Am Sabbath kam Christus zu Gast

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Am Sabbath kam Christus zu Gast” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XVII, with title: “Of the Pharisee’s crafty banquet.”

Mel.: Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot.

AS Guest one Sabbath came the Lord,
To dine with one who Him abhorred—

This Pharisee and fellows feigned

That they would each be His friend.

Kyrieleis!

2 And yet in heart they Him despised,

No healthy food begrudged the Christ;

If pow’r were granted to their wish,

They would have made death His dish.

Kyrieleis!

3 Had they their way, He would have died

When He the merest morsel tried,

Grown pale and cold, and stirred no more,

As doth befit sinners sore.

Kyrieleis!

4 Although a chief of Pharisees

Bade Jesus with the rest of these,

’Twas all a ploy, that He might be

Beheld with hostility.

Kyrieleis!

5 Oh, what a dev’lish host is here,

Who will not with a heart sincere

Revere the Christ, the heav’nly Guest,

But murder plot in his breast!

Kyrieleis!

6 Such men may be discovered still:

Some, if they might their pastor kill

By pretense and as though a friend,

Would give a feast to that end.

Kyrieleis!

7 No guile did ever Christ deceive,

Who doth His servants counsel give

With false friends’ bread and wine to stay,

As is the most fitting way.

Kyrieleis!

8 He proved it with the Pharisee,

And also lends a hand, that He

The hypocrite may put to shame,

And in his house spoils his game.

Kyrieleis!

9  By upright words and actions too,

As God Himself doth speak and do,

Let every host note carefully,

And to this Guest gracious be.

Kyrieleis!

GERMAN

Am Sabbath kam Christus zu Gast

zum Pharisäer der ihn haßt,

mit seiner Sekten Tischgeselln,

zum Schein sich als Freunde stelln.

Kyrieleis!

2 Und sind ihm doch im Herzen feind,

gesunde Speis ihm keiner günt.

wenn Wünschen hätte was vermocht,

der Tod wär ihm da gekocht.

Kyrieleis!

3 Den hätt er müssen schlingen bald

am ersten Bissen werden kalt,

und nimmer regen Hand noch Fuß

erstickt, als ein Sünder groß.

Kyrieleis!

4 Denn ob ihn wohl ein Obrister

gebeten hat mit andern mehr,

so wars doch nur dahin gespielt,

daß man auf ihn feindlich hielt.

Kyrieleis!

5 Ei welch ein teufelischer Wirth

ist das, der nicht von Herzen ehrt

Christum, den himmelischen Gast,

sondern nach siem Leben tast!

Kyrieleis!

6 Man findt dergleichen noch itzund,

wenn mancher seinen Pfarrer konnt

im Schein der Freundschaft bringen um,

ein groß Panket hielt er drum.

Kyrieleis!

7 Christum kein List betrogen hat,

er gibt noch seinen Dienern Rath,

bei falscher Freunde Brot und Wein

zu bleiben, wie man soll sein.

Kyrieleis!

8 Er hats in Pharisäers Haus

beweist, er hilft noch immer aus,

daß man den Heuchler schamroth mach,

wohl unter seim eigen Dach.

Kyrieleis!

9 Mit Worten und Exempeln gut,

wie sie Gott selbern redt und thut,

ein jeder Wirth es merken sollt,

und solchem Gast werden hold.

Kyrieleis!
