Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, / daß du auferstanden bist

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, / daß du auferstanden bist” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, second series, for Easter Monday, a parody of Luther’s hymn retaining the first line of each stanza. For my translation I have used Russell’s translation, being perhaps the most faithful in the Public Domain and requiring the least alteration.

O JESUS Christ, all praise to Thee,

Who art risen gloriously,

And hast by virtue of Thy death

Brought us true life by grace through faith.

2 Th’ eternal Father’s only Child

Makes us children reconciled,

Gives glorious garments for our dress,

Salvation, life, and righteousness.

Alleluia!

3 He whom the world cannot enclose

In the tomb did dead repose;

Yet by His pow’r He rose again,

Slew death Himself and now doth reign.

Alleluia!

4 Th’ eternal Light before us goes,

The brightness of His life now glows;

He in the Gospel gives us light, 

And makes our souls with gladness bright.

5 The Father’s Son, by nature God,

Slain for us on Calv’ry’s rod,

Now lives, yea, lives for me and thee,

That we may live eternally.

Alleluia!

6 In poorest guise to earth He came,

That His heart, warm with love’s flame

Might kiss us, and His merit prove

A treasure of all grace and love.

Alleluia!

7 For us this wondrous work He wrought,

Joy in dying thus He taught,

For this our body shall arise

From out the tomb to heaven’s prize.

Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ,

daß du auferstanden bist,

und hast durch deines Tode Kraft

das rechte Leben uns geschafft.

2 Des ewgen Vaters einig Kind

durch den wir auch Kinder sind,

schenkt uns ein herrlich Feierkleid

des Heils und der Gerechtigkeit.

3 Den aller Weltkreis nie beschloß,

lag tot in des Grabes Schoß;

doch stund er auf aus eigner Macht

und hat den Tod selbst umgebracht.

Halleluja!

4 Das ewige Licht geht da herein.

Seines Lebens heller Schein

leucht uns im Evangelio,

und machet unsre Seelen froh.

5 Der Sohn des Vaters, Gott von Art,

der für uns getötet ward,

lebt nun, und lebt für mich und dich,
