Lobet den Herrn und dankt ihm seiner Gaben” (B. Ringwaldt, 1586), which is found in the Wisconsin Synod hymnal as no. 13. It is properly a “Table Hymn” as noted from the first verse. The appointed melody there is “Herzliebster Jesu,” though a proper melody by J. Crüger from 1640 exists.

PRAISE ye the Lord, give thanks for what He’s given,
Which we have gotten by His grace from heaven;
Now at the table, yea, and in all places,
We see His graces!

2 He gave us life, and in our mother wrought us,
Into His kingdom by Baptism He brought us,
And by His Son, secured for us remission
Of all transgression.

3 He by His Spirit governs us and guides us,
With chast'ning, wisdom, and all needs provides us,
That in all woes our trust may never waver
From God our Savior.

4 He by His angels day and night doth watch us
Keeping us safe from harm, lest danger touch us,
