Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott (Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott)

Here is my (new) translation of the hymn “Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott” (M. Weiße, 1531), the slightly revised, more common form of Weiße’s Advent hymn, originally beginning “Lob sei dem allmächtigen Gott.” For the earlier translation supplement in Walther’s Hymnal, a few stanzas were inserted into Gambold’s translation. Olearius includes it among the hymns for Advent II, though it applies to Advent generally. Here I provide a new and entire translation. The proper melody is given below from a 17th c. edition with bass.

Mel.: Lob sei dem allerhöchsten Gott.

ALL praise to God the Highest be,
Who hath beheld us graciously,
And sent to us His dearest Son
Begotten in the highest throne.

2 That He our Savior might us win,
And free us from the weight of sin,
And by His grace and truth, as King
Would us to endless glory bring.

3 O mighty grace, O sweet command,
O love profound, O gen’rous hand!
God works a work that never can
Be praised enough by heav’n or man!

4 The Maker of all creatures takes
Our mortal nature, feels its aches,
Despising not a woman poor,
Who in her womb the God-Man bore.

5 The Father’s Word eternal deigns
To take our flesh yet free from stains,
The Alpha and Omega gives
Himself for man whom sin aggrieves.

6 But what is man, and all he’s done,
That God should give for Him His Son?
What need of us hath Good divine,
That He should thus for us repine?

7 O woe to them that Thee dispraise,
That will not share in all Thy grace,
Nor hear Thy Son and what He saith—
On them remains God’s wrath, and death.

8 Alas, O man, which nothing know’st,
And thusly thy own King oppos’st.
Who comes to thee in lowliness
And kindly would thy griefs redress!

9 Oh, welcome Him with joy today,
Make in thy heart for Him a way,
That He may enter heart and mind,
And thou in Him all goodness find!

10 Beneath His feet thy reason place
In this His coming full of grace,
Subjecting to His majesty
The work of justifying thee.

11 If this thou do, then He is thine,
Keeps thee from hell by grace divine;
If not, then watch, for certainly
He heaven’s doors will close to thee.

12 The first time He to earth came down
He came in meekness, not a crown;
The second time shall fright’ning be,
And strike the wicked painfully.

13 But those who in Christ Jesus stand
Shall go to joy at His rigiht hand,
The angel choirs will them befriend
Where them no evils more offend.

14 The Father in the highest throne
With Christ His dear and only Son,
And with the Holy Ghost equally
Be praised and blest eternally.

Was darf unser das höchste Gut,
daß es so unserthalben thut.

7 O weh dem Volk, das dich veracht,
der Gnad sich nicht theilhaftig macht,
nicht hören will des Sohnes Stimm,
dann auf ihm bleibet Gottes Grimm.

8 O Mensch, wie daß dus nicht verstehst,
und deim König entgegen gehst,
der dir so ganz demüthig kömmt,
und sich so treulich dein annimmt.

9 Ei nimm ihn heut mit Freuden an,
bereit ihm deines Herzensbahn,
auf daß er komm in dein Gemüth,
und du genießest seiner Güt.

10 Unterwirf ihm deine Vernunft,
in dieser gnadenreichn Zukunft,
untergib seiner Herrlichkeit,

Willkommen, auferstandner Held

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Easter-book is “Willkommen, auferstandner Held" (“A. B.,” ca. 1685). Lochner does not indicate an author or year. I find the text in a few hymnals from 1735, occasionally with initials “H. B.” Fischer gives no further identification than this, noting the first appearance in Auserlesenes Gsb (Altona, 1731). But I find it earlier in Praxis Pietatis Melica 1693 the Lüneburg Gsb 1686, 1694, all with the initials “A. B.” and melody “Lob sei dem allmächtigen [Gott].” It also appears early on in Riga hymnals.

Mel.: Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir

BE welcome, risen Champion, Thou,
Lord Jesus, who hast conquered now
The power of death by death endured,
And grace of God to us restored.

2 Be welcome, Hope of souls for bliss,
The pleasing spoil Thy portion is,
Enroll me, dearly bought by Thee,
Beneath Thy flag of victory.

3 Thou art the Most High’s very Son,
Our Savior and our Mercy-throne.
Who comes to Thee with grace in mind
Thy resurrection’s fruit shall find.

4 Lord Jesus, let Thy vict’ry-joy
Grant life in all that may annoy;
Grant that I may with Thee arise
From sin and lusts of flesh and eyes.

5 And ready me, when comes my day,
My head in gentle sleep to lay,
And by Thy rising, me to save,
Let me with joy depart the grave.

6 But till Thou bid me take my rest,
Bind me to Thee, as will be best,
And me, Thy due possession claim,
Unto the glory of Thy name.

Willkommen, auferstandner Held,
Herr Jesu, der du hast gefällt,
durch deinen Tod des Todes Macht,
und Gottes Gnade wiederbracht.

2 Willkommen, siegend Seelenheil,
mit der verlangten Beute Theil:
Schreib unter deiner Siegesfahn
mich deinen theur erloßten an.

3 Du bist des Allerhöchsten Sohn,
der Sünder Heil und Gnadenthron,
wer zu dir kommt und Gnade sucht,
erhält dein Auferstehungsfrucht.

4 Herr Jesu, deine Siegesfreud
erquicke mich in allem Leid.
Gib, daß ich jetzt aufsteh mit dir
von Sünd und böser Lustbegier.

5 Mach mich auch, wenn kömmt meine Zeit,
zum süßen Einschlaf wohl bereit,
und durch dein heilsam Auferstehn
laß mich froh aus dem Grabe gehn.

6 So lang du aber mich hier läßt,
verbinde dir aufs allerbest
mich, dein ersiegtes Eigenthum
zu deines großen Namens Ruhm.
